Research shows that children, fetuses and adults who consume organic foods have lower exposure to certain types of pesticides. These chemicals can cause neurodevelopmental problems, disorders and diseases including autism, ADHD and asthma.
A new study finds that eating a fully organic diet significantly reduces your family’s exposure to four classes of pesticides in just six days.
Reduced Pesticide Exposure
Eating a diet rich in fruits and vegetables is one of the best things you can do for your health. But the pesticides used to grow those foods may be harmful if you eat too many of them. Choosing organic produce greatly reduces your exposure because the rules for organic farming prohibit the use of synthetic pesticides. Organic farmers also limit spraying to times when monitored pest pressures threaten crops and after nonchemical control options such as using good bugs to kill bad ones have failed.
A recent study by scientists at Emory University, the University of Washington and the Centers for Disease Control found that when families switched to a diet of only organic produce (excluding those on the Environmental Working Group’s Dirty Dozen list), levels of two common pesticides in their urine dropped to undetectable levels within five days. Similar results have been reported in other studies.
Reduced Risk of Cancer
A major study conducted by Oxford University found that women who always or mostly eat organic foods have a lower risk of cancer than those who rarely eat organic food. They looked at the habits of around 600,000 women and followed them for nine years.
Those in the quartile with the highest organic food score had a 25 percent lower risk of cancer than those in the lowest scoring quartile. They also had a lower rate of some specific types of cancer, including non-Hodgkin lymphoma and post-menopausal breast cancer.
However, the researchers acknowledged that more research is needed to verify their findings. Even if it turns out that organic foods do reduce cancer risks, it will be important to keep in mind the many other factors known to reduce the disease. For example, a healthy diet low in red meat and high in fruits and vegetables is well established as a cancer prevention strategy. The Cancer Council recommends consuming two serves of fruit and five servings of veggies each day.
Reduced Risk of Birth Defects
In addition to folic acid, there are several things that pregnant women can do to reduce their risk of birth defects. One of those is eating organic foods. A groundbreaking study out of Norway has linked the consumption of organic food to a lower risk of certain birth defects.
The study focused on two male urogenital birth defects: hypospadias (where the opening of the penis is on the underside instead of at the tip) and cryptorchidism (where either or both testes fail to enter the scrotum). Researchers found that mothers who reported consuming any organic food in their pregnancy were 0.42 times less likely to have a baby boy with hypospadias than mothers who never or seldom ate organic food. There was a similar reduction in the risk of cryptorchidism with maternal consumption of organic dairy products.
Researchers were able to control for many potential confounding factors in the study, but some remain, such as differences in lifestyle and other dietary choices that could account for the results. Despite this, the findings still held.
Reduced Risk of Asthma
Several studies have linked a diet rich in fresh fruits and vegetables with reduced asthma symptoms. For example, a recent study found that people who eat a lot of carrots (and other orange and red fruits and vegetables) have less trouble with their asthma. Researchers believe that this may be because carrots contain beta-carotene, an antioxidant that helps fight free radicals that can damage cells.
Other asthma-fighting foods include kale, mustard greens, and sweet potatoes. These foods are rich in vitamins C and E, which are both antioxidants that help reduce inflammation. In addition, eating a diet high in whole grains can help lower your risk of asthma, according to a 2018 study.
Moreover, eating organic foods can help you avoid chemical preservatives and food colouring agents. These chemicals can irritate the lungs and trigger wheezing in some asthma patients. Additionally, try to steer clear of sulfites, which are common preservatives in dried fruits and vegetables, pickled foods, wine, beer, and some processed foods.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is organic food?
Organic produce does not contain synthetic fertilizers, pesticides and sewage sludge. It is also grown without irradiation or genetic engineering. There is no use of growth hormones and no animal testing. These crops are allowed natural growth, so farmers don't use chemicals to kill pests and weeds.
Organic farming methods also help to preserve soil quality, reduce erosion, and conserve water resources. Organic foods are healthier than conventional foods because they have more nutrients. Organic products are more nutritious than conventionally grown foods and have lower calories and fiber.

What is organic beef?
Organic meat is real food grown without pesticides, artificial fertilizers, or hormones. Organic meat also indicates that animals were not fed genetically modified food. This means that the meat is safe for consumption as there aren’t any harmful chemicals.
Organic meats are also healthier for the environment. The pollution levels in our environment are reduced when we eat organic foods. Organic farmers generally don't use toxic chemicals that kill birds and insects. We help to protect wildlife.
Locally purchasing organic meats is the best way to make sure you are eating healthy and organic meats. Local purchases help keep more money within the community than traveling out of state. Local businesses often pass down savings to customers when they shop locally. Shopping locally keeps American jobs in America, rather than sending them abroad.
Why should organic be my first choice?
Many health issues have been linked to conventional agriculture, including obesity, diabetes and cancer. Make healthy food choices.
The Environmental Working Group (EWG) offers the following tips on how to pick "cleaner" food:
Always purchase organic fruits, vegetables and other products whenever possible.
