The Cumin Story – A Spice for the Ages

Cumin is essential for many traditional dishes, including Tex-Mex and Indian cuisines. Cumin is a key ingredient in the history of Asia. Its origins are in central Asia, southwestern Asia and the Eastern Mediterranean.

Syria found seeds dating back to the second millennium BC and they are believed to be present in New Kingdom Egyptian digs. A cumin container was a common item at ancient Greece's dinner tables. It was similar to black pepper today.

What is Cumin?

Cumin is a native of the Irano-Turanian Region. The shrub can grow from 12 to 20 inches in height. Each fruit contains one seed and is either a lateral fusiform (or ovoid) achene.

People sometimes confuse cumin and caraway. While they both belong to the same parsley family, cumin is hotter and lighter than Caraway seeds.

Cumin is sometimes referred to in some languages as "Roman caraway" and "Spicecaraway", but there's no clear distinction between these two spices.

Black Cumin

Black cumin is derived from seeds of distant relatives, Bunium persicum, Bunium bulbsocastanum and the unrelated Nigella Sativa.

These tiny, dark brown seeds, also known as Orkala Jeera and Royal Cumin in India, are complexer and sweeter than regular Cumin. Black cumin has a strong, resinous flavor that is preferred in Northern Indian kormas. It is also used in North African and Middle Eastern dishes.

Using Cumin

Cumin is a strong flavor and can be found in many savory dishes due to its powerful flavor profile. Cumin can be used to season entire recipes. However, it is also a great team player that works well with many spices and other flavors.

Cumin is a key ingredient in Indian curries, chili powder, taco spice, and many other familiar blends. Cumin can be used in many other seasoning recipes.
These are some great ways cumin can spice up your next dish.

  • Soups
  • Bean Dishes
  • Sauerkraut
  • Marinades
  • Root Vegetables
  • Cheese
  • Breads
  • Sauces

Anything you can think of.

Conclusion

The history of this unique spice dates back to ancient times, and it is well-known to all people. Cumin can be found in many cuisines including Indian, Middle Eastern and African cuisines.

The seeds can be used whole or ground, but they will retain more flavor if the seeds are not roasted. Spice Station offers whole cumin seeds in both regular and black cumin varieties to ensure that our customers get the best. Cumin should be ground in small quantities or only for the specific recipe.

How to Cut Shiitake Mushrooms

The shiitakes seem to be doing well. There's nothing wrong about them. They are fine. But how can we make them cut without hurting ourselves? We tried everything. Even scissors. But they keep falling out our hands. What's the matter?

The trick is simple. Place a rubber band on the stem of the mushroom and twist it tight. You won't slip, and you won't be cut.

This may seem too simple. It is. But it's also very useful.

Because the rubber band makes the stem slippery it is easy to pick it up. Plus, it doesn't hurt to hold the stem tightly.

Try it now. You'll be amazed how easy it is to cut mushrooms.
