Now love yourself and enjoy this one ...
I'm sending this recipe to all my lactose intolerant friends! You must try this recipe if you haven't already. It's way too expensive at the store. It takes only five minutes to make and tastes AMAZING. It was cool, creamy and refreshing. I normally don't like oats milk but this one made me want to drink the whole batch. Promise me that you will bookmark this page, and try it this weekend.
What is in Oat Milk?
You might have a heart attack when I tell you just how easy this oatmilk is. Oat milk is a simple mixture of oats and water. It can also include vanilla, if desired, or a sweetener. That's it. Five simple ingredients! What I used to make homemade oatmilk:
- Oats I tested old-fashioned and quick-rolled oats to create this recipe, and the old-fashioned ones were clearly the winner. When blended, old-fashioned rolled oatmeal breaks down just enough to produce a milk that's not too thick or slimy. The quick oats were so powdery that they disintegrated completely in the water, creating a thick sludge like oatmilk. #nothanks
- Water -- Use cool to make homemade oatmilk to avoid the starches of the oats becoming too hydrated. This will result in thick, slimy oatmilk.
- Sea Salt- A pinch is all you need! Salt allows us to taste vanilla, sweet and creamy in their fullest dimension.
- Vanilla -- I find that adding vanilla to the oatmilk makes it more enjoyable and interesting. The vanilla is optional, but it really makes the oatmilk great.
- Sweetener- A little sweetness goes a very long way when it comes to oatmilk. Brown sugar was used because it is a great option for a budget-friendly sweetener. It also adds a subtle caramel flavor. Maple syrup, however, is more expensive but even better (and more delicious). White sugar, honey, maple syrup, agave or stevia are all options.
What type of strainer to use
The oat-milk making process is not complete without straining. This step can drastically change the texture. I tried a few methods of straining to give you some choices. What I found was:
- Cheesecloth or Nut Bags are good options if you're planning to make lots of oatmilk. They are inexpensive, and many can be washed and reused (check the packaging for the cheesecloth as some aren't reusable depending on quality). It is important to not squeeze liquids through cheesecloth or nut bags. The starches in the milk will thicken and become slimy if you squeeze it.
- Metal Sieves : Metal sieves have a very large weave, and allow for a lot of oat particles to pass through. This can lead to a milk that is thick and powdery. If this is the only option, stacking two strainers together can be very helpful.
- Lint Free Dishcloth The tight weave of a dishcloth makes it difficult for the oatmilk to pass through. This method was messy, and I had squeeze the oats in order to allow the milk to flow through.
- Metal Filter : I loved using metal coffee filters to strain oatmilk! The metal coffee filter was my favorite strainer for oat milk. It produced the perfect texture and was easy to wash and reuse. If you have one on hand or are looking to invest in oat-milk making, this is your best option.
Can you Froth Homemade Oat milk?
Unfortunately, I was unable to create a foamy oat drink using a handheld frother. Oats don't contain enough fat or protein to produce a stable foam. Store-bought milk is usually thickened or stabilized to make it foam.
How to Enjoy Oat Milk
This oat-milk was so delicious that I wanted to drink it right out of the jar. You will need to shake the oatmilk very before pouring it every time.
It's great in coffee, or over cereal (or oatmeal - how meta). This oat-milk has not been tested for baking or as a replacement for dairy milk, so proceed with caution. You should be aware that oatmilk does not have as much protein or fat as dairy milk. This may affect how it reacts in recipes.
Tips for Making Homemade Oat Milk
- Roll oats instead of quick oats for a light, creamy, and refreshing oatmilk
- Avoid a slimy texture by using cold water
- Do not squeeze the oatmilk through the strainer.
- Let the oatmilk cool completely in the fridge before serving.
- Before enjoying, shake the oatmilk well every time.

Notes
How to make Oat milk - Step by step photos
You can make your own oatmilk with 4 cups of cold water, 1 cup of rolled oats, (NOT quick-oats), 1/2 tsp vanilla, 1/4 tsp sea salt, and sweetener (2 Tbsp. brown sugar).
Stir until sugar is dissolved. Add 2 Tbsp of brown sugar to 4 cups of cold water. The rolled oats mixture, along with the salt and water, should be added to a blender. I used the big blender to make a four-cup recipe, but also tried a half cup batch in our mini-blender and it worked perfectly.
Blend the oats with water for no longer than 30 seconds! You can use your phone or watch to keep track of the time so that you don't count too quickly or too slowly. If you over-blend the mixture, it can result in a thick and slimy oatmilk.
Pour the mixture immediately through a strainer and into a bowl. The oatmilk is poured in a nutbag supported by a metal sieve over the bowl. You can also use metal coffee filters or cheesecloth (see the blog text above for more details).
For the best taste, chill the oatmilk completely (like overnight). This is because it's homemade, and there are no added stabilizers or emulsifiers. It will separate as shown in the picture above. Give it a good shaking before you enjoy it every time, and it'll be just as good as rain!
Make a half-batch if you need to to ensure that nothing goes to waste.

How To
How to Cut Shiitake Mushrooms?
The shiitakes seem to be doing well. There is nothing wrong with them. But how do they be cut? We have tried every method, including using scissors. But they keep slipping out of our hands. What is the deal?
There's a trick to that. Put a rubber band around your mushroom stem and twist it tight. You won't slip or cut yourself.
This may seem too simple. Well, it is. It's also extremely effective.
The rubber band makes your stem slippery and it feels very natural when you pick it it up. You can also hold the stem tight.
Try it now. It's so easy to chop mushrooms now.
