Frequently Asked Questions

What should I look out for when buying organic products?

USDA-certified organic labels are recommended. This certification means that the product is certified organic by USDA. Look out for the USDA Organic seal on boxes, cartons cans and jars.

When purchasing meat, ensure it is 100% organic. Ruminants are cattle that chew their cud. Ruminant cattle are divided into four stomach compartments, the rumen and reticulum as well as the omasum and abmasum. All parts of an animal must be organically fed if the cow is going to be labelled '100% organic.'

When buying chicken, make sure it comes only from chickens fed 100% organic feed and never given antibiotics. Chickens can eat both animal and plant food. Omnivorous chickens possess a digestive tract made up of a crop.

It is important to ensure that dairy products are from cows that were fed 100% organic feed. Like ruminants, dairy cattle have four stomachs. The fourth stomach, or the udder is where you get milk.

You should always check the label before purchasing any other livestock. This will let you know what percentage of the diet was given to the animals. One example is pork that may be labeled '95% Organic'. This means that 95 percent came from organic sources.

What's the difference between organic foods and inorganic food?

Organic food is made without chemical fertilizers or pesticides. Organic farming practices contribute to soil health, water purity, and animal welfare.

Inorganic foods are grown with pesticides, chemical fertilizers, and sewage sludge. Irradiated foods are treated with radiation; genetically modified organisms (GMO) are created through biological engineering techniques.

The term "natural" is often used interchangeably with "organic." Natural does not always mean organic. Products labelled "natural", however, may contain synthetic chemicals.

Organic produce is typically more nutritious than conventional produce because the soil contains fewer harmful chemicals and pesticides. In addition, organic farmers do not use artificial fertilizers, hormones, antibiotics, or pesticides.

How can I tell if my produce has been certified organic?

These three labels can help you make sure you're buying organic produce.

USDA Organic Certified – Produced by USDA and certified as 100% organic.

Certified Naturally Grown: Produce that has been grown in accordance with organic practices, but has yet to receive certification from USDA.

Pastured/Free range - These are animals that live outside and graze freely on grasses and herbs.

These labels indicate that the product meets specific criteria, which include:

  • No synthetic pesticides and fertilizers
  • There are no genetically modified organisms
  • Animals are never given antibiotics
  • Animals are never given hormones.
  • There are no growth-promoting drugs
  • No feed additives
  • No artificial ingredients
  • No irradiation
  • There's no sewage waste sludge
  • No GMOs
  • There have never been any antibiotics given.
  • No hormones ever given
  • There are no growth-promoting drugs
  • No feed additives
  • No artificial ingredients
  • No sewage waste (if it's non-GMO).
  • No irradiation

Are organic foods better?

According to the Environmental Working Group, organic vegetables and fruits had half the amount of pesticides as non-organic. Organic strawberries contained four times more pesticides that their conventional counterparts, and organic apples contained eight percent less.

Another study suggests that organic food can reduce exposure to toxic metals such as lead and mercury. One study found that organic meats had 33 percent less lead in children than the levels of those who did not eat them. Another study concluded that pregnant women should avoid consuming conventional fish due to high levels of mercury.

Organic food seems to be safer than the non-organic. Experts recommend that fresh produce and vegetables be used whenever possible to reduce your chances of developing cancer.

What are the benefits of organic farming?

Organic farming is a way for farmers to grow food naturally without the use chemicals. Farmers don't have worry about whether harmful pesticides are affecting their crops or animals.

Organic farming also offers more natural fertilizers. These fertilizers promote healthy plants and decrease the amount of chemicals used.

Organic farming can also be environmentally friendly. Organic farming is also environmentally friendly. Farmers often use composting to recycle nutrients back into their soil. This reduces pollution and conserves valuable resources.

As well as helping the environment, organic farming increases crop yields. This is due to the fact that organic farming uses much less water during growth season.

Organic farming methods can also result in higher prices for farmers' produce. People who are more conscious of the dangers of chemical fertilizers and pesticides will eat healthier food.

This raises the demand to produce organic food products. Organic farming is growing in popularity.

Why should I go organic?

There have been many health problems linked to conventional farming, including allergies, asthma, diabetes, obesity, cancer, birth defects and hormone imbalances. When buying food, you must make wise choices.

Here are some tips from the Environmental Working Group (EWG).

When possible, buy organic fruits and veggies

USDA organic labels should be used on meat, poultry and eggs as well as milk, cheese, yogurt, butter, honey, and other dairy products.

Avoid processed foods labelled "natural"/ "no additives."

Carefully review ingredient lists. If an ingredient doesn't appear on the list, it could be added to the product during processing.

You should choose fresh meats rather than frozen or canned. Cans and frozen foods are often less nutritious than fresh meats, such as high fructose corn syrup.

What is inorganic food?

Organic food is made without pesticides or artificial fertilizers. These chemicals could cause health problems for those who eat inorganic food.

Organic food is organically grown without the use of harmful chemicals such as pesticides or herbicides. These chemicals can harm humans and animals.

Inorganic food can include meat, fish eggs, buttermilk cheese, buttermilk, yogurt, honey grains, vegetables, fruits spices, and herbs.

The way that an agricultural product is grown organically is what the term means. Organic farming uses natural methods to grow crops. Conventional farming uses pesticides and synthetic fertilizers.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) must set strict guidelines for organic foods. The National Organic Program Standards state that organic food must be freed from banned substances like antibiotics, growthhormones, genetically altered organisms (GMOs) and industrial solvents. Organic food must not contain toxic chemicals, petroleum-based fertilizers or sewage sludges.

Statistics

  • As for organic meat, regulations require that animals be raised in living conditions that accommodate their natural behaviours (like the ability to graze on pasture), fed 100% organic feed and forage, and not administered antibiotics or hormones. (usda.gov)
  • Popular clothing brands, like Patagonia, are labelled as organic by using 100 percent organic cotton for many of their styles. (en.wikipedia.org)
  • Nutrients like omega-3 fatty acids were up to 50 percent higher in organic meats and milk than in conventionally raised products.[3] (en.wikipedia.org)
  • Brands participating in this challenge are committed to using 100 percent sustainable cotton by 2025.[5] (en.wikipedia.org)

How To

What happens to your body when you switch to organic products?

Organic products are grown without pesticides, synthetic fertilizers, hormones, antibiotics, or genetic manipulation. They come only from natural sources of water and free-range animals. Organic means that they are free from chemicals and additives. This product was naturally produced and contains no harmful chemicals.

Natural refers to the way food was grown. It is usually used to describe foods that haven't been processed into their final form (e.g., fruits). Natural foods are often fresher because they're not subject to heat radiation, chemical preservatives or any other treatment. Some people don't believe that natural means healthy. Experts agree that organic and conventional foods are very similar. Both types of food have been tested for safety and quality. Organic produce contains fewer pesticide and other pollutants than conventionally-grown produce.

In general, most grocery stores now offer organic options. If you are looking for organic meat, poultry and eggs, check with your local grocery store. Some companies only sell organic products, while others offer separate sections. USDA Certified Organic and Non-GMO Project Verified are some of the options.

These items should be avoided if you're pregnant or breastfeeding. Pesticides are known to affect unborn babies and infants.
