A new study suggests that people who eat organic foods are at lower risk of cancer. The study found that those who consumed the most organic foods had a 25 percent lower rate of cancer overall and for certain specific types including non-Hodgkin lymphoma, and postmenopausal breast cancer.
A commentary published alongside the study notes that diet and lifestyle are still the most proven ways to reduce cancer risk.
Lower Risk of Pesticide Residue
Studies show that eating organic foods can potentially lower the risk of pesticide residue. These pesticides can be either airborne or found on the surface of food. Some of these pesticides are linked to various health problems, including cancer.
To help prevent overexposure to these chemicals, regulators set maximum residue levels (MRLs) for most pesticides and their breakdown products or moieties. Using the MRLs, regulators presumptively determine daily exposures to be safe.
Unfortunately, these presumptively safe daily exposures are based on average or expected residues in many individual samples of food, not on the actual high-end residues and associated risks present in some of the sampled foods.
The researchers surveyed more than 68,000 adults about how often they consumed 16 different groups of foods and beverages. They used this information to create an organic-food score for each participant and compared the scores to new cases of cancer, non-Hodgkin lymphoma and other chronic diseases over 4.5 years. The results showed that people who ate the most organic foods had a 25 percent lower rate of developing cancer than those who rarely or never ate organic foods.
Lower Risk of Chemicals
People who choose organic foods tend to have healthier diets overall, according to this new study. That may be because they're more likely to avoid the "dirty dozen" fruits and vegetables that have been linked to higher levels of pesticide residues — and because they're also more likely to exercise, not smoke, and to eat other cancer-fighting foods.
Researchers followed 68,946 French adults for five years. They found that people who ate the most organic foods were 25 percent less likely to develop any kind of cancer than their counterparts who didn't choose organic food as often.
When looking at specific types of cancer, the most significant reductions were seen in postmenopausal breast cancer and non-Hodgkin lymphoma. But even after taking into account a variety of factors, including age, gender, education level, family history of cancer, and body weight, the result remained the same: High consumers of organic food had a lower risk of developing any kind of cancer.
Lower Risk of Genetic Modification
Eating organic foods could potentially lower your risk of cancer because the growing process for organic crops uses fewer synthetic pesticides and herbicides. Additionally, the farms where these fruits, vegetables and meats are grown have to maintain a buffer zone from conventionally-grown farm land in order to decrease contamination. In addition, the farms are required to not use any sewage sludge, ionizing radiation or genetically modified organisms (GMO).
Furthermore, organic livestock are not given antibiotics or growth hormones and they are raised on grassy land that is not treated with chemical fertilizers. This allows the animals to build up a stronger immune system and produce more milk and meat with less stress.
In a French study, researchers found that people who consumed the most organic fruit, vegetables and dairy products experienced a 25 percent reduced cancer rate. However, this was a population-based cohort study and the results aren’t necessarily applicable to individual situations.
