Here's where the magic happens. You can transform your favourite spices into an easy-to-use powdered form with ingenuity. These spices can be mixed into favorite beverages to create tasty spiced drinks.

These powders can be made in two ways. One method involves grinding whole spices to a fine powder. One method involves using a mortar-and-pestle to grind spices into a finer consistency.

Whatever method you choose to use, you will find that powders are much easier than whole spices. Powder keeps well, so you will never run out.

Mixing different spices can create new flavors. For minty water you could mix spearmint with peppermint leaves. For spicy ginger tea, use ginger and cardamom capsules.

I'll show you how to store spices properly for best results. First, it is important to understand the science behind how foodstuffs are stored.

Because spices lose their flavour when exposed to the sun, they are best kept out of reach from light. This is due oxygen reacting with organic compounds such that spices, causing oxidation.

Spices should be kept in the dark cupboards and sealed tightly in airtight containers to prevent oxidation. Spices lose their flavor quickly if these conditions don't exist.

Keep spices fresh by storing them in airtight jars out of direct sunlight.

To create a flavorful drink, you can add spices and herbs to water. For example, you could mix 2 tablespoons of ground cinnamon in 1/2 cup of warm milk and stir it well. Add a squeezed lemon juice and serve immediately.

Dry herbs and spices can also be used in soups, stews or casseroles. Simply sprinkle the spice mixture evenly over the dish and sit for 5-10 minutes before serving.

As snacks, leftover cooked vegetables and fruits can be added into your favourite recipes.
