Frequently Asked Questions

Why should organic be my first choice?

Many health issues have been linked to conventional agriculture, including obesity, diabetes and cancer. When buying food, you must make wise choices.

Here are some tips from the Environmental Working Group (EWG).

Always purchase organic fruits, vegetables and other products whenever possible.

USDA organic labels for meat, poultry eggs, milk and cheese as well butter and honey are recommended.

Avoid processed foods that claim to be "natural" and "no additives."

Always read the ingredient lists. If an ingredient isn’t listed, it might be added during processing.

You should choose fresh meats rather than frozen or canned. Cans and frozen foods are often less nutritious than fresh meats, such as high fructose corn syrup.

What's the difference?

Organic food is produced without pesticides, chemical fertilizers, sewage sludge, irradiation, or genetic modification. Organic farming practices support soil health, water quality, and animal welfare.

Inorganic foods can be grown using pesticides, chemical fertilizers and sewage sludge. Radiation is used to treat irradiated food; biological engineering techniques are used to create genetically modified organisms (GMO).

The term "natural", often used interchangeably to mean "organic," is frequently used. But natural does not necessarily imply organic. Some products labeled "natural" may also contain synthetic ingredients.

Organic produce is often more nutritious than conventional produce, as the soil has fewer pesticides and harmful chemicals. Organic farmers don't use any artificial fertilizers, hormones or antibiotics.

What are the benefits of organic products for skin?

Organic skincare products do not contain synthetic chemicals like parabens, phthalates, mineral oils, petroleum jelly or petrolatum.

Organic skincare products are also free of artificial colours, fragrances, preservatives, emulsifiers, GMOs, petrochemicals, animal testing (except cosmetics tested on animals), pesticides, hormones, antibiotics, heavy metals, and other contaminants.

They also have the ability to support healthy skin, prevent premature ageing, promote healing after injuries and overall well-being.

These are some of the terms that you will see when you shop for organic products

  • Paraben Free- These are chemicals that help to keep certain cosmetics stable. But, they can also be toxic if taken in large quantities.
  • Fragrance-Free: The product is free of essential oils or fragrances.
  • Cruelty free - No animals were endangered during the manufacturing process.
  • Natural Ingredients: The ingredient is naturally derived form the animal or plant.
  • Vegan/Vegetarian – The ingredients can either be vegetarian or vegan.
  • Gluten-Free - This means that gluten has been removed from the formulation.
  • Non-Toxic – The product is free of toxins, carcinogens and other dangerous compounds that can harm your health.
  • Biodegradable means that the product can be thrown away as it will become harmless components.
  • Pesticide Free - No pesticides were used during the growing or harvesting processes.
  • GMO-Free means that no ingredient in the product contains genetically modified organisms.
  • Certified Organic refers to ingredients that were grown using methods that protect soil, water, air, wildlife and farmers.

How To

Organic Foods: What You Need to Know

Organic foods are those that come from plants or animals, and do not contain any chemical pesticides, fertilizers, or additives. They can't be genetically modified or exposed to ionizing radiation. No artificial colourings, flavour enhancers, preservatives, or colourings must be used in the food. It must not contain genetically modified organisms (GMOs).

In 1845, Justus Von Liebig, an aspiring chemist and entrepreneur, created the term "organic" to describe the properties found in manure. The term organic is often associated with food production. Organic is a product that contains only naturally occurring substances, such a proteins, fats, or minerals.

The global consumption of organic products has increased dramatically over the past decade. Recent statistics show that around half of the world's population consumes at most one organic product per day. This percentage is increasing and will reach 70%, 80% and 90% by 2020.

Organic products are preferred for many reasons. Some like the taste, others prefer them because they believe organic produce is healthier, while some think organic farming is more environmentally friendly. Some consumers choose non-organic products because of ethical concerns about farm workers' and animal treatment.

Organic foods are more expensive than those made from conventional food, though prices may vary by country and region. There are many factors that affect the cost of organic food. The availability of suitable land for organic agriculture is one factor. Another is the cost of inputs and labour needed for organic cultivation. Transport costs, marketing costs and taxes are also important. In Europe, for instance, the average price for organic food in Europe is 10% higher than its regular price.
