Frequently Asked Questions
Is organic the same as pesticide-free?
Organic food is naturally chemical-free and grows without pesticides. This means organic food is free from pesticides and fertilizers.
Because organic produce is free of harmful additives, it also has more nutrients than conventionally grown foods.
Farmers must follow strict guidelines to grow organic crops under the USDA National Organic Program (NOP).
These guidelines include soil preparation, crop rotating, pest control and water conservation.
Organic farming also promotes healthy ecosystems which are beneficial to wildlife and natural habitats.
What are the most loved organic products?
Today, organic foods are the fastest-growing industries. We've come far from our roots but there is still room for improvement.
Organic products are the future. Organic products are safer and better for the environment. They also make it more affordable for consumers.
But they also tend to be higher priced. That's why we created the Organic Food Index. We wanted to see which foods are most in demand today and how these trends are changing.
The results show that organic food is becoming increasingly popular. Between 2011 and 2012, the number of Americans who shop for organic food increased by almost 50%.
According to the USDA, organic production increased by 10% last year alone. Organic food now accounts for 9% of U.S. agricultural output.
While organic food is certainly gaining ground, it seems that it is still an expensive choice for consumers. The Organic Trade Association (OTA) reports that organic food retail prices average almost double the price of conventional foods.
Despite this, organic food is growing at a faster rate than any other food segment. You can see that organic food has been steadily increasing since 2009.
According to OTA's data, organic products sold in supermarkets grew at 14% between 2010 - 2011.
This is because of consumer demand for healthier products, which explains the rise in organic food sales across all age categories.
Younger generations are also leading the way in organic food choices. Millennials have twice the likelihood of buying organic food as baby boomers. Young adults aged below 35 account for 25%.
How can you tell whether food is organic?
If you ask any chef, he'll tell you there's nothing more important than fresh ingredients. This is because eating well makes us feel better.
This holds true for our food. When we buy organics, we know exactly where it came from and how it was grown. We also know that organics were not treated with harmful chemicals.
Organic food does not contain synthetic pesticides, fertilers, hormones or antibiotics. These substances are not permitted to organic farmers.
But that doesn't mean there isn't an art to growing organic crops. There are many safe ways to grow them.
Many people refer to organic agriculture as sustainable agriculture. It is a less resource-intensive alternative to conventional farming, but still provides enough nutrients to sustain life.
Organic farming methods include crop rotations, composting manure and cover cropping. These techniques reduce soil erosion and increase water quality.
They reduce the amount of chemical runoff that can enter waterways. Since most of us live in urban areas, we can find local farms that raise organic produce.
There are two types of certification programs for organic products. The USDA National Organic Program certifies one, while independent certifying agencies certification the other. Both require strict conformity to organic standards.
Certified organic products may bear the USDA seal or the symbol O Seal, which indicates that the product meets federal requirements.
What are organic foods?
Organic produce is produced without synthetic fertilizers or pesticides. There is no use of growth hormones and no animal testing. These crops are allowed to grow naturally, so farmers do not use chemicals to prevent weeds or pests.
Organic farming practices preserve soil quality and help conserve water resources. Organics contain more nutrients than regular food and are therefore better for our overall health. Organic products are more nutritious than conventionally grown foods and have lower calories and fiber.

Are there any disadvantages to purchasing organic products
Organic food is well-known for its many health benefits. There are, however, some drawbacks. These include higher consumer prices, lower quality standards, and fewer choices.
It's okay to want more variety in grocery shopping. We're conditioned to expect low-quality foods that taste bad. That's why you'll find most grocery stores stocked with identical prepackaged products.
But today, organic food is becoming increasingly popular because it offers better nutrition and tastes great. How can you convince people it is worth spending a little more?
You could also tell them organic food is more expensive. It doesn't change the fact that organic food tastes more delicious. This might make them suspicious about your motives.
Instead, it would be best if you highlighted its advantages. Organic food is richer in nutrients and contains fewer pesticides and antibiotics. Organic food is free from synthetic fertilizers and herbicides which makes it healthier for us as well as our environment.
