When buying chicken, make sure it comes only from chickens fed 100% organic feed and never given antibiotics. Chickens are omnivores, meaning they eat both plants and animals. Omnivorous chickens have a digestive tract composed of a crop, proventriculus, gizzard, small intestine, large intestine, and anus.
When buying dairy products, ensure they come from cows fed 100% organically grown feed. Like ruminants, dairy cattle have four stomachs. The fourth stomach compartment is the udder.
Check the label when purchasing livestock of any other type to find out what percentage was used in the animal's diet. Pork may be labeled "95% Organic" which means that 95 percent of its feed was organic.
How can you tell if your produce is organic?
These three labels can help you make sure you're buying organic produce.
USDA Organic Certified- This product has been certified organic by the USDA.
Certified Naturally Grown is produce that has met strict organic requirements but not yet been certified by the USDA.
Pastured/Free range - These are animals that live outside and graze freely on grasses and herbs.
These labels are used to indicate that the product meets specified criteria.

Inorganic food includes meat, fish, eggs, milk, cheese, butter, yogurt, honey, grains, vegetables, fruits, spices, and herbs.
Organic refers specifically to the method an agricultural product has been grown. Organic farming is based on natural methods, soil amendments, and crop growth. Conventional farming uses pesticides, fertilizers, and chemicals.
The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) must set strict guidelines for organic foods. The National Organic Program Standards state that organic food must be freed from banned substances like antibiotics, growthhormones, genetically altered organisms (GMOs) and industrial solvents. Organic food must not be produced with toxic chemicals, petroleum or sewage sludges or ionizing radioactive substances.
Organic foods are better for us.
According to the Environmental Working Group's latest report on pesticide residues in foods, organic fruits and vegetables had nearly half the level of pesticides compared with non-organic versions. The Environmental Working Group found that organic apples contained eight-times less pesticides than other non-organic fruits, and organic strawberries had fourfold more than their conventional counterparts.
Another study suggests that organic food can reduce exposure to toxic metals such as lead and mercury. One study found that organic meats had 33 percent less lead in children than the levels of those who did not eat them. Another study concluded that pregnant mothers should avoid eating conventional fish because of the high levels mercury.
Organic food tends to be healthier than nonorganic. Experts recommend that you choose fresh fruits and vegetables whenever possible to lower your chance of developing cancer or other diseases.
What are the top organic products?
Today, organic foods are the fastest-growing industries. Even though we have come a long ways from our roots there is still plenty of room for growth.
Organic products are the future. They are safer and more cost-effective for consumers.
However, they are also more expensive. That's why we created the Organic Food Index. We wanted to determine which foods are the most popular among shoppers today and whether these trends are changing.
The results show that organic food is becoming increasingly popular. Between 2011 and 2012, the number of Americans who shop for organic food increased by almost 50%.
The USDA reports that organic production increased 10% last year. 9% now comes from organic foods in the United States.
Organic food is certainly on the rise but consumers are still not able to afford it. According to the Organic Trade Association, (OTA), organic food retail prices are nearly twice as expensive than conventional options.
However, organic food is growing more quickly than any other part of the food market. Looking closely at the data, you'll see that organic food consumption has grown steadily since 2009.
According to OTA the volume of organic products sold at supermarkets grew by 14% in 2010 and 2011.
This is because of consumer demand for healthier products, which explains the rise in organic food sales across all age categories.
However, the younger generation is leading the charge in choosing organic food. Millennials have twice the likelihood of buying organic food as baby boomers. 25 percent of organic food purchases are made by young adults younger than 35.

How To
Organic foods are healthier and more nutritious.
Organic foods are produced without the use of chemical pesticides and synthetic fertilizers. They are grown in natural environments without artificial inputs (fungicides/herbicides/hormones, antibiotics or genetic engineering). Cover crops, crop rotation, crop rotation, composting animal manure as well as recycling wastewater are all organic farming practices.
In 2002, USDA National Organic Programs (NOP) were established to regulate the production and handling of organic products that are sold in the United States. NOP regulations ensure organic agricultural products conform to the Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act. Furthermore, the NOP rules require organic products to be free of banned substances such as pesticides residues and growth hormones.
The United States offers two certification programs for producers that want their products to be certified organic: one for farmers, ranchers and the other for manufacturers. Both programs require audits of operations each year to ensure that they are meeting strict standards. This service is offered by several certifying agents, such as the CCOF Certified Organic Farmers & Ranchers or Quality Assurance International. These organizations offer third-party verification that farms adhere to strict guidelines about environmental stewardship and labour practices.
According to USDA's Economic Research Service in 2013, organic agriculture generated $4.7 billion in revenue. Retail spending on certified organic products reached nearly $1.5 Billion in 2013. This is a 23 per cent increase from 2009. Sales at grocery stores were up 12 percent during this period. Spending on organic produce directly increased by 29.9%, while meat, poultry eggs, and seafood spending grew only by 1%.
While organic food costs more, consumers say its quality justifies the added expense. Consumer Reports conducted a survey in 2015 and found that 88 percent of respondents would pay more for organic foods if they had higher nutritional value. A Health Affairs study also found that organic food consumers are less likely to develop health problems such as diabetes, cancer, obesity, heart disease, depression, and other diseases.
Although organic foods are not proven to prevent or treat certain diseases, some research suggests that they could improve overall health and reduce exposure to pesticides. For example, a review of 31 studies published in 2010 concluded that organically raised beef had significantly lower levels of toxic chemicals and parasites than conventionally raised beef. Similar conclusions were reached in a separate analysis of 11 other studies published in 2012.
According to a 2014 report by the Environmental Working Group, the incidence of foodborne disease caused by E.coli, salmonella or listeria monocytogenes, E. coli and E. coli O157H7 was lower when organic chicken, non-organic pork, beef, lamb and milk were compared. The group also observed that E.coliO157 is a less prevalent cause of illness in humans among children than adults. This was because the USDA has imposed stricter organic standards on animals raised for human consumption.
