According to OTA however, the volume in supermarkets of organic products grew by 14% from 2010 to 2011.

This increase reflects consumer demand for healthier foods, which explains why organic food sales are increasing across all age groups.

However, the younger generation is leading the charge in choosing organic food. Millennials are twice more likely to purchase organic food than baby boomers. And young adults under 35 years old account for 25% of all organic food purchases.


What should I look out for when buying organic products?

USDA-certified organic labels are recommended. This guarantees that the product meets certain USDA standards. Look for the "USDA Organic" seal on packages, boxes, cartons, cans, and jars.

When purchasing meat, ensure it is 100% organic. Cattle are ruminants. They eat the whole animal. Ruminant cattle have four stomach compartments: rumen, reticulum, omasum, and abomasum. All parts of an animal must be organically fed if the cow is going to be labelled '100% organic.'

Make sure you only buy chicken from chicken farms that are fed organically and have never been given antibiotics. Chickens can eat both animal and plant food. Omnivorous chickens have a digestive system that includes a crop (proventriculus), gizzard and small intestine.

It is important to ensure that dairy products are from cows that were fed 100% organic feed. Just like ruminants, dairy cows also have four stomachs. The fourth stomach compartment--the cow's udder--is where milk is produced.

If you are buying other types of livestock, make sure to check the label to determine the percentage of their diet. For example, pork may be marked "95% organic" to indicate that 95 percent of the pork's feed is organic.
