Gingerbread's history spans many centuries, and it involves more than one country or continent. Continue reading to find out more about the history of gingerbread.
Did you know that the second Saturday of December is National Gingerbread Decorating Day? You've come to the right place if you've always wondered about the history of gingerbread, why it's associated with Christmas, or the significance of gingerbread houses. We'll explore the history of this delicious treat.
Uncovering Gingerbread's Roots
The word "gingerbread", which is derived from the Old French "gingembras", refers to ginger that has been preserved.
Before we can discuss gingerbread, let's first learn about the history of the spice ginger. Ginger's origins are traceable to Maritime Southeast Asia. It was one of the first spices exported out of Asia via the ancient spice trade. Ginger has become known for its medicinal properties and attributes over time. Even today, ginger is used to treat certain illnesses, like nausea, by drinking ginger ale.
The modern gingerbread we know today is not the original version of gingerbread that was introduced in 992 CE. Gregory of Nicopolis, an Armenian monk, was the one who introduced this gingerbread form to Europe.
Since that time, gingerbread has been adapted and now comes in a variety of varieties, from soft ginger biscuits to moist ginger cake.
Original Gingerbread Man
In the 16th century Queen Elizabeth I (who ruled between 1533 and 1603) gave gingerbread men to her guests, suitors and visiting dignitaries as a gift.
While the Queen didn't invent gingerbread cookies, her idea of making gingerbread men was novel and groundbreaking.
Queen Elizabeth I ordered the gingerbread to be cut into gingerbread men, and then decorated so that they looked like her guests. They were very impressed by the novelty of these gingerbread men being made in their likeness!
The gingerbread man cookie became popular in England after the Queen created her own version. Gingerbread men were made and decorated by women to represent husbands that they wanted to marry.
It was believed that, despite being superstitious and a bit of a myth, if a woman unmarried ate one of these gingerbread men, she would find mate.
Original Gingerbread House
In Germany, the first gingerbread house was invented in the 16th Century. The gingerbread houses were decorated with gold leaf and decorative foil.
In 1812, the publication of Grimm's "Hansel and Gretel", a fairy tale based on the Germanic folktale, played a major role in bringing gingerbread houses to the forefront of popular culture. Two lost children find a candy-made house.
Gingerbread houses can be decorated in a variety of ways, including with sweets, candy, and even gold foil. Royal icing, a special type of icing, is used to hold the different parts together.
Germany - The World's Gingerbread Capital
Germany is not only the birthplace of gingerbread but it also hosts a large community of gingerbread lovers. During Christmas, there are lively street markets all over the country. Nuremberg has been the gingerbread capital since 1600.
In Germany, gingerbread is available in two varieties - one that's soft and another that's harder. The harder version is usually shaped into a heart and decorated with romantic messages. These are often sold at street markets in German towns around Christmas and are a popular symbol of love that can be given to a partner.
Nuremberg Lebkuchen
Nuremberg lebkuchen, also known as "Nuremberg Lebkuchen", was granted protected geographical designation by the European Union in July 1996. In order to be called "Nuremberg Lebkuchen", the product must come from the Nuremberg area and meet certain quality requirements.
This concept is similar to Champagne sparkling wine. Champagne sparkling wine is only allowed to be labelled as Champagne if it originates from the Champagne region of France.
Gingerbread became associated with Christmas
In the 17th century gingerbread was often shaped to look like religious figures. This made it a sacred tradition.
In the past, baking gingerbread was only allowed by specially trained bakers that were members of guilds throughout the year. The guild rule is relaxed only during Christmas and Easter, when anyone can bake gingerbread. During the festive seasons, however, only guild members could bake gingerbread.
Gingerbread is not a sacred or religious practice anymore. Anyone can bake it at any time. Gingerbread can be baked all year round, but it is still primarily associated with Christmas.
Gingerbread is used to make gingerbread houses and cookies. It can also be used as garlands on Christmas trees. Families often get together to bake gingerbread during the holidays. Also, shops that specialize in Christmas items offer gingerbread cookies which can be shared and gifted to loved ones.

