Frequently Asked Questions
What is the difference in organic and non-organic foods?
Organic food is free from pesticides, chemical fertilizers and sewage sludge. It can also be grown without irradiation or genetic modification. Organic farming practices contribute to soil health, water purity, and animal welfare.
Inorganic foods are produced using chemical fertilizers, pesticides, and sewage effluent. Radiated foods are those that have been exposed to radiation. Genetically modified organisms, or GMOs, are created using biological engineering techniques.
The term "natural" is often used interchangeably with "organic." However, natural does not necessarily mean organic. There are also products labelled "natural" which may contain synthetic ingredients.
Because organic produce contains fewer harmful chemicals, pesticides, and fertilizers than conventional produce it is more nutritious. Organic farmers don't use any artificial fertilizers, hormones or antibiotics.
What does it mean to be an organic food producer?
Organic food producers produce organic foods that are free from pesticides and other chemical fertilizers. These foods include fruits, vegetables and dairy products.
Organic food production happens on farms where crops have been naturally nurtured. This includes soil preparation and pest control as well as crop rotation.
USDA (United States Department of Agriculture), has strict requirements for agricultural products to be certified organic.
These guidelines will ensure that consumers have safe, healthy, and nutritious food.
The benefits of eating organic range from lower levels of pesticide residues and heavy metal contamination to higher nutrient content and better flavour.
Products certified organic by the USDA must bear the label "USDA Certified Organic" seal.
This certification signifies that the product meets all standards set by the National Organic Program.
Organic food helps us eat healthier and also protects the environment.
Organic farming techniques conserve water and land. In addition, organic methods reduce greenhouse gas emissions, which cause climate change.
Organic agriculture is more sustainable and uses less chemicals.
It also improves air quality because harmful gases like ammonia and nitrates are less likely to build up in the atmosphere.
There are many types of organic farming, including conventional, regenerative, agroecological, and permaculture.
Conventional farming uses synthetic inputs such pesticides and fertilizers.
Regenerative farming involves compost, cover crops, and green manures to improve soil health. It encourages biodiversity.
Agroecology is concerned with sustainable relationships between humans, plants, animals, and the environment.
Permaculture promotes self sufficiency through the creation of systems that imitate nature.
Why should I go organic?
Conventional agriculture has been linked with many health problems including asthma, allergies. You must make healthy choices when buying food.
The Environmental Working Group (EWG), offers these tips to help you choose "cleaner" foods:
As much as possible, purchase organic fruits or vegetables
USDA organic labels for meat, poultry eggs, milk and cheese as well butter and honey are recommended.
Avoid processed foods labelled "natural"/ "no additives."
Carefully review ingredient lists. If an ingredient isn’t listed, it might be added during processing.
You should choose fresh meats rather than frozen or canned. Many frozen and canned foods contain less nutrients, like high fructose Corn Syrup.

How To
Organic foods: Are they healthier and more nutritious than conventional food?
Organic foods are grown without the use chemical pesticides or synthetic fertilisers. They are grown naturally without artificial inputs such pesticides and herbicides. Organic farming practices include crop rotation, cover crops, composting animal manure, recycling wastewater, and integrated pest management (IPM).
In 2002, USDA National Organic Program was established. It regulates the handling, processing, labelling and sale of organic products within the United States. NOP regulations make sure that organic agricultural product conforms to the Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act. The NOP regulations also require that organic products are free of prohibited substances such as pesticide residues and genetically modified organisms.
Two types of certification programs are available in the United States for producers who wish to have their products labeled organic. One is for farmers and ranchers; one is for manufacturers. Both programs require an annual audit of the operations in order to confirm compliance with stringent standards. There are several certifying organizations that offer these services. These include the CCOF Certified Organic Farmers & Ranchers as well as Quality Assurance International and the American Grassfed Association. These organizations offer third-party verification that farms adhere to strict guidelines about environmental stewardship and labour practices.
According to USDA’s Economic Research Service, organic farming accounted for $4.7Billion in 2013 sales. It was a 23 percent rise in retail spending for certified organic products since 2009. This period saw a 12 percent increase in grocery store sales. Spending on organic produce directly increased by 29.9%, while meat, poultry eggs, and seafood spending grew only by 1%.
Organic food is more expensive but the quality of organic food is worth it. Consumer Reports conducted a survey in 2015 and found that 88 percent of respondents would pay more for organic foods if they had higher nutritional value. Another study published in Health Affairs found that people who eat organic foods are less likely to suffer health problems like cancer, diabetes, obesity, asthma, heart disease, and depression.
There is no evidence to suggest eating organic foods can treat or prevent any diseases. However, some studies have suggested that they might be beneficial for your health as they may reduce your exposure of pesticides and contaminants. One example is the conclusion reached by a review of 31 studies, published in 2010, that organically reared beef was significantly less toxic than conventionally-raised beef. A separate analysis of 11 studies published in 2012 reached similar conclusions.
According to a 2014 report by the Environmental Working Group, the incidence of foodborne disease caused by E.coli, salmonella or listeria monocytogenes, E. coli and E. coli O157H7 was lower when organic chicken, non-organic pork, beef, lamb and milk were compared. After 2006, when USDA required stricter organic standards in animal raising for human consumption, the group noted that E.coli O157 was less common among children and adults.
