Is there anything celebrities CAN’T do?

This recipe would not be here if not for the herculean efforts of movie stars Rock Hudson and Elizabeth Taylor. While shooting the film Giant back in 1955, they decided to go wild and add chocolate syrup and chocolate liqueur to a vodka martini. (For the director’s sake, I hope they conducted this mixological experiment at the end of the day’s shooting and not in the morning!) Apparently, both were happy with the results. Thus, the Chocolate Martini Cocktail was born.

Now, this story comes to us from Hudson’s own memoirs so its accuracy is open for debate. Regardless, the world is better having welcomed this drink into its grateful arms. At least, I am better having welcomed it. Vodka martinis are sometimes a little too heady for my liking, especially if I plan on lasting an entire cocktail party. An injection of choco goodness combats that by sweetening it up. The result is a well-balanced mix of sophistication and fun.

What is the best Vodka to Use?

Your options can be divided into two camps: flavored and unflavored. I like sweet drinks as much as the next person but I get a sugar rush (and then some) from the Baileys liqueur, syrup, and shavings; I don’t need my vodka to deliver on that front too. And given that there are three ounces of vodka in the cocktail, I would prefer something smoother to balance out the rest of the liqueurs. So opt for a premium vodka: Grey Goose, Tito’s, Belvedere, Ketel One, Ciroc. If you want a flavored vodka, you can easily find one made with a hint of chocolate, or you can complement the chocolate with another flavor: marshmallow, berry, espresso. Pretty much anything you would put on a chocolate sundae.

Is Chocolate Liqueur and Creme de Cacao the Same Thing?

I don’t think there’s a clear distinction, though creme de cacao seems to be made with cocoa, as opposed to chocolate liqueur, which is made with chocolate. What’s more, chocolate liqueur covers all manner of chocolate-flavored liqueurs, which can be made with any spirit as its base. Creme de cacao is usually made with a neutral spirit like vodka.

INGREDIENTS

  • 3 oz. vodka
  • 3 oz. Irish Cream I like Baileys
  • 3 oz. chocolate liqueur

  • chocolate shavings and cocoa powder (for garnish)

FAQs

What glass and garnish should I use?

Given it’s a martini, use a martini glass. As for garnish, you should be set what with the chocolate shavings, powder, and syrup already applied. But if you want more choco-ness, you can add a milk & white chocolate stick (you could even try using them as a straw!).

How do I store a Chocolate Martini?

Assuming you’ve made the mix but haven’t prepped the glass, you can put a lid on the shaker and store it in the fridge for up to 2 days. When ready for more, give it a good shake, prep your martini glass, and pour.

How many calories are in this chocolate martini cocktail?

We counted 475 calories in this particular version, with pretty much every ingredient contributing more than a few to the cause. You can try to find a light vodka but that’s like the person who supersizes their fast-food combo but asks for a diet soda. There’s little point. If you’re going to indulge in a sweet treat, INDULGE. After a sip or two, you may want to dial down the chocolate but you won’t know till you try it.

Can I use an Irish cream other than Baileys?

Of course. While Baileys is a popular choice that’s easy to find, it’s not the preferred Irish cream for everyone. Experiment with different kinds and find one you like most.

name some chocolate liqueurs.

Godiva seems to be the go-to chocolate liqueur, probably on the strength of the brand’s association with chocolate. But there are others out there. Godet White Chocolate, Marie Brizard, and Mozart all make distinguished chocolate liqueurs you can try with your Chocolate Martini Cocktail.

Other Chocolate-Flavored Shots & Cocktails To Try

  • Virgin Chocolate Martini Cocktail: Omit the vodka and use a chocolate-flavored coffee creamer instead of the Baileys (Baileys actually makes such a product and should be available in the dairy aisle of your grocery store).
  • Blow Job: 1/2 oz. Kahlua, 1/2 oz. Baileys, topped with whipped cream
  • B-52: 1/2 oz. Kahlua, 1/2 oz. Baileys, 1/2 oz. Grand Marnier
  • Bushwacker: 1 oz each of dark rum, Kahlua, Baileys, creme de cacao, and amaretto; 2 oz cream of coconut, whipped cream, and a cherry on top!

Frequently Asked Questions

What herb is best for healing?

Herbs are a fantastic way to help heal our bodies. Herbal medicine has been used since ancient times and continues to grow today. There are thousands of herbs known to cure various ailments.

Some herbs are excellent for treating colds and flu, while others can treat anxiety, depression, arthritis, cancer, diabetes, heart disease, and more.

There are also herbal remedies for skin care, hair loss, weight loss, sexual health, energy, sleep, digestion, and much more.

The list goes on and on. But one herb stands above them all regarding its ability to heal. That herb is called aloe vera.

