Frequently Asked Questions
Is organic food good for you?
There are two types. Those we grow or those we get from someone else. Although there are exceptions to each category, most of the answers to your question are yes. Organic food is safer because it does not contain any harmful chemicals.
You can find organic food in supermarkets across North America, Europe, Asia, Latin America, and Africa. Organic food is now available in most grocery stores, making it easier to find organic foods.
Organic food tastes better and is more nutritious, as it has higher levels of vitamins and minerals. Organics are also grown without the use of pesticides or synthetic fertilizers, so they don't pollute our soils and water supplies.
The USDA regulates organic farming practices. It requires that farmers follow strict guidelines in order to ensure organic produce is safe for consumption. There are over 30,000,000 acres of US agricultural land that has been certified organic.
Organic food can often be cheaper than conventional food. Customers pay less for the same amount in calories, protein and nutrients. Organic farms don't have the expense of expensive chemical inputs, such as insecticides and/or fungicides. They can charge lower prices.
According to Environmental Working Group, organic food can be 10 percent cheaper per pound when compared to conventionally produced food. Consider switching to organic foods if you are concerned about your health and the well-being of your family.
Organic food is becoming a popular option to the standard American diet. It is often believed that organic food is exclusive to specialty markets and gourmet restaurants. Organic food is easily available in all regular grocery stores in the United States.
In recent years organic food sales increased substantially. The US market value of organic foods was $43Billion in 2012, up from $21B in 2007.
What are the top organic vegetables?
Organic vegetables are the highest quality and healthiest food source. They are considered to be the healthiest foods on earth.

All grocery stores can carry organic produce. They can be labeled organic if they are grown according to USDA guidelines.
Are organic foods good for your health?
Some organic foods may not prove to be good for you. For those who consume them regularly, however, they can offer certain health benefits.
Organic food does not contain artificial fertilizers or pesticides. It also doesn't contain fungicides. Organic produce does not contain harmful chemicals that could be harmful to the human body.
Additionally, organic products are less likely to contain additives during processing. You're more likely to eat organic products than you are non-organic.
Studies show that organic foods contain more nutrients and antioxidants than conventionally grown fruits and vegetables.
Even though organic farming methods can be more costly than conventional farming methods they are often more productive. Organic farming increases soil fertility and biodiversity.
This helps protect against erosion and conserve water resources. Organic farms don't use toxic chemicals and require less fuel and energy.
People are worried that organic foods may be more expensive then conventional. However, prices will vary depending on where one lives. For example, organic apples can be more costly than conventional apples.
However, organic fruit is more affordable if you compare the price of a basket of both types.
Do you really need to buy organic?
It depends on you. If you don't like the taste of organic food, then you probably shouldn't bother.
However, if you enjoy good-tasting food, you can buy organic food. Organic foods are safer as most commercial growers use chemical fertilisers, pesticides, or genetically modified species (GMOs) to produce their crops.

How To
Organic foods: Are organic foods healthier?
Organic foods are grown without the use chemical pesticides or synthetic fertilisers. They are grown under natural conditions without artificial inputs such as fungicides, insecticides, herbicides, hormones, antibiotics, or genetic engineering. Organic farming practices include crop rotation, cover crops, composting animal manure, recycling wastewater, and integrated pest management (IPM).
The USDA National Organic Program (NOP), established in 2002 to regulate production, handling and processing of organic products sold in the United States. NOP regulations assure that organic agricultural products comply with the Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act. Additionally, organic products must not contain prohibited substances like pesticide residues or genetically modified organisms.
The United States offers two certification programs for producers that want their products to be certified organic: one for farmers, ranchers and the other for manufacturers. Both programs require audits of operations each year to ensure that they are meeting strict standards. Several certifying agents offer these services, including CCOF Certified Organic Farmers & Ranchers, Quality Assurance International, and the American Grassfed Association. All three organizations provide third-party verification of farms' adherence to strict guidelines regarding environmental stewardship, labour practices, and livestock care.
According to USDA’s Economic Research Service, organic farming accounted for $4.7Billion in 2013 sales. Retail spending on certified organic products reached nearly $1.5 Billion in 2013. This is a 23 per cent increase from 2009. This period saw a 12 percent increase in grocery store sales. Spending directly on organic produce grew by 29 percent while that on meat, poultry, eggs and seafood only grew by 1 percent.
Organic food is more expensive but the quality of organic food is worth it. Consumer Reports found that 88 per cent of respondents would be willing to pay more for organic food if the nutritional value was higher. A Health Affairs study also found that organic food consumers are less likely to develop health problems such as diabetes, cancer, obesity, heart disease, depression, and other diseases.
Even though there is no evidence organic foods cause or treat diseases, some studies show that they can improve overall health by reducing pesticide and other contaminants exposure. A review of 31 studies that were published in 2010 found that organically raised beef has significantly lower levels than conventionally raised beef. Similar conclusions were reached in a separate analysis of 11 other studies published in 2012.
The Environmental Working Group's 2014 report examined data from the Department of Agriculture’s Agricultural Marketing Resource Center. It found that foodborne illnesses caused by E.coli, salmonella and listeria monocytogenes and verotoxin producing E.coli O157:H7 declined when organic and non-organic chickens, meat, lamb, dairy, and cheese were compared. The Environmental Working Group also found that E.coli O157 has been associated with fewer human illnesses in children and adults since 2006, when USDA began requiring stricter organic standards for animal production.
