Frequently Asked Questions

Are organic foods healthier?

According to the Environmental Working Group's latest report on pesticide residues in foods, organic fruits and vegetables had nearly half the level of pesticides compared with non-organic versions. Organic apples had eight times less pesticides than nonorganic apples. However, organic strawberries had four times the amount of pesticides as their conventional counterparts.

Another study suggests that organic food can reduce exposure to toxic metals such as lead and mercury. For example, one study showed that children who ate organic meat had 33 percent lower blood lead levels than those who didn't consume organic meats. A second study found that conventional fish should be avoided by pregnant women due to the high levels of mercury.

Organic food seems to be safer than the non-organic. Experts recommend eating fresh fruits and veggies whenever possible to reduce the chance of developing cancer.

What is inorganic foods?

Organic food is produced without the use of artificial fertilizers and pesticides. These chemicals may be harmful to your health and can also be found in non-organic foods.

Organic food is grown naturally without harmful substances such as chemical fertilizers, pesticides, herbicides, or fungicides. These chemicals can cause harm to animals and humans.

Inorganic foods are meats, fishes, eggs, buttermilk, cheese, yogurt and honey as well as vegetables, fruits and spices.

Organic refers to how an agricultural product was grown. Organic farming is based on natural methods, soil amendments, and crop growth. Conventional farming uses pesticides, fertilizers, and chemicals.

Foods labeled as organic must meet strict guidelines by the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA). According to the National Organic Program Standards, all certified organic food must be free from prohibited materials such as antibiotics, growth hormones, genetically modified organisms (GMOs), and industrial solvents. Organic food must not contain toxic chemicals, petroleum-based fertilizers or sewage sludges.

What are organic beauty products?

Organic Beauty Products do not contain synthetic chemicals like petroleum, parabens or phenoxyethanol. They are made from natural ingredients and don't contain artificial preservatives. These ingredients are commonly found in conventional beauty products like cosmetics, shampoos, and perfumes.

Organic beauty products can also be made without animal testing, and they do not contain any genetically altered organisms (GMO).

The USDA defines organic production as "a system of production which fosters the cycle of resources" and it has been used since decades to refer to foods grown without pesticides.

There has been a rise in demand for ecofriendly beauty products over the years due to the negative effects of chemical chemicals on our skin.

These include cancer, allergies and skin irritation.

Organic beauty businesses are committed to providing safe, healthy products that consumers can use while protecting the environment.

What is the difference between organic and inorganic foods?

Organic food is made without chemical fertilizers or pesticides. Organic farming practices support soil health, water quality, and animal welfare.

Inorganic foods are produced using chemical fertilizers, pesticides, and sewage effluent. Radiation is used to treat irradiated food; biological engineering techniques are used to create genetically modified organisms (GMO).

"Natural" is sometimes used interchangeably in the context of "organic." But, "natural" does not necessarily refer to organic. Natural products can also be labeled with synthetic ingredients.

Organic produce is usually more nutritious that conventional produce. This is because organic soil contains fewer toxic chemicals and pesticides. In addition, organic farmers do not use artificial fertilizers, hormones, antibiotics, or pesticides.

What are organic foods?

Organic produce can be grown without the use of pesticides or synthetic fertilizers. There are no growth hormones used and animal testing is not performed. These crops can grow naturally so that farmers don't have to use pesticides or weed control.

Organic farming practices also maintain soil quality by reducing erosion and conserving water resources. Organic foods are healthier than conventional foods because they have more nutrients. Organic products have a higher fiber content and are lower in calories and fat than conventionally manufactured ones.

What is organic?

Organic meat means real food, grown without artificial fertilizers or pesticides. This also means that animals weren't given any genetically modified feed. The meat is safe to consume because it contains no harmful chemicals.

Organic meats are better for the environment. Organic foods reduce pollution in rivers, lakes and landfills. We can also help wildlife by eating organic foods. Organic farmers do not often use toxic chemicals that can kill birds or insects.

It is best to buy organic meats locally as much as possible. Buying local helps keep more money circulating within the community rather than going out of state. Local businesses often pass savings on to customers who shop locally. Shopping locally helps to keep American workers employed, as opposed to sending them overseas.

What are the things to look for when purchasing organic products?

Look for USDA-certified organic labels. This certification means that the product is certified organic by USDA. On packages, boxes, cartons or cans, look out for the USDA Organic seal.

When shopping for meat, ensure it comes from cows fed 100% organic feed. Cattle are ruminants. They eat the whole animal. Ruminant cattle have four stomach areas: rumen (reticulum), omasum (omasum), and abomasum. To be labeled '100% organic, all animal parts must be organically nourished.

Chicken should be only purchased from chickens raised on organic feed, and not given antibiotics. Omnivore chickens eat both animals and plants. The digestive tract of an omnivorous chicken is composed of a crop and proventriculus, gizzard as well as small intestine, large intestinale, and anus.

Buy dairy products that are 100% organically produced. Just like ruminants have four stomachs, dairy cows have four. Milk comes from the fourth stomach compartment--the udder.

To find out the percent of the feed the animals received when you purchase other types livestock, be sure to read the labels. Pork may be labeled "95% Organic" which means that 95 percent of its feed was organic.

Statistics

  • Nutrients like omega-3 fatty acids were up to 50 percent higher in organic meats and milk than in conventionally raised products.[3] (en.wikipedia.org)
  • Brands participating in this challenge are committed to using 100 percent sustainable cotton by 2025.[5] (en.wikipedia.org)
  • As for organic meat, regulations require that animals be raised in living conditions that accommodate their natural behaviours (like the ability to graze on pasture), fed 100% organic feed and forage, and not administered antibiotics or hormones. (usda.gov)

How To

What happens to your body if you switch to organic products

Organic products do not contain synthetic fertilizers or hormones. They are derived from clean water and animals that have been free to roam. The term "organic", which means they don't contain additives or chemicals, refers to their non-containing any. This product was naturally produced and contains no harmful chemicals.

The term "natural" refers how food is grown. It's used to describe foods that have not been altered into their final form (e.g. fruits). Natural foods are often fresher than others because they haven't been treated with heat, radiation, or chemical preservatives. However, some people believe natural doesn't necessarily mean healthy. Experts say that there aren't many differences between organic and conventional food. Both types are tested for safety as well as quality. Organic produce is less likely to contain pesticide residues and pollutants than conventionally grown produce.

Most grocery stores offer organic options. If you are looking for organic meat, poultry and eggs, check with your local grocery store. Some companies only sell organic products. Others have separate sections. You should look for USDA Certified Organic, Non GMO Project Verified (Biodynamic Association Certified), Rainforest Alliance Certified, and other certifications.

If you are pregnant, or nursing, these products should not be eaten. Unborn babies and infants can be exposed to pesticides.