USDA organic labels for meat, poultry eggs, milk and cheese as well butter and honey are recommended.
Avoid processed foods marked "natural" or with "no additives."
Be sure to read all ingredient labels. If an ingredient is not listed, it can be added during processing.
Fresh meats are better than canned or frozen. Canned and frozen foods can often have lower nutritional content like high fructose syrup.
What are the things to look for when purchasing organic products?
USDA-certified organic labels should be sought. This certifies that the product has met certain standards set by USDA. Look for the "USDA Organic" seal on packages, boxes, cartons, cans, and jars.
When purchasing meat, ensure it is 100% organic. Cattle are ruminants which means that they chew the cud. Ruminant cattle have four stomach areas: rumen (reticulum), omasum (omasum), and abomasum. Organic feeding must be done on all organs of the animal in order to get the cow labelled organic 100 percent.
Make sure you only buy chicken from chicken farms that are fed organically and have never been given antibiotics. Chickens can eat both animal and plant food. A digestive tract that is omnivorous includes a crop, proventriculus and gizzard. It also contains small intestines, large intestines, and anus.
You should ensure you only buy dairy products made from milk that has been produced by cows who have been fed 100% organically grown food. Dairy cows have four stomach compartments, just like ruminants. The fourth stomach, or the udder is where you get milk.
You should always check the label before purchasing any other livestock. This will let you know what percentage of the diet was given to the animals. A label for pork might say "95% organic", which means that 95% of the feed used by the pork came from organic sources.
Which organic vegetables are best?
Organic vegetables are the best and most nutritious food source. They are the healthiest of all foods.
Organic produce can be grown without the use of pesticides herbicides fungicides and chemical fertilizers. These chemicals can pose serious risks to our environment and health.
Organic produce is also richer in nutrients, vitamins, minerals and antioxidants. Organic produce is more nutritious and healthier.
Organic vegetables are delicious and safe to eat. There are no known side effects associated with consuming organic produce.
You can find organic fruits and veggies at any grocery store. Organic produce can be found at any grocery store as long as it is produced in accordance with USDA guidelines. This means that they must meet the standards established by the United States Department of Agriculture.
Organic meat is better
You probably know the answer if you have been paying attention for a while. The problem is that organic food is increasingly popular, but conventional food continues its decline.
The reason why organic foods continue to rise in popularity is that they are healthier for us. Organic products are healthier for us and the environment.
There are two sides to the coin. Organic produce takes longer to grow, and it requires more resources. Organic food can be more expensive than its nonorganic counterpart.
Organic meats can be more expensive that those from conventionally raised animals. There are however ways to lower these costs without sacrificing the quality of organic meats.
Buy locally to save money. Buying locally grown fruits and vegetables helps keep prices low because farmers receive incentives to grow healthy crops.
Look for bargains to cut down on costs. When you purchase organics, there are often discounts.
Finally, another way to save money is by eating less meat. Due to the cost of raising livestock, meat production can be expensive.
While there are many reasons organic food is better for our bodies as well as the planet, we must not forget the cost.

How To
How to buy organic meat even on a tight budget
Here are some tips and tricks that will help you save money on organic meat.
You will learn where to buy cheap organic meats, and what they cost per pound. Learn how to get maximum value from the products you buy.
Healthy eating doesn't require you to spend a lot. Sometimes, it takes a bit of creativity to save money while eating well. Here are my top tips for keeping food costs down and still enjoying the many benefits of organic meat.
- Buy bulk food at wholesale clubs. Sams Club and Costco both offer great options for buying bulk foods like pork chops and chicken breasts. You can often find deals on large quantities (up to 50 pounds) if you live close to one of these stores. This way you won't end up with any leftover meat. You can also freeze the meat if you buy it bulk.
- Shop around online - Tons of websites sell meat at discounted prices. Amazon offers Prime Pantry, a weekly deal with free shipping on orders above $35. They offer discounts for beef roasts and ground beef as well as lamb steaks, lamb steaks, pork loins, and other items. It is easy to browse their website and check out what is on offer at different times.
- Locate a farmer in your area. Local farmers are usually cheaper than big box retailers as they don’t pay high stocking fees. They also know what their animals ate and drink so they can tell exactly what is inside.
- Choose lean cuts of meat - It is usually cheaper to cook lean meat than fatty. So, look for the leanest cuts. The most common ones are sirloin steak, tenderloin roast, top round steak, and flank steak. These cuts are very low in fat and high in protein.
- You don't have to be afraid to try new recipes. It's possible to reduce grocery expenses by cooking new recipes using ingredients you've never tried before. It's possible to create delicious meals with fresh tomatoes, onions and garlic using olive oil, spices, and garlic.
- Be creative with leftovers - If you have leftover cooked meat or poultry, use them for sandwiches, salads, soups, casseroles, etc. For quick lunches, leftover meat can be used to make dinners.
So there you go! Here are some tips on how you can afford organic meat despite being on a strict budget. Do you have any other tips? Have any other tips for me about where to buy cheap meat?
