Organic food sales have increased significantly in recent years. The US market value of organic foods was $43Billion in 2012, up from $21B in 2007.


What should I be looking out for when shopping organic products

USDA-certified organic labels are desirable. This seal signifies that the product meets specific USDA standards. On all packages, boxes and cartons, look for the USDA Organic seal.

When you shop for meat, ensure that it comes from cows who are fed organic feed. Cattle are ruminants, which means they chew the cud. Ruminant cattle have four stomach compartments: rumen, reticulum, omasum, and abomasum. Organic feeding must be done on all organs of the animal in order to get the cow labelled organic 100 percent.

You should only purchase chicken that has been raised organically. It must not have ever been treated with antibiotics. Omnivore chickens eat both animals and plants. The digestive tract of an omnivorous chicken is composed of a crop and proventriculus, gizzard as well as small intestine, large intestinale, and anus.

When buying dairy products, ensure they come from cows fed 100% organically grown feed. Just like ruminants, dairy cows also have four stomachs. The fourth stomach, or the udder is where you get milk.

  1. Shop at wholesale clubs - Sams Club or Costco are great places to buy bulk foods such as chicken breasts and pork chops. If you are fortunate enough to live near one, you may be able get discounts up to 50 lbs on large quantities. This ensures that meat is not wasted. You can also freeze the meat if you buy it bulk.
  2. Shopping online is easy - There are tons of websites that sell meat at reduced prices. Amazon offers Prime Pantry weekly deals, including free shipping for orders above $35 They offer discounts on beef roasts, ground beef, lamb steaks, and pork loins. It is easy to browse their website and check out what is on offer at different times.
  3. Local farmers often charge less than big box retailers due to the fact that they don't have large overheads for stocking their shelves. Local farmers also know exactly what their animals have eaten and drank so they can determine what's in their bodies.
  4. Choose lean cuts of meat - It is usually cheaper to cook lean meat than fatty. You should always look for the best cuts. The most popular are sirloin or flank steak, tenderloin roasts, top round steak, and top roast steak. These cuts are very low in fat and high in protein.
