What should I look out for when buying organic products?
USDA-certified organic label are desirable. This certification means that the product is certified organic by USDA. Look out for the USDA Organic seal on boxes, cartons cans and jars.
When shopping for meat, ensure it comes from cows fed 100% organic feed. Cattle are ruminants. This means they chew the cud. Ruminant cattle are divided into four stomach compartments, the rumen and reticulum as well as the omasum and abmasum. If a cow is to be labeled organically, all parts must be organically fed.
You should only purchase chicken that has been raised organically. It must not have ever been treated with antibiotics. Chickens are omnivores, meaning they eat both plants and animals. Omnivorous chickens have a digestive system that includes a crop (proventriculus), gizzard and small intestine.
You should ensure you only buy dairy products made from milk that has been produced by cows who have been fed 100% organically grown food. Just like ruminants, dairy cows also have four stomachs. The fourth stomach, or the udder is where you get milk.
If you are buying other types of livestock, make sure to check the label to determine the percentage of their diet. Pork may be labeled "95% Organic" which means that 95 percent of its feed was organic.

How To
How to afford Organic Meat even when on a Budget
Here are some tips and tricks that will help you save money on organic meat.
You will learn where to buy cheap organic meats, and what they cost per pound. You will be able to make the most of what you have purchased.
To eat well, you don't have to spend a lot. Sometimes it takes creativity to save money and eat well. Here are some ways you can cut down on food expenses while still getting the best from organic meat.
- Buy bulk food at wholesale clubs. Sams Club and Costco both offer great options for buying bulk foods like pork chops and chicken breasts. These stores often offer discounts on large quantities of meat, up to 50 pounds, if you are lucky enough to be near one. This way, you won't waste any meat. It's also possible to freeze meat purchased in bulk so that it lasts longer.
- You can shop online for meat at great prices. For example, Amazon has a weekly deal called Prime Pantry, which includes free shipping on orders over $35. They offer discounts on beef roasts, ground beef, lamb steaks, and pork loins. It's easy to browse their website and see what's available at different times.
- Local farmers will usually be cheaper than big-box retailers since they don't pay large fees to stock their shelves. They know exactly what the animals ate and drank to ensure they are fully informed about what is in their bodies.
- Look out for cuts that are the leanest. It's generally less expensive to cook lean meat than fatty. Look for the tiniest cuts. The most popular cuts are flank steak, sirloin steak and tenderloin roast. These cuts are very low in fat and high in protein.
- Try new recipes. One of the easiest ways to reduce your grocery bill is to start cooking meals with ingredients you haven't used before. You may be surprised by how many delicious dishes you can come up with using fresh tomatoes, onions, garlic, olive oil, and spices.
- You can be creative with leftovers. If you have leftover poultry or meat, you can use them to make sandwiches, soups and casseroles. Remaining meat can be used for quick lunches or dinners.
So there you go! These are my top tips for how to get organic meat on a tight budget. Are there any other tips you can share? What other tips do you have for me?
