Frequently Asked Questions
Why should you buy organic?
Conventional agriculture has been linked to several health problems, including asthma, allergies, obesity, diabetes, cancer, birth defects, hormone imbalances, and other diseases. Make healthy food choices.
The Environmental Working Group has the following tips for choosing "cleaner" food.
Buy organic fruits and vegetables whenever possible.
USDA organic labels can be found on meat, poultry (eggs, eggs), milk, cheese and yogurt as well.
Avoid processed foods marked "natural" or with "no additives."
Always read the ingredient lists. If an ingredient isn’t listed, it might be added during processing.
It is better to eat fresh meats than canned or frozen. Frozen and canned foods often contain less nutrient-rich ingredients like high fructose corn syrup.
Are organic foods better for us?
According to the Environmental Working Group’s latest report on pesticide residues, organic fruits/vegetables had nearly half as many pesticides than non-organic. They discovered that organic apples contained eight more pesticides per gram than non-organic ones, while organic strawberries contained four times as many pesticides.
Research has also suggested that organic food may reduce mercury and lead exposure. For instance, one study showed that children who consumed organic meat had 33% less blood lead levels than children who did not. Another study concluded that pregnant mothers should avoid eating conventional fish because of the high levels mercury.
Organic food seems to be safer than the non-organic. Experts recommend eating fresh fruits and veggies whenever possible to reduce the chance of developing cancer.
Are there health benefits to eating organic food?
Although organic foods are not for everyone, they can be very healthy. They can be beneficial for your health if you eat them often.
Organic food is free from artificial fertilizers, pesticides and herbicides as well as hormones, antibiotics and genetic engineering. Organic produce is not grown with harmful chemicals that could pose a risk to human health.
Also, there are fewer additives that are used in processing. Organic products are likely to be healthier than nonorganic.
Studies have shown that organic foods are more nutritious and rich in antioxidants than fruits and veggies grown from conventional sources.
Organic farming methods are more expensive than conventional methods but they can often produce better results. Organic farming encourages soil fertility and biodiversity.
This helps to prevent erosion and conserve water resources. Organic farms also require less energy and fuel, as they aren't treated using toxic chemicals.
Some people worry that organic foods are more expensive than conventional ones. However, prices can vary depending upon where you live. For example, organic apples can be more costly than conventional apples.
But, if we look at the total cost of a combination of both types and fruits, we'll see organic is much cheaper.
Do you want to go organic?
It all depends upon who you are. You shouldn't bother if you don't enjoy organic food.
However, if you enjoy good-tasting food, you can buy organic food. Organic foods are safer than conventional food because they don't contain chemical pesticides or fertilizers.
Organic agriculture protects our environment by conserving natural resources and promoting biodiversity.
What should I look out for when buying organic products?
USDA-certified organic labels are desirable. This guarantees that the product meets certain USDA standards. Look out for the USDA Organic seal on boxes, cartons cans and jars.
When purchasing meat, ensure it is 100% organic. Cattle are ruminants. This means they chew the cud. Ruminant cattle are divided into four stomach compartments, the rumen and reticulum as well as the omasum and abmasum. If the cow is to be labeled "100% organic", all of its parts must have been organically fed.
You should only purchase chicken that has been raised organically. It must not have ever been treated with antibiotics. Chickens are omnivores, meaning they eat both plants and animals. Omnivorous chickens possess a digestive tract made up of a crop.
Buy only dairy products from cows that have been fed organically grown feed. Dairy cows have four stomach compartments, just like ruminants. Milk comes from the fourth stomach compartment--the udder.
You should always check the label before purchasing any other livestock. This will let you know what percentage of the diet was given to the animals. For example, pork may be marked "95% organic" to indicate that 95 percent of the pork's feed is organic.
How can I determine if my produce was organic?
These three labels can help you make sure you're buying organic produce.
USDA Organic Certified – This certification is issued by USDA to ensure that the product is 100% organic.
Certified Naturally Grown – Produce that meets strict organic standards but has not received USDA certification.
Pastured/Free-range - Made from animals that graze on grass and herbs outdoors.
These labels indicate that the product meets specific criteria, which include:
- No pesticides nor synthetic fertilizers
- There are no genetically modified organisms
- Animals are never given antibiotics
- Animals are not ever given hormones.
- No growth-promoting drugs
- No feed additives
- No artificial ingredients
- No irradiation
- No sewage sludge
- GMOs prohibited
- No antibiotics ever given
- No hormones ever given
- There are no growth-promoting drugs
- No feed-additives
- No artificial ingredients

How To
What happens when you switch from conventional products to organic?
Organic products are produced without the use of pesticides and synthetic fertilizers. They come from clean water sources and free-range animals. Organic products are those that do not contain chemicals or other additives. This product was made from natural materials and is free of harmful substances.
Natural refers to the way food was grown. This term is often used to refer to foods that are not processed into final forms (such as fruits). Natural foods are often fresher because they're not subject to heat radiation, chemical preservatives or any other treatment. Some people don't believe that natural means healthy. Experts say that there aren't many differences between organic and conventional food. Both types can be tested for safety and quality. Organic produce is safer than conventionally produced produce.
In general, most grocery stores now offer organic options. For organic meats, poultry, eggs and seafood, you should check with your local supermarket. Some companies sell only organic products; others have separate sections for them. USDA Certified Organic is a non-GMO Project Verified company.
If you are pregnant, or nursing, these products should not be eaten. Unborn babies and infants can be exposed to pesticides.
