This foolproof recipe is the best way to get perfectly buttery Microwave Corn on The Cob when it's 156 degrees outside. You don't want to turn on your stove or oven in that heat. #amiright?!?!? Cooking corn on the cob in a microwave gives you kernels that pop with sweet juiciness, and there's no large pot of water to boil, no grill to heat and then scour clean, and no air-conditioning-killing oven to preheat. Let's get started!
Why microwave corn on the cob?
Microwaves create the ideal environment for corn to steam by themselves. This is easy, hands-free cooking at its best. The results are delicious. Because you took a break from the grill, the corn won't be charred or boiled to death. (I love char, don't get me wrong. It's not good when you only taste it.
It doesn't get any easier than this. You'll only need a few ingredients to make perfectly buttery Microwave Corn on the Cob.
- Corn Cobs - best when still in the husk, but frozen corn or shucked corn can also be used in a pinch. You will need to adjust timing by about one minute per cob if you are using frozen corn.
- Salted butter - Corn without butter is a criminal act. Don't @ me.
How long can you microwave corn on the cob?
The microwave wattage will determine how long you should microwave a full-sized, fresh ear of corn (about 8 inches in length). Even if you stack them, the cooking time per ear is still 4 minutes. Four corn cobs will need to cook on high for 16 minutes. If they are frozen, cook them for at least 5 minutes each ear. If the ears are half-cobs, do 3 minutes each.
In an average microwave, 1000 watts is the maximum power. You may need to adjust timing if your microwave is stronger or weaker. You can find the model number on the inside of your door or the manufacturer's site if you do not know the wattage.
What to serve with Corn on the Cobb
Microwave Corn on the Cob pairs perfectly with summer salads such as Panzanella and Summer Vegetable Pasta Salad. It can be served as a complement to BBQ Ribs and Sloppy Joes. Other classics include Cumin-Lime Coleslaw, Baked Beans or Southern Style Potato Salad.
How to Pick Good Corn
Golden brown corn silk tassels should be on a great ear. The tassels should be damp and feel fresh when you touch them. If your corn has dry or black tassels, it is likely to be old. The kernels will be plump if you pull back the husk. The corn cob will be old if the kernels are dry or missing. To prevent the corn from drying out or losing its taste, store uncooked corn in its husk in an open fridge. Cooked cobs can be frozen for up to one year. They should be dried well, wrapped in aluminum foil, then wax paper. Then store them in a container that is airtight.
Microwave Corn on the Cob
Ingredients
- 4 large husks of corn in their original husk* 2.40
- 4 Tbsp salted butter $0.75
Instructions
-
Use the inner rotating plate of your microwave as a guide to cut your cobs. The husks should not be removed. If you have corn cobs that are already trimmed and do not have a husk, simply move on to step 2.
-
Put each cob in running water to soak. Wrap each one in a damp paper towel. Place the corncobs into the microwave on high and cook for 16 minutes, or 4 minutes each. The cooking time will vary depending on your microwave's wattage and the size of each cob.
-
When the color of the kernels has become richer and glossy, you can tell that they are ready. Let the cobs cool down until you are able to hold them without getting burned. Cut off the stem of the cobs and remove the paper towel.
-
Remove the husks from the top to the stem. Remove any cornsilk strands that may have escaped. Serve with 1 tablespoon salted butter on each cob.

How to make microwave corn on the cob - step by step photos
Cut the four cobs according to your microwave. Use the inner rotating plate of your microwave as a guide if you are unsure what size will fit. The husks should not be removed. If you don't see a husk on your corn cobs, then they are probably already cut. Just move to step 2.
Wrap each cob in a damp paper towel. The cobs should be zapped on high power for approximately 4 minutes per cob. You don't have to microwave them one at a time. You can cook 4 corns at once by stacking them on a plate that is microwave safe. Adjust the cooking time to 4 minutes for a fresh cob or 5 minutes for a frozen cob. The cooking time will vary depending on your microwave's power.
When the color of the kernels has become richer and glossy, you can tell that they are ready. Let the cobs cool down until you are able to hold them without getting burned. Cut off the stem of the cobs and remove the paper towel.
Peel off the husk. The husk will easily peel off, removing almost all the silk with it.
That's it! You're finished! Serve them with grilled or roast proteins, summer side dishes, salads or just eat them plain. After testing the recipe, I ate eight cobs and passed out from a corn cob induced afternoon naptime bliss. It's a great recipe!

