So saucy, so sticky, so so good! You can prepare and marinate all the ingredients in advance! Serve over rice + veggies.

This recipe is so easy to make with a homemade teriyaki. This recipe is a delicious combination of sweet, savory and sticky.

You can marinate the chicken ahead of time (breasts make a delicious sub, if you wish) and reduce your prep work when it's ready to be served.

Then, just throw them on the grill and cook until they are sticky and charred. Baste with homemade teriyaki.

Serve with rice and any vegetables you may have. This is a great quick meal for weeknights or entertaining guests on a warm summer evening. This is takeout at home, but so much better.

Can I use chicken breasts?

Chicken thighs are a better choice than chicken breasts because they have a darker meat and more fat. This will result in juicier chicken that is more flavorful when cooked on the grill.

I don't have time to make teriyaki sauce, but I do have the ingredients. Can I use store-bought teriyaki sauce?

Yes, and yes. Some of my favorite store-bought brands are Kinder's (sweet/salty/garlicky) and Yamasa (best Japanese-style IMO and a little less sweet).

What if I don't have a grill?

No grill, no problem. This can be done with a cast iron grill pan, or even a large skillet.

Grilled Teriyaki Chicken

So saucy, so sticky, so so good! You can prepare and marinate all the ingredients in advance! Serve over rice + veggies.
Prep Time: 2 hours, 15 minutes
Cook Time 20 Minutes
Total Time: 2 hours, 35 minutes and 15 seconds
Servings six Servings

Ingredients

  • 2 teaspoons cornstarch
  • 1/2 cup reduced sodium soy sauce
  • 3 tablespoons mirin
  • 2 tablespoons brown sugar
  • 2 tablespoons honey
  • 1 tablespoon freshly grated ginger
  • 3 cloves garlic minced
  • 2 teaspoons toasted sesame oil
  • 2 pounds skinless, boneless chicken thighs
  • 1 tablespoon canola oil
  • 2 green onions thinly sliced
  • 1 teaspoon toasted sesame seeds

Instructions

  • Stir together 1/4 cup of cold water with cornstarch in a small saucepan on medium heat. Stir in the soy sauce and mirin. Add honey, ginger, sesame, garlic, and brown sugar. Bring to a rolling boil, reduce heat, and simmer, stirring frequently, for about 4-5 min. Let cool down completely.
  • Combine chicken with 1/2 cup TERIYAKI SAUCE in a gallon-size Ziploc bag, or a large bowl. Marinate for 2 hours up to overnight. Turn the bag every so often. Drain the chicken and discard the marinade.
  • Pre-heat grill to medium heat. Brush the chicken with canola.
  • Cook chicken on grill for 10 minutes, rotating it occasionally. The chicken should be cooked to 165 degrees F. Brush TERIYAKI SAUCE on chicken and cook for 1-2 more minutes.
  • Garnish with sesame and green onion if desired. Serve with the remaining SAUCE TERIYAKI.
