The classic Rusty Nail Cocktail is an elegant and timeless concoction made with Scotch Whisky and Drambuie. This cocktail has been popular since Prohibition.
The Rusty Nail is the perfect cocktail for those who are tired of the Espresso Martinis and the beautiful Aviation Cocktails.
The name of this cocktail has a fascinating story. As with many classic cocktails, its origins are a little murky. However, a popular legend relates it to the British Royal Navy. The sailors would mix Drambuie, a honey-infused Scottish liqueur with herbs and sugars, with their daily dose of Scotch Whisky. The sailors called it Rusty Nail because they stirred their drinks using a rusty nails. Don't worry - no actual rusty nail is used to make this cocktail today.
Let me take you back in time. The Rusty Nail was my first discovery at this retro-chic, adorable cocktail bar when I visited San Francisco with some college friends. After spending a lot of money in Union Square, we were looking for the perfect cocktail to wind down. We had no idea that we were about meet the Rusty Nail. The Rusty Nail is now a staple at all the parties I host. Give the Rusty Nail cocktail a go, you won't regret it. It might even be the star of your next party!
Ingredients
Scotches come in a variety of flavors. It's all about your taste. For more information, please visit the FAQ section. )
- 1 1/2 oz. Scotch Whisky
- 3/4 oz. Drambuie liqueur
- Ice cubes
- Lemon twist or Orange twist (for garnish).
Utensils Required
- A cocktail shaker or mixing glass to chill and mix ingredients
- A strainer to remove any bits of glass
- A barspoon for stirring the mixture
- Rock glass to serve the cocktail
- A measuring tool or jigger to measure Scotch and Drambuie
Instrucciones
Add
Fill a cocktail shaker or mixing glass with ice. Add the Drambuie and Scotch to the glass.
Stir
Stir gently for 20-30 seconds to combine ingredients and chill.
Strain
Strain the cocktail in a rocks glass with fresh ice.
Garnish
You can garnish your Rusty Nail cocktail with a twist of orange or lemon peel: Simply twist the strip over the glass, releasing the oils. Then, drop the twist into the cocktail.
Tip and Tricks
Good Ingredients Can Make A Difference I would recommend using good Scotch whisky. You will definitely notice the difference.
Dilution is Important: Stir your mixture for 20-30 seconds. You want the mixture to be cool and perfect, not watered-down.
Changing the ratio to suit your tastes: The Rusty Nail is usually made with two parts Scotch and one part Drambuie. Nobody said you couldn't experiment. For a Scotch drink, you can use a 3:1 or 4:1 ratio. If you prefer a sweeter beverage, an equal mix could be the answer!
Garnishing With Flair: Spray the citrus oils over the cocktail prior to adding it. For an added citrus kick, I like to dip the glass rim into your garnishing peels.
How to serve the Rusty Nail I enjoy chilling my rocks glass prior to serving. This keeps my Rusty Nail cold and also shows that I'm not just playing around with a killer cocktail.
Variations
Low Carb Rusty Nail : Replace that Drambuie syrup with homemade honey and herbs. Mix water with a sugar alternative like erythritol, stevia or erythritol, along with your favorite herbs. Thyme or rosemary are my favorites! ).
Bourbon Nails : Swap Scotch with Bourbon and you have a classic American twist on the Rusty Nail. While you're at it, make these Pumpkin Sugar cookies with Bourbon Cinnamon Frosting.
Smoky Nail : Looking for something with a little kick? Pour your Rusty Nail, use a peaty Islay scotch. This will increase the smoke in your drink.
Rusty Honey If you love the sweet life, try adding a little honey liqueur like Barenjager to your Rusty Nail mixture.
Spicy Nail: Want some pizzazz? Drambuie is sweetened with a few drops of chili or chipotle bitters. This is a Scottish version of the spicy Margarita I make!
FAQ
This drink's history is somewhat hazy. Rusty Nail was popular in the Prohibition period, but it wasn't until the swingin’ '60s that the name became widely known. It was a "superstar" when it became the drink-of-choice at New York City’s famous 21 Club.
Rusty Nail is a standard product that has 160-190 calories. However, this will vary depending on brands, serving sizes, and ratios.
A smooth and smoky Scotch is a great choice. If you prefer a smoky taste, Islay single-malt Scotch will do. For a lighter taste try a Speyside blend or Highland blend.
It's fun to try bourbon, or Irish whiskey. But it will give your cocktail an entirely different flavor than the classic Rusty Nail.
Rusty Nail is best enjoyed slowly. You can pair the sweet Drambuie and smoky Scotch flavors with a chocolatey dessert or a nutty one if you are a dessert girl.
