But it isn't just any old spice. It's an ingredient that can add flavor and depth in dishes that otherwise would be bland.

Although there are many recipes that call for Thai spices in large numbers, very few recipes actually use the true thing. Let's learn how to include these delicious flavors in your meals.

Thais have used herbs and spices since ancient times to enhance food and drink. Thai comes from the Sanskrit term for "to prepare".

Most Thais like spicy food, even today. This preference can be attributed to Thailand’s hot weather. It is difficult to stay warm when you don't have something to drink. Thais consume more chili peppers than Americans and Europeans.

The best way to learn about Thai spices is to visit a local Asian grocery store. There you will find a variety of ingredients such as dried chilies fresh basil leaves curry paste and ground black pepper.

You might also find whole peppercorns and cloves as well as cinnamon sticks, star anise pods (star anise), cardamom pods ginger root, cumin seeds coriander seeds seeds, fennel seed, nutmeg mace, mustard seeds, saffron threads garlic, onion, rice vinegar, and tamarind juice.

Thai cuisine uses both dry and wet spices. Wet spices are ground finely, while dry spices are typically ground.

Dry spices are added directly to a dish. Ground red pepper can be sprinkled on chicken soup, for example. In order to make a paste out of wet spices, oil or butter is often used.

Wet spices are used in dressings, sauces and marinades. Wet spices are used in many dishes, including fish sauce, oyster, sesame, sesame, sesame oil and curry paste.

Thai cuisine can be made at home by learning which spices work well with specific ingredients.

Red pepper flakes should be used if you're using beef. White pepper is better for seafood such as shrimp.

If you don't live near an Asian market, you can order online. There are many options for exotic herbs, spices and dried chilies.

How to Store Spices

They should be kept out of direct sunlight and heat in an airtight container.

Keep your spices out of direct sunlight and in a cool dry place. A heater or window can cause the spice to lose its aroma and flavour.

Spices need to be kept in an airtight glass container or tin. Avoid storing spices in plastic containers.

Always check the seal after opening and resealing, as humidity can cause spoilage.

Don't toss out any leftover spices. Make sure to use leftover spices in other recipes. For an extended shelf life, you can freeze the vegetables.


What's the difference in cooking with whole vs. ground spices? Ground Spices?

There isn't any difference between cooking with whole spices and ground spices. After harvesting, all spices are ground. So there is no difference in quality.

However, the price differences are significant. Whole spices can be more expensive due to the labor involved in their processing. The flavor is well worth the effort.

Bulk purchases of whole spices can often get you additional discounts. If you buy a whole bag of cinnamon sticks, you may get a discount.

The same goes for nutmeg, cloves, ginger, cardamom, etc. This can help you save money on spices if you buy them in bulk.

Whole spices can also last longer than the ground spices. Ground spices quickly lose their potency due to oxidation.

However, the main reason we recommend whole spices is because they add character to recipes.

You can make delicious curry using whole turmeric, instead of ground turmeric. For chicken dishes, whole coriander seeds can be ground to make a spice blend.

The process of grinding spices takes a lot of time. A large amount of whole spices is a good idea. So that you don’t run out of spices, it’s a smart move.