Aloe Vera is considered to be the world's most powerful healer. For centuries it has helped people heal themselves naturally without any side effects.

It's incredible how well aloe vera works. It's even better than prescription drugs and surgery.

In addition to its natural healing properties, aloe vera is highly versatile and can be used in almost any area of life, including food, beauty products, and household cleaning supplies.

You may not realize this, but aloe vera contains hundreds of active compounds, which include vitamins A, C, E, B1, B2, B3, B6, folic acid, calcium, magnesium, iron, zinc, copper, sulfur, manganese, phosphorus, potassium, sodium, chloride, fluoride, iodine, selenium and more.

These nutrients are essential for human body functions such as cell growth, metabolism, immune system support, healthy bones and teeth, healthy blood pressure levels, healthy eyesight, healthy cardiovascular systems, healthy digestive systems, healthy lungs, healthy nervous system, healthy reproductive organs, healthy skin, and healthy libido.

How is basil used for medicinal purposes?

In ancient times, doctors would prescribe basil leaves to treat colds and coughs. Today, basil contains powerful anti-inflammatory properties, making it an ideal remedy for arthritis, asthma, bronchitis, eczema, gout, hay fever, indigestion, migraines, menstrual cramps, sinus infections, sore throats, ulcers, varicose veins, and more.

Basil is also known for its ability to help protect against cancer, heart disease, diabetes, skin conditions, and even aging.

Basil is often referred to as "the herb of grace" because it helps us relax and unwind after stressful situations. It is also said to improve memory and concentration, boost energy levels, increase libido, and enhance athletic performance.

The list goes on and on. Basil is a versatile plant that offers a wide range of benefits for our health and well-being.

How to make herbal remedies at home?

Making herbal remedies at home is easy. All you need is fresh herbs, water, salt, and sugar. You can use any herb, depending on what you want to create.

For example, choose mint, basil, chamomile, or lemon balm to make a soothing tea. If you want to make a cooling drink, try rosemary, thyme, lavender, or eucalyptus.

All you need to do is put all the ingredients into a pot and boil them until they become soft. Strain out the herbs and serve hot.

Add honey to the boiling mixture to make a tonic drink. Honey is a preservative and will keep your herbal remedy fresh for longer.

You can also combine two or three herbs to make a more potent brew. For instance, you could mix equal parts of garlic and ginger to make a powerful antiseptic. Or you can combine equal amounts of turmeric and ginger to make a potent immune booster.

Soak a clean cloth in warm water and place it over the affected area to make a compress. Leave it for 10 minutes before removing it. Do this every day until the swelling goes down.

Make sure you consult your doctor first before using herbal remedies. Some plants may interact negatively with other medications. Also, don't take large quantities of herbs because they can cause side effects.

Is eating raw basil good for you?

I'm sure everyone knows that fresh herbs are great for cooking but did you know that you could eat them too? Raw, uncooked herbs are packed full of nutrients and vitamins that we normally have to cook.

They contain more antioxidants than any fruit or vegetable. And they also help our immune systems stay strong and healthy.

The best way to enjoy these delicious little green gems is to eat them raw from the garden. But there's nothing wrong with enjoying them cooked, either. They taste even better when sautéed in olive oil and served alongside pasta or rice.

There are lots of ways to incorporate raw herbs into recipes. Add them to salads, soups, sandwiches, wraps, omelets, stir-fries, and pesto.

Just make sure you wash them well first!

How To

What to look for in herbs?

Herbs contain natural compounds that may help treat various conditions. In addition, herbal remedies may provide relief when used along with conventional treatments.

Herbal remedies include teas, capsules, tablets, ointments, creams, lotions, oils, and topical applications. Some of these products are meant to be taken internally, while others are applied externally.

The most common uses of herbal remedies include relieving minor aches and pains, treating cold symptoms, reducing fever, controlling coughs and sore throats, easing digestion problems, soothing skin irritations, alleviating menstrual cramps, and providing general health benefits.

When buying herbs, look for the following:

  • Freshly picked plants. Avoid dried herbs unless they've been stored in a cool place. If possible, buy herbs directly from farmers' markets.
  • Pure extracts. These are made by extracting the active ingredients from herbs using alcohol or water. Look for 100% pure extractions.
  • Certified organic herbs. Organic herbs must meet strict standards set forth by the USDA.
  • Natural flavors. Many herbs have strong scents that can overwhelm other foods. Adding flavorings such as vanilla, almond, or orange helps mask their smell.
  • Potency. The amount of active ingredient per unit weight varies depending on the type of herb.
  • Packaging. When purchasing herbs, check the packaging to ensure that it's clean and free of chemicals.