Frequently Asked Questions
What's the difference?
Organic food is produced without pesticides, chemical fertilizers, sewage sludge, irradiation, or genetic modification. Organic farming practices improve soil health and water quality as well as animal welfare.
Inorganic foods are produced using chemical fertilizers, pesticides, and sewage effluent. Radiation can be used to destroy food, while genetically modified organisms are created by biological engineering.
Sometimes, the term "natural", is used interchangeably with "organic." But natural does not necessarily imply organic. Some products labeled "natural" may also contain synthetic ingredients.
Because organic produce contains fewer harmful chemicals, pesticides, and fertilizers than conventional produce it is more nutritious. Organic farmers do not use pesticides, artificial fertilizers, hormones, anti-biotics, and other harmful chemicals.
Are organic foods better?
The Environmental Working Group's most recent report on pesticide residues found in food shows that organic fruits and veggies had almost half the pesticide content of non-organic. They discovered that organic apples contained eight more pesticides per gram than non-organic ones, while organic strawberries contained four times as many pesticides.
Studies have also shown that organic foods reduce the risk of mercury and lead poisoning. For instance, one study showed that children who consumed organic meat had 33% less blood lead levels than children who did not. A second study found that conventional fish should be avoided by pregnant women due to the high levels of mercury.
Organic food seems to be safer than the non-organic. Experts recommend eating fresh fruits and veggies whenever possible to reduce the chance of developing cancer.
What is organic?
Organic meat means real food, grown without artificial fertilizers or pesticides. It also means the animals were not fed any genetically modified foods. This means that the meat is safe for consumption as there aren’t any harmful chemicals.
Organic meats are healthier for our environment. Organic foods reduce pollution in rivers, lakes and landfills. Organic farmers don't use harmful chemicals to kill birds and insects, which helps wildlife.
Buy organic meats whenever possible. This is the best way for you to eat healthy, organic meats. Local purchasing helps keep money local, not out of the state. Local businesses often pass savings on to customers who shop locally. Shopping locally keeps American jobs in America, rather than sending them abroad.
What are the top organic products?
Today, organic foods are the fastest-growing industries. But even though we've come a long way from our roots, there is still much room for growth.
Organic products are the future. They are safer, healthier for the environment, and easier to afford for consumers.
However, they are also more expensive. We created the Organic Food Index. We wanted to find out which foods are most popular with shoppers today, and whether these trends are changing.
The results show that organic food is becoming increasingly popular. Between 2011 and 2012, the number of Americans who shop for organic food increased by almost 50%.
According to USDA, organic food production increased by 10% only last year. 9% now comes from organic foods in the United States.
While organic food is certainly gaining ground, it seems that it is still an expensive choice for consumers. According to the Organic Trade Association, (OTA), organic food retail prices are nearly twice as expensive than conventional options.
Organic food is growing faster that any other sector of the food industry. Looking closely at the data, you'll see that organic food consumption has grown steadily since 2009.
According to OTA the volume of organic products sold at supermarkets grew by 14% in 2010 and 2011.
This is because consumers are looking for healthier foods. Organic food sales have been increasing in all age groups.
However, younger generations are leading the charge when choosing organic food. Millennials are twice as likely than baby boomers to buy organic foods. 25 percent of organic food purchases are made by young adults younger than 35.
Statistics
- Cosmetic brands such as Laurel and Rose Mira are 100 percent organic and have a wide array of skincare products. (en.wikipedia.org)
- As for organic meat, regulations require that animals be raised in living conditions that accommodate their natural behaviours (like the ability to graze on pasture), fed 100% organic feed and forage, and not administered antibiotics or hormones. (usda.gov)
- Popular clothing brands, like Patagonia, are labelled as organic by using 100 percent organic cotton for many of their styles. (en.wikipedia.org)
- To provide the highest quality products and services to every customer, with a dedicated workforce that puts the customer first and takes the extra step to achieve 100% customer satisfaction and loyalty. (hollinsorganic.com)

How To
What you need to know about organic foods
Organic foods are produced from plants and animals that have been grown without the use of pesticides, chemical fertilizers or other additives. They are made without genetic engineering and the application of ionizing radiance. No artificial colourings, flavour enhancers, preservatives, or colourings must be used in the food. It must not contain genetically modified organisms (GMOs).
In 1845, Justus Von Liebig, an aspiring chemist and entrepreneur, created the term "organic" to describe the properties found in manure. Today, organic is synonymous with food production. Organic simply means the product is made from only naturally occurring substances such proteins, carbohydrate, and minerals.
The consumption of organic foods has risen dramatically in the past decades. According to recent statistics, around 50% of the world's population consumes at least one organic product daily. This number increases constantly and is expected to reach 70%, 80%, and 90% by 2020.
There are many factors that consumers choose organic produce. Some consumers prefer organic products for the taste. Other people prefer them because organic produce is more nutritious. Still others believe organic farming is better for the environment. But, non-organic products can be a good choice because there are ethical concerns over the treatment and welfare of farm workers.
Although organic foods tend to be more expensive than regular ones, prices can vary depending on where they are located. The price of organic food is affected by several factors. One is the availability and cost of land that can be used for organic agriculture. Another is the cost for inputs and labour required to grow organic crops. Transport costs, marketing costs and taxes are also important. The average European price for organic food is 10% lower than the regular price.
Below are the main differences between conventional and organic foods.
- Organic produce is free of chemicals, hormones, antibiotics, synthetic fertilizers, and growth regulators.
- Organic livestock is fed grasses & grains, not corn and soybean meal.
- Organic milk is produced by cows who eat a diet consisting of pasture grasses and hay.
- All raw materials used to make organic products are organically certified.
- Organic fruits and veggies are grown and processed without pesticides and other harmful chemicals.
- Organic meats, poultry, and seafood don't require radiation.
- You should soak raw nuts and seeds before you use them.
- Organic cooking is only allowed to use healthy oils.
- Organic eggs have been laid by hens and given access to outdoor areas.
- Bees use traditional methods to extract organic honey.
- Organic chocolate uses sugar and beans that have been grown and processed organically.
- Organic wines don't contain chemical additives.
- Organic tea leaves come from plants picked by hand.
- Organic cotton is grown without any form of pesticide or herbicide.
- Organic flours, cereals, and breads are free of artificial colours and preservatives.
- All natural shampoos and soaps are free from harsh chemicals.
- All-natural cosmetics are safe for your skin.
- All natural cleaning agents are biodegradable.
- All natural body products are dermatologically tested and hypoallergenic.
- All-natural personal hygiene products are fragrance-free and can be used safely by babies.
- The all-natural baby formula is free of bovine serum and animal rennet.
