It's officially autumn. Fall is here. The temperatures are cooling down, bonfires have been lit, and people like me who love the fall are ready to drink warm Apple Cider. Apple cider is everywhere at this time of the year. Apple cider was popular long before pumpkin spice lattes were introduced.
Where did this fall beverage get its start? History plays a role. We will cover everything you need to know about apple cider, my favorite drink for the fall. At the end, I will include a recipe on how to make the best apple juice in your own kitchen.
Apple Cider's History
Apple cider's fascinating history spans thousands years. It has evolved from a spirituous beverage to the versatile beverage that we enjoy today. Apples were too bitter to eat in the early days. So people began squeezing their juice and letting it ferment. The National Apple Museum acknowledges that this fermentation transformed the sweet apple juice into hard cider.
Apple cider's roots can be traced back to 1300 B.C., when apple trees were found growing on the banks of the Nile River. Although there's no direct evidence that ancient Egyptians made apple cider, it is known that they were pioneers when it came to fermenting alcohol drinks, especially beer. This shows they understood the magic of fermenting.
Apple cider became popular in areas where apples were abundant. The Romans adopted the drink quickly after they arrived in the British Isles, 55 B.C. Locals had been drinking a similar brew made from apples. Cider was soon a favorite drink in Europe and the Roman Empire. It was enjoyed by everyone from Germanic tribes all the way to the Normans who brought the word "cider" into English during the conquest of England.
The love affair with apple cider extended to the Americas when the first European settlers arrived. Apples thrived in colonial New England where it was difficult to grow grains and barley, so they became the main ingredient for cider. The colonial apple cider wasn't just a sugary juice. It was a powerful alternative to water during the harsh winters and provided vital sustenance. The milder "applekin ." version was available for children.
It is interesting to note that Johnny Appleseed's apple tree planting in the United States was originally intended for cider production and not pie baking. Apple cider's long history is testament to its adaptability, enduring appeal and ability to transcend time and borders. It has become a favorite beverage with or without alcohol.
Cider Industry Effects of Beer and Prohibition
Cider's popularity has declined over the years. Immigrants brought their beer-loving ways to the Midwest where hops and grains were easier to cultivate than apples on the Atlantic coast. The real blow came with Prohibition. It wiped out American Cideries for many decades.
Apple cider has made a comeback, but it is still true to its origins. It can be found in bars across the country. The drink has proven to be a real fighter, rebounding from some difficult times. Its journey throughout history shows us how it has a charm and resilience that lasts.
Make Your Own Apple Cider
Homemade apple cider is a classic when it comes to enjoying the comforting and warm flavors of autumn. It's my favorite fall beverage. If you've never tried making apple cider yourself, this is the time to do it. This is a simple and easy way to use those leftover apples after you've made your apple pies.
This easy homemade recipe is full of cozy spices, and has just the right amount of sweetness. It's a great beverage to serve when entertaining guests. Continue reading to learn how to make the perfect cup of this comforting, timeless drink.
Choose the Best Apples to Make Apple Cider: You can use any apple you like. Whatever apple variety you have on hand will make delicious cider. Apples with a stronger flavor, such as Granny Smith or Honeycrisp will give your cider a more intense taste.
Peeling or not to Peel? You don't need to peel the apples. The flavor of the cider is enhanced by leaving the skins on. Apple skins are full of delicious apple flavor. You'll strain the mixture through a fine-mesh strainer to remove all the spices and solids. Keep a ladle handy, as you will have a large amount of liquid.
To avoid boiling over, use the largest pot that you can or divide ingredients into two pots.
Smashing apples is the secret to making the best apple juice. This step may sound strange, but it will extract as much apple flavor as possible into your cider. You will strain the finished product to remove any apple pieces before drinking it. Use a potato masher, or a large wooden teaspoon to smash the cooked apples into the liquid. Continue to simmer the liquid for another hour. Strain the liquid before serving.
After you master this recipe, use it as a base to create your own personalized apple cider. You can adjust the spices to suit your tastes, or add bourbon to make a more spirited apple juice (the options for apple cider cocktails is endless). Or you can freeze it to create a refreshing apple slushie. Are you planning to serve a large group? This cider can be easily scaled up or down depending on the size of the gathering.
Let's toast to homemade apple cider!

How to Make a Garlic Press
A garlic presse is an indispensable tool for home chefs. You can quickly mince garlic or make a paste. It is great for crushing whole garlic cloves in a buttery spread, or garlic salt.
If you don't yet have a garlic presse, you may be wondering where to get one. Here are some tips that will help you get started.
First things first: you'll need a large bowl. Place the bowl underneath the press and pour the crushed garlic into it. Now, set the pressure regulator valve to the maximum.
Next, turn the handle clockwise until you hear a click. The top portion of the press should come off, revealing a flat surface. You can slide the blade across the bowl. Keep turning the handle clockwise until you reach the end of the blades.
Finally, take out the pressed ginger and enjoy!
