Frequently Asked Questions

How do you determine if food has been grown organically?

If you ask any chef, he'll tell you there's nothing more important than fresh ingredients. It's because we feel better when food is well-prepared.

This is true for food as well. Organics are traceable back to the source and provenance of their products. It was not treated with harmful chemicals.

Organic foods can be made without synthetic pesticides. These substances are not permitted to organic farmers.

But that doesn't mean there isn't an art to growing organic crops. You have many options to safely grow them.

Many people refer to organic agriculture as sustainable agriculture. Organic farming is more sustainable than traditional methods and provides all the nutrients necessary to sustain life.

Organic farming practices include crop rotations and cover crops, manure composting, intercropping, and cover cropping. These techniques help prevent soil erosion and improve water quality.

They also reduce chemical contamination of waterways. Because most people live in urban areas, it is easy to find farms that grow organic produce.

Two types of certification programs are available for organic products. The USDA National Organic Program certifies one, while independent certifying agencies certification the other. Both require strict organic standards to be adhered to.

Certified organic products may bear the USDA seal or the symbol O Seal, which indicates that the product meets federal requirements.

Why is organic food so important?

Organic produce is vital for our health. It's the best way to ensure we eat nutritious foods. It's healthier for us as well as more environmentally-friendly because it doesn’t rely on pesticides, fertilizers, or other chemicals.

Organic farming uses natural methods to grow crops without harmful chemicals. This reduces the risk of environmental pollution, which makes it safer for people and animals. You are helping the planet and yourself by choosing organic food.

However, organic food is good for our health. We all know how bad processed food can make us feel. However, organic fruits & vegetables aren’t treated with chemical sprays. That means that they taste fresher, look brighter and last longer too.

Because of this, organic foods are so important. Because organic is healthier for you as well as for the world.

Why should you buy organic?

Conventional agriculture has been linked to several health problems, including asthma, allergies, obesity, diabetes, cancer, birth defects, hormone imbalances, and other diseases. You must make healthy choices when buying food.

The Environmental Working Group (EWG) offers the following tips on how to pick "cleaner" food:

Always purchase organic fruits, vegetables and other products whenever possible.

USDA organic labels for meat, poultry eggs, milk and cheese as well butter and honey are recommended.

Avoid processed foods that are labeled "natural" or "no added ingredients."

Check ingredient lists carefully. If an ingredient doesn't appear on the list, it could be added to the product during processing.

Frozen and canned meats should be preferred to fresh. Many frozen and canned foods contain less nutrients, like high fructose Corn Syrup.

How To

Organic foods are healthier and more nutritious.

Organic foods are grown without the use chemical pesticides or synthetic fertilisers. They are grown under natural conditions without artificial inputs such as fungicides, insecticides, herbicides, hormones, antibiotics, or genetic engineering. Cover crops, crop rotation, crop rotation, composting animal manure as well as recycling wastewater are all organic farming practices.

The USDA National Organic Program (NOP) was established in 2002 to regulate the production, handling, processing, labelling, sale, and distribution of organic products sold in the United States. NOP regulations ensure organic agricultural products conform to the Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act. In addition, the NOP rules mandate that organic products must be free from prohibited substances, including pesticide residues, veterinary drugs, growth hormones, genetically modified organisms, irradiation, sewage sludge, industrial waste, and heavy metals.

Two types of certification programs are available in the United States for producers who wish to have their products labeled organic. One is for farmers and ranchers; one is for manufacturers. Both programs require audits of operations each year to ensure that they are meeting strict standards. Many certifying agents offer this service, including CCOF Certified Organic Farmers & Ranchers (QA International), American Grassfed Association, and Quality Assurance International. These three organizations provide third party verification of farms following strict guidelines on environmental stewardship. labour practices, and animal care.

The USDA's Economic Research Service estimates that organic agriculture was responsible for $4.7 billion of 2013 sales. The retail spending on organic products accounted for nearly $1.5 billion in 2013, a 23 percent increase over 2009. The number of grocery stores that sold organic products increased 12 percent over the same period. Spending on organic produce directly increased by 29.9%, while meat, poultry eggs, and seafood spending grew only by 1%.

While organic food costs more, consumers say its quality justifies the added expense. According to a 2015 survey conducted by Consumer Reports, 88 percent of respondents said they would pay more for organic food if it meant higher nutritional value. Health Affairs also reported that organic food intake is associated with fewer health problems, such as obesity, diabetes and heart disease.

While there is no evidence that organic food can prevent or treat any diseases, there are some studies suggesting that eating them may improve your overall health by reducing your exposure to pesticides and other contaminants. According to a 2010 review of 31 studies, organically raised beef showed significantly lower levels in toxic chemicals and parasites than conventionally produced beef. A separate analysis of 11 publications from 2012 produced similar results.

A 2014 report from the Environmental Working Group looked at data from the Department of Agriculture's Agricultural Marketing Resource Center and found that the incidence of foodborne illness caused by E. coli, salmonella, listeria monocytogenes, campylobacter, and verotoxin-producing E. coli O157:H7 decreased when comparing organic to non-organic chicken, pork, beef, lamb, milk, and cheese. The group also noted that the incidence of human illnesses due to E. coli O157 declined among children and adults after 2006, when the USDA started requiring more stringent organic standards for animals raised for consumption.
