Frequently Asked Questions
How can you tell if food is organic?
Fresh ingredients are what chefs value the most. We feel better when our food is good.
This is true for food as well. We can identify exactly where and how organic foods were grown when we purchase them. It was not treated with harmful chemicals.
Organic food does not contain synthetic pesticides, fertilers, hormones or antibiotics. Organic farmers aren't allowed to use these substances.
However, organic farming is not an easy task. You have many options to safely grow them.
Many people refer to organic agriculture as sustainable agriculture. This means that while it uses fewer resources than conventional methods, it provides the necessary nutrients to sustain life.
Organic farming techniques include crop rotation and cover cropping. These techniques prevent soil erosion while improving water quality.
They also reduce chemical contamination of waterways. Local farms can be found in cities that raise organic produce.
There are two types certified programs for organic products. The USDA National Organic Program certifies one, while independent certifying agencies certification the other. Both require strict conformity to organic standards.
USDA seals or O Seals can be applied to organic products. This symbol indicates that the product meets federal requirements.
What are the most popular organic products?
Today organic food is the fastest-growing sector. But even though we've come a long way from our roots, there is still much room for growth.
Organic products will be the future. They are safer and more cost-effective for consumers.
They are also generally more expensive. That's why we created the Organic Food Index. We wanted to see which foods are most in demand today and how these trends are changing.
The results show that organic food is becoming increasingly popular. Between 2011 & 2012, almost half of Americans purchased organic food.
According to USDA, organic production grew by 10% last year. Organic food now accounts for 9% of U.S. agricultural output.
Organic food is growing in popularity but is still expensive. The average retail price for organic food is almost twice that of conventional foods, according to the Organic Trade Association (OTA).
However, organic food is growing more quickly than any other part of the food market. If you look closely at the data, it will be apparent that organic food consumption has steadily increased since 2009.
According to OTA however, the volume in supermarkets of organic products grew by 14% from 2010 to 2011.
This is because of consumer demand for healthier products, which explains the rise in organic food sales across all age categories.
However, the younger generation is leading the charge in choosing organic food. Millennials are twice as likely than baby boomers to buy organic foods. And young adults under 35 years old account for 25% of all organic food purchases.
What are the things to look for when purchasing organic products?
Look for USDA-certified organic labels. This seal signifies that the product meets specific USDA standards. On packages, boxes, cartons or cans, look out for the USDA Organic seal.
When you shop for meat, ensure that it comes from cows who are fed organic feed. Cattle are ruminants which means that they chew the cud. Ruminant cattle are divided into four stomach compartments, the rumen and reticulum as well as the omasum and abmasum. If the cow is to be labeled "100% organic", all of its parts must have been organically fed.
Chicken should be only purchased from chickens raised on organic feed, and not given antibiotics. Chickens can eat both animal and plant food. The digestive tract of an omnivorous chicken is composed of a crop and proventriculus, gizzard as well as small intestine, large intestinale, and anus.
You should ensure you only buy dairy products made from milk that has been produced by cows who have been fed 100% organically grown food. Like ruminants and dairy cows, they have four stomach compartments. Milk comes from the fourth stomach compartment--the udder.
To find out the percent of the feed the animals received when you purchase other types livestock, be sure to read the labels. For example, pork may be marked "95% organic" to indicate that 95 percent of the pork's feed is organic.

How To
5 Reasons to buy organic products
Organic food is grown without synthetic fertilizers and pesticides. They do not contain genetically modified organisms (GMOs), or radioactive ingredients. They are not made with sewage sludge, industrial solvents, or any other chemical substances. During its growth, the food's natural environment remains unaffected by contamination. It is free of artificial preservatives and additives. It does not contain hormones or antibiotics. In addition, they are produced under conditions that allow them to retain their nutritional value and freshness for longer periods.
- Health benefits. Nonorganic produce is more chemically-laden than organic. It's therefore less likely that it will cause allergies and other sensitivities. You also consume fewer toxic substances and carcinogens.
- Eco-friendliness. Organically grown produce doesn't require synthetic fertilizer or pesticides. Organic farms are located far from cities where there is a lot of pollution, because they require so much energy to grow. This reduces air pollution.
- Sustainability. Organic farming relies on soil fertility, rather than chemical fertilisers. This results in healthier soils and higher levels organic matter. The rotation of crops and the letting of land fallow can improve soil health. Strong immune systems are developed when farm animals only eat grasses and grains that have not been treated with hormones or antibiotics.
- Taste. The taste of conventional fruits and veggies is often bland. This is because they are picked at the peak of ripeness. They then get shipped long distances to their destination. Organic produce tastes richer and sweeter because it was harvested while still unripe.
- Nutrition. Many conventional processed foods contain harmful substances like BPA and GMOs. If you want to avoid these, stick to whole foods such as meat, eggs, fish, nuts, seeds, beans, fruit, veggies, and herbs.
