Picture it: You’re sitting in front of a TV. The Big Game is on (which sport isn’t important). To your left and right are your closest buds. Directly ahead of you is a coffee table filled with all your favorite deep-fried goodies (plus the occasional carrot stick because you told your kids you would start to eat healthier. Plus, they came with the wings.) You pick up an onion ring. That’s when it hits you: You don’t have any sauce. You sit back on the couch dejected. Your team may as well lose. The rest of the food may as well be poison. You get up, grab your jacket, and go home.

Yes, onion ring sauce IS that important.

That’s why I’ve developed this recipe. This dipping sauce strikes the perfect balance of taste-bud stimulation. One friend likes it sweet? Covered. Another likes spicy? Check. I’ve packed it all into a creamy sauce like no other.

Is Onion Ring Sauce Healthy?

Well, it’s a sauce meant for deep-fried onion rings so the assumed meal isn’t what you can call “healthy”. As for the actual sauce, it’s relatively healthy. The one standout is the sugar, but even that is organic cane sugar, and what’s more, there’s only half a teaspoon. The sauce is dairy-free, vegan, vegetarian, and gluten-free, and can be paleo friendly if you replace the sugar with honey.

What Else Can I Use This Dipping Sauce for?

Pretty much anything deep-fried, is the short answer. The long answer is french fries (including their slightly healthier cousin, sweet potato fries, and their younger brother, the tater tot), chicken tenders (including their fast-food–famous cousin, the chicken nugget), potato chips (the pret-a-manger aunt), and fish sticks (the forgotten uncle who lives by the sea?). You can also branch out from deep-fried food and slather this sauce on burgers and sandwiches, use it as a dip for chicken wings, and, if you feel so bold (not to mention, healthy), you can serve it as a dip for a veggie platter.

INGREDIENTS

  • ½ cup mayonnaise (preferably made with avocado oil)
  • 2 tbsp organic ketchup
  • ½ tbsp apple cider vinegar
  • 1 tsp Cajun seasoning
  • ½ tsp organic cane sugar

Combine the ingredients in a bowl. Whisk until creamy.

Chill

How do I store the onion ring sauce?

I usually reserve my smaller Tupperware containers for sauces such as this. Then it’s into the fridge it goes, where it should last for up to a couple of weeks. Give it a stir before serving. Freezing the sauce isn’t recommended.

How many calories are in this sauce?

There are 199 calories in a serving of this sauce. (The recipe makes four servings.) I wouldn’t pay too much attention to this number; the important thing is that I have made my own sauce, so it doesn’t have the usual chemicals and additives you’ll no doubt find in the store-bought stuff.

My sauce is too thin/thick for my liking.

If you want to thicken the sauce, let it sit for longer in the fridge; this should firm it up. You can also add a bit more mayo. If it’s too thick, add a bit of water in small increments.

How can I make this hotter?

If it’s a kick you’re after, add a teaspoon of horseradish or a tablespoon of chopped jalapeno.

Can I substitute the mayo with anything?

If you are looking for a healthier version, replace the mayo with plain Greek yogurt. This will obviously affect the taste, giving your dipping sauce a bit more of a tang, so be sure you’re happy with this before making the switch.

Do I have to use ketchup?

No, though you need to use something tomato-based, iike tomato sauce, for example. Just know that the resulting sauce won’t have that tang or sweetness that ketchup brings to the table.
