Frequently Asked Questions
Why is organic food important?
For our health, organic produce is crucial. It is the best way for us to eat healthy food. It's better for us and more sustainable because it doesn’t depend on pesticides or fertilizers.
Organic farming relies on natural methods to cultivate crops, without the use of harmful chemicals. This makes organic farming safer for both humans and animals. So when you choose organic food, you're helping to protect yourself and the planet.
But organic food offers more than just health benefits. We all know the negative effects that processed foods can have on our health. Organic fruits and vegetables aren’t subject to chemicals spray. That means that they taste fresher, look brighter and last longer too.
Because of this, organic foods are so important. Because organic is healthier for you as well as for the world.
What are the most loved organic products?
Today organic food is the fastest-growing sector. We've come far from our roots but there is still room for improvement.
Organic products will be the future. Organic products are safer and better for the environment. They also make it more affordable for consumers.
But they also tend to be higher priced. This is why we created the Organic Food Index. We wanted the ability to identify which foods are currently most popular and whether these trends have changed.
The results showed that organic food is increasing in popularity. Between 2011-2012, nearly half of Americans shopped for organic foods.
According to USDA, organic food production increased by 10% only last year. The U.S. now produces 9% of its agricultural output from organic food.
Although organic food is gaining popularity, it appears that consumers still have to pay a premium for it. The average retail price for organic food is almost twice that of conventional foods, according to the Organic Trade Association (OTA).
However, organic food is growing more quickly than any other part of the food market. If you examine the data closely, you will see that organic foods have grown steadily in consumption since 2009.
According to OTA the volume of organic products sold at supermarkets grew by 14% in 2010 and 2011.
This is because consumers are looking for healthier foods. Organic food sales have been increasing in all age groups.
Younger generations are choosing organic food more often than older generations. Millennials are twice as likely than baby boomers to buy organic foods. 25 percent of organic food purchases are made by young adults younger than 35.
What are the top organic vegetables?
Organic vegetables are the most nutritious and healthy food source for humans. They are the healthiest of all foods.
Organic produce is produced without pesticides or herbicides. These chemicals pose grave risks for our health and the environment.
Organic produce contains more nutrients, vitamins and minerals. Organic produce is more nutritious and healthier.
Not only do organic vegetables taste delicious, but they are also safe to eat. Organic produce is free from known side effects.
All grocery stores can carry organic produce. They can be labeled organic if they are grown according to USDA guidelines.
How can you tell if your produce is organic?
These three labels are essential if you want to be certain that you are purchasing organic produce.
USDA Organic Certified: Produces certified by USDA as 100% organic.
Certified Naturally Grown - Produce that has passed strict requirements for organic practices but has not yet received certification from the USDA.
Pastured/Free range - These are animals that live outside and graze freely on grasses and herbs.
These labels indicate that the product meets certain criteria.
- No pesticides nor synthetic fertilizers
- No genetically altered organisms
- Animals are never given antibiotics
- The animal is never given any hormones
- There are no growth-promoting drugs
- No feed additives
- No artificial ingredients
- No irradiation
- No sewage solids
- No GMOs
- No antibiotics ever given
- No hormones ever given
- No growth-promoting drugs
- No feed-additives
- No artificial ingredients

- No irradiation

How can you tell organic food from non-organic?
Any chef will tell you fresh ingredients are more important than any other ingredient. This is because eating well makes us feel better.
This is true for food as well. We can identify exactly where and how organic foods were grown when we purchase them. We also know it was not treated using harmful chemicals.
Organic food does not contain synthetic pesticides, fertilers, hormones or antibiotics. These substances are forbidden for organic farmers.
There is no art in growing organic crops. There are many safe ways to grow them.
Sometimes, organic farming is called sustainable agriculture. Organic farming is more sustainable than traditional methods and provides all the nutrients necessary to sustain life.
Organic farming practices include crop rotations and cover crops, manure composting, intercropping, and cover cropping. These techniques prevent soil erosion while improving water quality.
They reduce the amount of chemical runoff that can enter waterways. Many of us live in urban areas so we have access to local farms that produce organic produce.
There are two types for organic products certification. One is certified through the USDA National Organic Program and the other by independent certifying agents. Both require strict organic standards to be adhered to.
USDA seals and O Seals may be used to identify organic products that meet federal standards.
What are organic products good for skin?
Organic skincare products don't contain any synthetic chemicals such as parabens or phthalates.
Organic skincare products are free from artificial colours, fragrances and preservatives.
They are also formulated to help maintain healthy skin, prevent premature aging, promote healing after injury, and support overall well-being.
Some standard terms you may see when shopping for organic products:
- Paraben Free is a grouping of chemicals that are used to maintain certain cosmetic products safe, but can be toxic when consumed in large quantities.
- Fragrance Free - The product is not scented with essential oils.
- Cruelty-Free - No animals were harmed during the manufacturing process.
- Natural Ingredients - the ingredient is naturally derived from the plant or animal.
- Vegan/Vegetarian: The ingredients can be either vegetarian or vegan.
- Gluten-Free means that the formulation was free of gluten.
- Non-Toxic -- The product doesn’t contain toxic substances, carcinogens, harmful compounds, or any other dangerous chemicals that could pose a threat to your health.
- Biodegradable - the product will break down into harmless components when discarded.
- Pesticide Free – There were no pesticides used during the harvesting or growing process.
- GMO-Free - this means that none of the ingredients in the product contains genetically modified organisms.
- Certified Organic is a certification that the ingredients of the recipe were grown using sustainable methods.
What's the difference?
Organic food does not contain pesticides, chemical fertilisers, sewage waste, irradiation, genetic modification. Organic farming practices support soil health, water quality, and animal welfare.
Inorganic food is grown with pesticides and chemical fertilizers. Radiated foods can be treated with radiation. Genetically modified organisms (GMOs) are created by biological engineering techniques.
"Organic" and "natural" are often interchangeable. But natural does not necessarily imply organic. Some products labeled "natural" may also contain synthetic ingredients.
Organic produce is often more nutritious than conventional produce, as the soil has fewer pesticides and harmful chemicals. Organic farmers are free from artificial fertilizers and pesticides.

How To
What happens when you switch from conventional products to organic?
Organic products are grown without pesticides, synthetic fertilizers, hormones, antibiotics, or genetic manipulation. They come from clean water sources, and are raised on free-range animals. The term "organic" means they do not contain any chemicals or additives. This product was naturally produced and contains no harmful chemicals.
The term "natural" refers to how food is grown. It's usually used to describe foods not processed into their final form (such as fruits). Natural foods are usually fresher than processed foods, as they haven’t been exposed to heat, radiation, chemical preservatives, or other treatments. But, not everyone believes that natural foods are healthy. Experts agree that organic and conventional foods are very similar. Both types of food are tested for safety, quality, and purity. Organic produce contains fewer pesticide and other pollutants than conventionally-grown produce.
Most grocery stores offer organic options. You can find organic meat, poultry, eggs, and seafood at your local market. Some companies sell only organic products; others have separate sections for them. USDA Certified Organic is a non-GMO Project Verified company.
These items should be avoided if you're pregnant or breastfeeding. Unborn babies and infants can be exposed to pesticides.
