Frequently Asked Questions

What's the difference?

Organic food is free from pesticides, chemical fertilizers and sewage sludge. It can also be grown without irradiation or genetic modification. Organic farming practices are good for soil health, water quality, animal welfare, and the environment.

Inorganic foods are grown with pesticides, chemical fertilizers, and sewage sludge. Radiation is used to treat irradiated food; biological engineering techniques are used to create genetically modified organisms (GMO).

The term "natural", often used interchangeably to mean "organic," is frequently used. Natural does not necessarily have to mean organic. Natural products can also be labeled with synthetic ingredients.

Organic produce is typically more nutritious than conventional produce because the soil contains fewer harmful chemicals and pesticides. Organic farmers don't use any artificial fertilizers, hormones or antibiotics.

Is organic meat better?

If you've been paying attention for any time, you probably already know the answer to this question. Here's the problem: Organic food is becoming more sought-after, while traditional food continues to decline in popularity.

Organic foods are more appealing because they are healthier. Organic products are not only safer for our health but also reduce pollution and waste.

However, this coin has two sides. Organic produce is more difficult to grow and takes more resources. Organic food is more expensive than non-organic.

Organic meats are typically higher priced than conventionally raised animals. But there are ways to cut costs without sacrificing quality.

Buy locally to save money. Buy locally grown vegetables and fruits to help keep prices low. Farmers receive incentives to grow healthier crops.

A great way to save money is to search for deals. You may be able to get discounts when you buy organics.

You can also save money by eating less meat. Feeding livestock can be very expensive.

While there are many reasons organic food is better for our bodies as well as the planet, we must not forget the cost.

Why should I buy organic?

Conventional agriculture has been linked to several health problems, including asthma, allergies, obesity, diabetes, cancer, birth defects, hormone imbalances, and other diseases. You must make healthy choices when buying food.

The Environmental Working Group offers these tips:

Buy organic fruits and vegetables whenever possible.

Look for USDA organic labels on meat, poultry, eggs, milk, cheese, yogurt, butter, and honey.

Avoid processed foods labeled as "natural" or "no additives."

Carefully review ingredient lists. It is possible to add an ingredient during processing if it isn't already listed.

Fresh meats are better than canned or frozen. Foods that are frozen or canned often have less nutritionally-rich ingredients, such as high fructosecorn syrup.

Are organic foods good for your health?

Even though organic foods might not be for everyone, there are some health benefits. However, regular consumption of organic foods can have health benefits.

Organic food is produced without artificial fertilizers, pesticides, herbicides, fungicides, hormones, antibiotics, or genetic engineering. Organic produce is not grown with harmful chemicals that could pose a risk to human health.

The use of additives in the processing process is also less common. Organic products are more nutritious than those made from non-organic ingredients.

Studies have shown organic foods have more nutrients and antioxidants that conventionally grown fruits, vegetables.

Even though organic farming methods can be more costly than conventional farming methods they are often more productive. Organic farming encourages soil fertility and biodiversity.

This helps conserve water resources and protects against erosion. Organic farms require less fuel and energy because they don't contain toxic chemicals.

Many people are concerned that organic food is more expensive than regular foods. However, prices can vary depending upon where you live. For example, organic apples tend to be more expensive than traditional apples.

However, organic fruit is more affordable if you compare the price of a basket of both types.

So should you go organic?

It all depends on who you are. It doesn't matter if organic food isn't for you.

Organic food is available if you are a fan of good food. And since most commercial growers use chemical fertilizers, pesticides, and genetically modified organisms (GMOs), organic foods are safer for consumers.

Organic agriculture preserves our environment by conserving natural resource and encouraging biodiversity.

What are the things to look for when purchasing organic products?

USDA-certified organic labels are recommended. This seal signifies that the product meets specific USDA standards. On packages, boxes, cartons or cans, look out for the USDA Organic seal.

When shopping for meat ensure it comes only from cows that are fed 100% organic feed. Cattle are ruminants, which means they chew the cud. Ruminant cattle can be found with four stomach compartments: the rumen, the reticulum, omasum, abomasum and omasum. If a cow is to be labeled organically, all parts must be organically fed.

Buy chicken from only organic chickens that have been fed 100% organic food and are not given antibiotics. Chickens can eat both animal and plant food. Omnivorous chickens have a digestive system that includes a crop (proventriculus), gizzard and small intestine.

