Frequently Asked Questions

What are organic foods?

Organic produce is grown without pesticides, synthetic fertilizers, sewage sludge, irradiation, genetic engineering, or confinement feeding. There are no growth hormones used and animal testing is not performed. These crops can be grown naturally by farmers, and they don't need to be treated with chemicals to control pests or weeds.

Organic farming practices can also preserve soil quality by reducing erosion, and conserving water resources. Organic foods are healthier than conventional foods because they have more nutrients. Organic products have a higher fiber content and are lower in calories and fat than conventionally manufactured ones.

What are organic fruits and vegetables?

Organic food does not contain pesticides or synthetic fertilizers. Organic foods contain more nutrients like vitamins A, C and E, as well as omega-3 fatty oils. These nutritious ingredients make organic foods better for our bodies, and for the planet.

Organic foods are made using sustainable agricultural practices, which protect soil quality and promote biodiversity. They are made without the use of harmful chemicals, irradiation or sewage waste.

Although organics are most commonly associated with produce, organics can also be found in dairy, meats, poultry, eggs and baked goods.

The USDA defines organic as crops grown in accordance with strict federal regulations. These foods cannot be grown by farmers using conventional methods. However, they can use approved natural methods to control pests, like crop rotation and cover crops, or animal feed made of organic materials.

Further, the farmer must be careful about the amount of pesticide and fertilizer he uses in the growing season. GMOs, artificial growthhormones, synthetic insecticides, and synthetic fertilizers cannot be used by farmers.

Vegetables and fruits labeled as "100% organic" fulfill all of the requirements. However, some farms won't claim that their products are 100% organic. This would confuse the consumers. Instead, they will say that their product is "made with organic components". "

How do I know if my produce is organic?

If you want to make sure that you are buying organic produce, look for these three labels:

USDA Organic Certified – Produced by USDA and certified as 100% organic.

Certified Naturally Grown: Produce that has been grown in accordance with organic practices, but has yet to receive certification from USDA.

Pastured/Free-range - Made from animals that graze on grass and herbs outdoors.

These labels are used to indicate that the product meets specified criteria.

  • No synthetic pesticides and fertilizers
  • No genetically altered organisms
  • Animals are not given antibiotics.
  • Animals never receive hormones
  • No growth-promoting drug
  • No feed additives
  • No artificial ingredients
  • No irradiation
  • No sewage sludge
  • No GMOs
  • No antibiotics ever given
  • No hormones ever given
  • No growth-promoting medications
  • No feed additives
  • No artificial ingredients
  • No sewage sludge (if it's a non-GMO)
  • No irradiation

What are some things I should look out for when purchasing organic goods?

Look for USDA-certified organic labels. This seal signifies that the product meets specific USDA standards. Look for the "USDA Organic" seal on packages, boxes, cartons, cans, and jars.

When you shop for meat, ensure that it comes from cows who are fed organic feed. Cattle are ruminants. They eat the whole animal. Ruminant cattle can be found with four stomach compartments: the rumen, the reticulum, omasum, abomasum and omasum. If the cow is to be labeled "100% organic", all of its parts must have been organically fed.

When buying chicken, make sure it comes only from chickens fed 100% organic feed and never given antibiotics. Omnivore chickens can eat both plants as well as animals. Omnivorous chickens have a digestive tract composed of a crop, proventriculus, gizzard, small intestine, large intestine, and anus.

Buy only dairy products from cows that have been fed organically grown feed. Dairy cows have four stomach compartments, just like ruminants. The fourth stomach compartment--the cow's udder--is where milk is produced.

You should always check the label before purchasing any other livestock. This will let you know what percentage of the diet was given to the animals. For example, pork may be marked "95% organic" to indicate that 95 percent of the pork's feed is organic.

Why should I choose organic?

Many health issues have been linked to conventional agriculture, including obesity, diabetes and cancer. Healthy choices must be made when purchasing food.

The Environmental Working Group (EWG), offers these tips to help you choose "cleaner" foods:

When possible, buy organic fruits and veggies

USDA organic labels for meat, poultry eggs, milk and cheese as well butter and honey are recommended.

Avoid processed foods labelled "natural"/ "no additives."

Make sure you read through all the ingredients. If an ingredient doesn't appear on the list, it could be added to the product during processing.

It is better to eat fresh meats than canned or frozen. Foods that are frozen or canned often have less nutritionally-rich ingredients, such as high fructosecorn syrup.

Are organic foods better?

The Environmental Working Group's most recent report on pesticide residues found in food shows that organic fruits and veggies had almost half the pesticide content of non-organic. Organic apples had eight times less pesticides than nonorganic apples. However, organic strawberries had four times the amount of pesticides as their conventional counterparts.

Research has also suggested that organic food may reduce mercury and lead exposure. For example, one study showed that children who ate organic meat had 33 percent lower blood lead levels than those who didn't consume organic meats. Another study concluded that pregnant mothers should avoid eating conventional fish because of the high levels mercury.

Organic food tends to be healthier than nonorganic. Experts recommend eating fresh fruits and veggies whenever possible to reduce the chance of developing cancer.

How To

What happens to your body when you switch to organic products?

Organic products can be grown without synthetic fertilizers, hormones or antibiotics. They come only from natural sources of water and free-range animals. Organic means that they are free from chemicals and additives. This product was created by nature, and therefore does not contain harmful substances.

The term "natural" refers how food is grown. It's used to describe foods that have not been altered into their final form (e.g. fruits). Natural foods are often fresher than others because they haven't been treated with heat, radiation, or chemical preservatives. Some people think natural does not necessarily mean healthy. Many experts say there isn't much difference between conventional and organic foods. Both types can be tested for safety and quality. Organic produce is less likely to contain pesticide residues and pollutants than conventionally grown produce.

Most grocery shops now carry organic options. For organic meats, poultry, eggs and seafood, you should check with your local supermarket. Some companies only sell organic products, while others offer separate sections. Look for USDA Certified Organic, Non-GMO Project Verified, Biodynamic Association Certified, Rainforest Alliance Certified, etc.

These items should be avoided if you're pregnant or breastfeeding. Pesticides have been shown to harm infants and unborn babies.