Make Your Own Gingerbread Cookie
Making these gingerbread cookies is as easy as they are delicious. This recipe is easy to follow and resembles making snickerdoodles. The dough doesn't need to be chilled, so you can bake and prepare these cookies quickly! If you're short on time but still want to make a delicious cookie for your Christmas party or cookie swap, then these gingerbread cookies will be a great choice.
Gingerbread Cookie Recipe:
Preparation Time: 15 Minutes
Cook Time: 20 minutes
Servings: 12 cookies
Ingredients:
- Softened 3/4 cup of unsalted butter
- 1 cup raw sugar granulated
- 1 large egg
- 1/4 cup of molasses
- 2 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
- 2 tsp baking soda
- 1/2 teaspoon of salt
- 1 tsp cinnamon
- 1/2 tsp ground ginger
- Optional - Roll cookie dough in raw granulated Sugar
Instructions:
- Pre-heat the oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit.
- Mix butter and sugar with an electric mixer until they are light and fluffy (approximately 2-3 minutes).
- Add the egg and molasses, and stir well.
- Combine flour, baking powder, salt, ginger, cinnamon and cloves in a separate bowl. Stir to combine.
- Combine dry ingredients with wet ingredients.
- Scoop or form dough balls that are a little smaller than golf balls. After forming the dough balls, you can roll them in sugar granules if desired. Place the cookies on a baking tray about 2" to 3" apart so that they can spread.
- Bake for 10-12 mins, remove from the oven and let cookies cool for about ten minutes on baking, then transfer them to a rack to finish cooling.
Chef's Notes:
- If you want a stronger cinnamon flavor in the gingerbread dough, add 2 teaspoons instead of 1 teaspoon. If you want a stronger ginger flavor than the original recipe, use 1 to 2 teaspoons of it instead of 1/2 tsp.
- You can substitute molasses for honey, maple syrup or dark corn syrup.
Gingerbread Pie Crust:
Preparation Time: 20 Minutes
Total time: 20 Minutes
Serves: 10

What is Thai spice used for?
The term Thai spice is a common phrase that we've heard a lot, but don't really know what it means. It makes our mouths water when we try it.
It's more than just a spice. It is an essential ingredient that brings flavor and depth into dishes that might otherwise be boring.
Although there are many recipes that call for Thai spices in large numbers, very few recipes actually use the true thing. So let's help you figure out how to ensure you're adding these delicious flavors to your meals.
Thais have been using spices and herbs to flavor food and drinks since ancient times. Thai comes from the Sanskrit term for "to prepare".
Even today, most Thais prefer to eat spicy foods. This preference can be attributed to Thailand’s hot weather. It is difficult to stay warm when you don't have something to drink. Thais also consume more chili peppers that Americans or Europeans.
It is a great way to learn more about Thai spices. There are many options available, including dried chilies as well as fresh basil leaves and curry paste.
You may also find whole peppercorns.
There are two types of spices in Thai cuisine: dry and wet. Dry spices are generally ground, while wet spices can be crushed or pounded finely.
Dry spices are often added to a dish directly. For example, you can sprinkle ground red pepper onto your chicken soup. Wet spices are commonly mixed with oil or butter to form a paste.
Wet spices are commonly used in marinades and sauces. Wet spices are used in many dishes, including fish sauce, oyster, sesame, sesame, sesame oil and curry paste.
You need to be able to match certain spices with Thai ingredients if you wish to make Thai food at home.
For example, red pepper flakes is recommended for beef. If you're using seafood like shrimp, white pepper should be used.
Finally, you can always order online if you don't have access to a good quality Asian market. You can find everything here, from dried chilies to exotic spices and herbs.
This Thai recipe will give you a kick next time your stomach gets rumbling.

How To
How do you store your cooking spices?
Here's how to store your cooking spices for maximum performance. First, it is important to understand the science behind how foodstuffs are stored.
Spices are stored in airtight containers away from the light because exposure to light diminishes their flavour. This is caused by oxidation, which happens when oxygen and organic compounds combine like spices.
To avoid oxidation, spices must be kept in dark cupboards. Spice tends to lose its flavour quickly if these conditions aren't met.
Keep spices fresh by storing them in airtight jars out of direct sunlight.
To create a flavorful drink, you can add spices and herbs to water. For example, you could mix 2 tablespoons of ground cinnamon in 1/2 cup of warm milk and stir it well. Add a squeeze of lemon juice and serve immediately.
Add dried herbs and spices to soups. Spread the spice mixture evenly onto the dish. Allow it to sit for between 5-10 minutes before serving.
Leftover cooked vegetables, fruits and meats, as well as leftover cheese, breads, crackers, cookies or cakes can be added to favorite recipes for snacks.
To get the best flavours from fresh herbs and spices, cut them or tear them and add them to hot foods. Also, you can freeze herbs and spice by placing them into ice cube dishes or muffin cups. Transfer frozen items to zip-top or freezer bags.