Buy only dairy products from cows that have been fed organically grown feed. Dairy cows have four stomach compartments, just like ruminants. The fourth stomach compartment--the cow's udder--is where milk is produced.

When purchasing other types of livestock, check the label to see what percentage of the diet the animals were fed. A label for pork might say "95% organic", which means that 95% of the feed used by the pork came from organic sources.

What are the benefits of organic fruits?

Organic foods do not use pesticides, artificial fertilizers, hormones or antibiotics. They also contain more nutrients, such as vitamins A, C, E, and K, plus omega-3 fatty acids. These healthy ingredients make organic food better for our bodies and the planet.

Organic foods are produced using sustainable agricultural practices that protect soil quality and promote biological diversity. They are produced without harmful chemicals, irradiation, or sewage sludge.

Most people associate organics with fruits, but organic products also include dairy, meat and poultry, as well as baked goods, personal care items, pet food and household cleaning supplies.

The USDA defines organic as crops grown in accordance with strict federal regulations. This means that farmers can't use non-organic methods of growing these foods. However, they may use approved natural pest control methods, such as crop rotation and cover cropping, and animal feed made from organic materials.

A farmer must also adhere to guidelines about how much fertilizer or pesticide he applies during the growing season. Also, he must rotate his fields between different crops. GMOs, synthetic insecicides, artificial growth hormones or synthetic fertilizers can't be used by farmers.

Fruits and vegetables labelled "100% organic" meet all the requirements above. Some farms don't label their products 100% organic, as it could confuse consumers. Instead, they will say that their product is "made with organic components". "

What is organic?

Organic meat means real food, grown without artificial fertilizers or pesticides. Organic meat is also a guarantee that the animals weren’t fed any genetically altered feed. This makes it safe for human consumption because there aren't any harmful chemicals in the meat.

Organic meats are better for the environment. Eating organic foods helps reduce pollution in the environment, such as rivers and lakes. Organic farmers are less likely to use toxic chemicals to kill birds or insects. This helps protect wildlife.

Locally purchasing organic meats is the best way to make sure you are eating healthy and organic meats. Local buying helps to keep money in the community, rather than moving out of state. Local businesses often pass down savings to customers when they shop locally. Shopping locally keeps American jobs in America, rather than sending them abroad.

How To

How to buy organic meat even on a tight budget

This post will share some tips and tricks to help you buy organic meat without breaking the bank.

I'll give you some tips about where to find organic meats at a low price and how much it costs per pound. This will teach you how to get the most out of your purchase.

You don't need to spend a lot of money to eat healthily. Sometimes it takes creativity to save money and eat well. Here are my suggestions for ways to cut food costs while still enjoying the benefits of organic meat.

  1. Wholesale clubs - Sams Club, Costco, and Sams Club offer great deals on bulk foods like chicken breasts. If you are fortunate enough to live near one, you may be able get discounts up to 50 lbs on large quantities. This way you won't end up with any leftover meat. It's also possible to freeze meat purchased in bulk so that it lasts longer.
  2. Shopping online is easy - There are tons of websites that sell meat at reduced prices. For example, Amazon has a weekly deal called Prime Pantry, which includes free shipping on orders over $35. They offer discounts on beef roasts, ground beef, lamb steaks, and pork loins. It's simple to visit their website to view the latest offerings at different times.
  3. Locate a farmer in your area. Local farmers are usually cheaper than big box retailers as they don’t pay high stocking fees. Because they know exactly the diets and drinks of their animals, local farmers can provide a better understanding of what's inside.
  4. Look out for cuts that are the leanest. It's generally less expensive to cook lean meat than fatty. Look for the tiniest cuts. The most popular cuts are flank steak, sirloin steak and tenderloin roast. These cuts have high protein and low fat.
  5. Try new recipes. Cooking with new ingredients is one of the best ways to cut your grocery bills. You'll be surprised at how many delicious dishes can you create using fresh tomatoes.
  6. Make your leftovers creative - You can make sandwiches, soups, casseroles, and other dishes with leftover meat or poultry. Leftover meat is perfect for making quick lunches or dinners.

That's it! That's my list of tips on how to afford organic meat even though you're on a budget. Do you have other tips? What other tips do you have for me?