How To Make A Rusty Nail Before Time
For Rusty Nails, you can make it ahead of time. Just multiply the ingredients, mix your Scotch with Drambuie and store in an airtight bottle or jar until your guests arrive. Store it somewhere cool, away from the sun to preserve its intense flavors.
Pour your mix into a glass filled with ice, stir it, then pour the mixture into a glass that has been chilled. Don't forget to add the orange or lemon twist as a garnish!

Frequently Asked Questions
How do I make Thai food at home using Thai spices?
To make authentic Thai food at home, you'll need to master five essential spices: black pepper, cayenne, coriander seeds, turmeric, and cinnamon. Each ingredient has a unique flavor profile and plays an essential role in creating delicious dishes.
Black pepper enhances the savoury flavors of curry powder, while cinnamon gives it sweetness. Coriander seeds give curry powder its distinctive yellow colour, while turmeric adds a spicy kick. Cayenne peppers are hot, and cilantro adds freshness. The final touch is cinnamon which gives depth and complexity to any dish.
Each of these spices is available in your local grocery. If you'd rather buy them online, the following are our recommendations.
What is the use of garlic in Thai cooking?
Thai cuisine often uses garlic. Garlic is commonly added to salads.
Thai garlic is chopped and fried together with ginger, shallots and other spices. Additionally, garlic is often eaten with sticky Rice.
Chilli paste, salt and lime juice are the most popular ways to eat garlic. This mixture is called Nam Phrik (namphrik). Nam phrik can be served with grilled chicken and beef.
Thai food uses paprika?
Yes. Yes.
Thai, Mexican, Spanish, Indian and Chinese cuisines include paprika.
Paprika can been traced back to Ancient Greece over 5,000 years ago. The Hungarian language means "pepper" and the word "paprika".
What is the difference in curry and curried?
It doesn't matter how the spelling is written. Both words are used to describe the same thing: Indian dishes that combine meat or vegetables with various seasonings.
Curry comes from Hindi word kari that means "to rub". It refers how spice mixtures are applied to food. Curried foods should be cooked until they are golden brown.
While curried dishes were once reserved only for special occasions they are now enjoyed regularly throughout India. They can include chicken, beef, lamb, fish, vegetables, and rice.
Plain white rice is commonly served with curried meals. Other common accompaniments include raita (a yogurt sauce) and chutney (a sweet relish).
How to Store Spices
Keep them in an airtight, dry container away from heat or light.
Place them in a dark cupboard to store spices for extended periods. This will preserve them and prevent any oxidation.
Your spices should be kept in cool and dry areas, away from direct sunlight. It is possible for the spice to lose its flavor and aroma if it's placed in close proximity to a window or heater.
Spices should be stored in an airtight tin or glass jar. Avoid storing spices in plastic containers.
Check the seal every time you open and reseal it. Heat can cause moisture to spoil your product.
Don't throw out any spice leftovers. Instead, use them up by adding them to other dishes. To prolong their shelf life you can freeze them.
What mint is used for Thai food?
Thai cuisine has the most widespread use of lime-leaf mint (Mentha certvina).
It adds freshness to dishes with its mild, lemony flavor. Thai dishes often include other spices such as galangal (lemongrass), garlic, and coriander.
Mint is a versatile herb that can be used in both sweet as well as savoury meals. You can create authentic Thai flavours by choosing the right herbs, spices, and aromatics.
For extra flavor, make sure to add lime-leaf mint next time you prepare a Thai meal!
Happy cooking!

How To
How to store spices for cooking?
Here's how to store your cooking spices for maximum performance. First, it is important to understand the science behind how foodstuffs are stored.
Because spices lose their flavour when exposed to the sun, they are best kept out of reach from light. This is because oxygen reacts with organic compounds like those in spices to cause oxidation.
To avoid oxidation, spice should be kept in dark cupboards. Spices will lose their flavour quickly if the conditions aren’t met.
The best way to preserve the flavour of spices is to keep them in airtight jars away from direct sunlight.
To make flavoured drinks, you can add herbs or spices to water. For example, you could mix 2 tablespoons of ground cinnamon in 1/2 cup of warm milk and stir it well. Serve immediately by adding a squeeze lemon juice.
You can add dried herbs and spices to soups, stews, casseroles, pasta, rice dishes, salads, and desserts. Sprinkle the spice mixture evenly on the dish, and let it sit for five to ten minutes before you serve.
As snacks, leftover cooked vegetables and fruits can be added into your favourite recipes.
If you want to take advantage of the flavours of fresh herbs and spices, chop or tear them up and add them to foods while they're still hot. You can also freeze spices and herbs by placing them in muffin cups or ice trays and freezing them. Once frozen, transfer to freezer bags or zip-top plastic bags.
