Frequently Asked Questions
What are the main spices, condiments, seasonings and herbs used in Thai cuisine?
Thai cuisine is a blend of influences from Asia. Its roots are in India and China as well as Southeast Asia.
Freshness is the key ingredient in Thai cuisine. Fresh ingredients have more flavor when they are picked and prepared quickly. This is the reason meat, fish, fruits and vegetables are often eaten raw.
Spices and sauces give dishes depth and color. Fresh basil, cilantro, mint, coriander (cilantro), lemongrass, ginger, turmeric, garlic, chillies, chilli paste, soy sauce, tamarind juice, oyster sauce, palm sugar, coconut milk, lime leaves, galangal root, curry powder, shrimp paste, fish sauce, tamarind water, rice vinegar, etc. They are frequently used.
Which Thai spice do I need to cook Thai food at home?
In order to cook authentic Thai food at home you will need five spices: black pepper (cayenne), coriander seeds (coriander seeds), turmeric and cinnamon. Each ingredient has its own unique flavour profile, and each plays an important role in creating delicious dishes.
Cinnamon adds sweetness, while black pepper brings out savoury flavours. Coriander seeds add a spicy kick, while turmeric gives curry powder its signature yellow colour. Cayenne peppers bring the heat while cilantro adds freshness. Finally, cinnamon adds depth and complexity to any dish.
You can find each of these spices at your local grocery store, but if you'd instead buy them online, here are our recommendations for where to shop.
Can you add spice to a beverage?
I love how spices add flavor to food. But how can you make them live when they're used in drinks.
Spices add a wonderful depth to any beverage. You can add a little cinnamon or nutmeg to any glass of wine, beer or coffee.
But most recipes call for ground spices, meaning you'll need fresh whole spices. While this makes sense, it is costly, takes time and requires storage space.
That's where the magic happens. You can transform your favourite spices into an easy-to-use powdered form with ingenuity. To make tasty spiced drinks, you can combine them with your favourite beverages.
Two ways can you make powders. A second method is to grind whole spices into fine powder. Another method is to use a mortar & pestle to grind the spices until they are finely ground.
Whichever method you choose, you'll find that the resulting powder is much easier to measure out and store than whole spices. You won't run short of powder, and it keeps well.
You can experiment with mixing spices to create different flavours. For example, you could combine peppermint and spearmint leaves to make minty water. To make spicy ginger tea, you can also combine ginger and cardamom pods.
Once you are proficient in making powdered spice, you can also apply this technique to herbs. Some popular herbs include basil, oregano, rosemary, thyme, and sage.
The possibilities are endless. Powdered spices can be used to add flavour to beverages or enhance the flavor of dishes like soups, salads and pasta.

How To
How do you make a garlic press?
A garlic press is a valuable tool in every home cook's kitchen. It makes it easy to mince garlic into a paste, puree it into soups or salad dressings, or even make a sauce. You can also crush whole garlic cloves to make buttery spreads or garlic seasonings.
If you don't yet have a garlic presse, you may be wondering where to get one. Luckily, we've got some tips to help you get started.
First, you will need a large bowl. Place the bowl below the press and pour in the crushed garlic. Now, turn the pressure regulator to maximum.
Next, turn your handle clockwise to hear a click. The top end of the press should lift and reveal a flat area that allows you to slide your blade back and forth across the bowl. Continue to turn the handle counterclockwise, until the blades are closed.
Finally, take out the pressed garlic.
Here are other ways you can make use of this versatile tool.
- Use minced garlic in soups, sauces and salads as a seasoning or even as a garnish.
- Use the press to crush whole garlic cloves into a buttery spread
- Crush whole cloves of garlic onto pizza dough before baking
- Make roasted garlic mashed potatoes, or creamy polenta.
- The press can be used to make pesto from garlic
- Puree garlic in a smooth vinaigrette
