Eating organic food reduces your risk of two specific types of cancer, according to a new French study. The study, which involved 68,946 participants, found that the most frequent consumers of organic produce had a lower incidence of postmenopausal breast cancer and non-Hodgkin lymphoma.

However, a Harvard commentary published alongside the study points to limitations, including the fact that participants self-reported how often they consumed certain foods.

Lower Risk of Pesticide Residue

In a recent study, researchers found that those who ate organic fruits and vegetables had a lower risk of developing cancer. However, more work needs to be done in order to confirm these findings.

The researchers created a new system for quantifying the number of pesticide residues and relative dietary risks in individual samples of foods. The system combines results from U.S. and UK food-testing programs with data on the frequency of a sample and its serving size, as well as each pesticide's chronic reference dose (CRfD) or Acceptable Daily Intake.

For example, a sample of green beans contained nine residues and a DRI of 39.1—three times higher than the CRfD of 30.

Nevertheless, when budgetary constraints limit your options, choosing organic versions of "dirty dozen" fruits and vegetables is an effective way to reduce cancer-causing exposures.

Another possible explanation is that those who eat more organic foods do so because they prefer the taste of the produce and believe it is better for the environment. This belief could cause them to eat more of these foods, leading to a lower overall cancer risk.

According to the USDA's Economic Research Service, organic agriculture accounted for $4.7 billion in sales in 2013. Retail spending on certified organic products reached nearly $1.5 Billion in 2013. This is a 23 per cent increase from 2009. Sales at grocery stores were up 12 percent during this period. Direct purchases of organic produce saw a 29 percent increase in spending, while seafood, meat, poultry and eggs experienced a 1 percent growth.

While organic food costs more, consumers say its quality justifies the added expense. Consumer Reports' 2015 survey found that 88% of respondents would spend more on organic food if it had higher nutritional values. Another study published in Health Affairs found that people who eat organic foods are less likely to suffer health problems like cancer, diabetes, obesity, asthma, heart disease, and depression.

There is no evidence to suggest eating organic foods can treat or prevent any diseases. However, some studies have suggested that they might be beneficial for your health as they may reduce your exposure of pesticides and contaminants. According to a 2010 review of 31 studies, organically raised beef showed significantly lower levels in toxic chemicals and parasites than conventionally produced beef. A separate analysis of 11 studies published in 2012 reached similar conclusions.

A 2014 report from the Environmental Working Group looked at data from the Department of Agriculture's Agricultural Marketing Resource Center and found that the incidence of foodborne illness caused by E. coli, salmonella, listeria monocytogenes, campylobacter, and verotoxin-producing E. coli O157:H7 decreased when comparing organic to non-organic chicken, pork, beef, lamb, milk, and cheese. After 2006, when USDA required stricter organic standards in animal raising for human consumption, the group noted that E.coli O157 was less common among children and adults.
