Now love yourself and enjoy this one ...
Chili is one of my favorites of the winter-fall season. It's easy to prepare, the leftovers make amazing and it is incredibly hearty and cozy. From September to March, this is all I crave. This simple black bean recipe is also delicious, as it has a lighter, brighter taste and I love black beans. All the black beans, all the time! If you want to prepare a meal for the week, or simply something to warm you up as the weather outside becomes colder and cooler, this black bean chili is for you!
What is in Black Bean Chili?
Instead of just replacing all black beans with my classic chili, I changed the flavor profile slightly. I added green chiles and tangy tomatoes to the chili, giving it a brighter flavor. I added smoked paprika to the mix because it goes well with black beans. To make the black beans the main attraction, I used only half of the ground meat I use in my classic chili. This also helps to keep the recipe budget-friendly!
Ingredients of Black Bean Chili
What you will need to make this hearty and delicious pot of black bean Chili:
- Onion & Garlic: To get the savory base flavor, any pot of chili will start with plenty onion and garlic.
- Ground beef: For this recipe I only used a half-pound of ground meat, but you could increase that to a pound if your preference is for a meatier chili. You can substitute ground turkey with this recipe if you prefer.
- Tomatoes For this chili, I combined diced tomatoes and green chiles with tomato paste. The green chiles give the diced tomatoes a zesty flavor and texture. The tomato paste gives the chili a richness and thickens it.
- Spices and herbs: This chili's spice blend starts with a heavy dose of chili powder. We then add extra cumin to give it a bit more earthiness. Then we add smoked paprika and oregano. Finally, we season the chili with salt and pepper. Add a bit of cayenne pepper if you prefer your chili hot!
Chili Toppings
The fun toppings that you can add are one of the main reasons why I love chili. This is a great way to use up any leftovers you may have in your pantry or fridge. It can also add a lot of color and texture. Here are my favorite toppings to use with black bean chili.
- Pickled or fresh jalapenos
- Red onion dice
- Avocado
- Green onion slices
- Cilantro
- Crushed tortilla chips
- Sour cream
- Cheddar cheese
- Fresh lime juice
- Avocado dice
- Pico de gallo
Serve with Jalapeno Cheddar Cornbread as a side!

How to make black bean chili - step by step photos
Start by dicing a yellow onion, and then mincing four garlic cloves. In a large pot, sauté the garlic and onions with 1 Tbsp of olive oil over medium heat for 2 to 3 minutes.
Continue to cook until the meat has cooked through.
Add three 15oz. Add three 15oz. Can of diced tomato with green chiles, one 6oz. Can of tomato paste with 1 Tbsp of chili powder, 1 Tsp of cumin, 1 Tsp of smoked paprika and 1/2 tsp of oregano. Add 2 cups of water.
Stir the ingredients until they are evenly mixed. Turn up the heat to medium high, cover the pot and let the chili come to a rolling boil. Stir the chili once it reaches a rolling boil. Replace the lid and turn the heat down to medium.
Allow the chili to simmer on medium heat for 15 minutes. This will blend the flavors and help thicken the sauce. Taste it and add salt as needed. I added around 1/2 tsp. That's all! You're DONE making dinner!
You can add your favorite toppings to the dish and have fun! Divide it into single serving portions and store in the refrigerator for easy-to-heat, ready-to-eat meals throughout the rest of the weekend.
