Frequently Asked Questions

What should I be looking out for when shopping organic products

USDA-certified organic labels are desirable. This certifies that the product has met certain standards set by USDA. You will find the USDA Organic seal on all boxes, cartons and cans.

When purchasing meat, ensure it is 100% organic. Cattle are ruminants which means that they chew the cud. Ruminant cattle can be found with four stomach compartments: the rumen, the reticulum, omasum, abomasum and omasum. To be labeled '100% organic, all animal parts must be organically nourished.

When buying chicken, make sure it comes only from chickens fed 100% organic feed and never given antibiotics. Omnivore chickens eat both animals and plants. Omnivorous chickens possess a digestive tract made up of a crop.

When buying dairy products, ensure they come from cows fed 100% organically grown feed. Dairy cows have four stomach compartments, just like ruminants. The fourth stomach compartment--the cow's udder--is where milk is produced.

You should always check the label before purchasing any other livestock. This will let you know what percentage of the diet was given to the animals. For example, pork may be marked "95% organic" to indicate that 95 percent of the pork's feed is organic.

Why should I choose organic?

There have been many health problems linked to conventional farming, including allergies, asthma, diabetes, obesity, cancer, birth defects and hormone imbalances. It is important to make informed choices about food purchases.

The Environmental Working Group offers these tips:

Always buy organic fruits & vegetables.

USDA organic labels are required for meat, poultry, eggs and milk.

Avoid processed foods marked "natural" or with "no additives."

Make sure you read through all the ingredients. If an ingredient isn't listed, it may be added during processing.

Fresh meats are better than canned or frozen. Foods that are frozen or canned often have less nutritionally-rich ingredients, such as high fructosecorn syrup.

Why is organic foods important?

It is essential for our health to eat organic produce. It is the best way for us to eat healthy food. It's not only better for us but also it's more sustainable as it doesn't rely upon pesticides and fertilers.

Organic farming uses natural methods to grow crops without harmful chemicals. This results in fewer environmental pollutants and makes organic farming safer. So when you choose organic food, you're helping to protect yourself and the planet.

However, organic food is good for our health. We all know the negative effects that processed foods can have on our health. However, organic fruits & vegetables aren’t treated with chemical sprays. It means that organic fruits and vegetables taste better, last longer, and are brighter.

That's why eating organic matters so much. Organic is healthy for your health and for the environment.

What is organic?

Organic meat means real food, grown without artificial fertilizers or pesticides. Organic meat also indicates that animals were not fed genetically modified food. Because there are no harmful chemicals in the meat, it is safe for human consumption.

Organic meats are good for the environment. Organic foods reduce pollution in rivers, lakes and landfills. Organic farmers are less likely to use toxic chemicals to kill birds or insects. This helps protect wildlife.

You can eat organic meats and produce whenever you can. Local shopping helps keep more money in your community than it does out of state. Local businesses often pass savings on to customers who shop locally. Local businesses are more likely to keep jobs here than export them abroad.

What are the health benefits of organic foods?

Although organic foods are not for everyone, they can be very healthy. For those who consume them regularly, however, they can offer certain health benefits.

Organic food is grown without the use of pesticides herbicides fungicides hormones antibiotics or genetic engineering. Organic produce is produced without the use of harmful chemicals which could affect human health.

The use of additives in the processing process is also less common. You're more likely to eat organic products than you are non-organic.

Research shows that organic produce contains more nutrients and antioxidants compared to conventionally grown fruit and vegetables.

Even though organic farming methods can be more costly than conventional farming methods they are often more productive. Organic farming promotes soil fertility as well as biodiversity.

This helps protect against erosion and conserve water resources. Organic farms don't use toxic chemicals and require less fuel and energy.

People worry that organic foods will be more expensive than those made from conventional food. However, prices will vary depending on where one lives. Organic apples, on the other hand, tend to be more expensive that conventional apples.

However, organic fruit is more affordable if you compare the price of a basket of both types.

So should you go organic?

It depends on what kind of person you are. Organic food is not for you if you don’t like it.

However, if you enjoy good-tasting food, you can buy organic food. Organic food is safer than traditional commercial produce, as they are not subject to chemical pesticides, chemical fertilizers, or genetically modified organisms (GMOs).

Organic agriculture conserves the environment and promotes biodiversity.

How To

Organic food: Are they healthier and better for you?

Organic foods are grown without the use chemical pesticides or synthetic fertilisers. They are grown under natural conditions without artificial inputs such as fungicides, insecticides, herbicides, hormones, antibiotics, or genetic engineering. Organic farming practices include crop rotation, cover crops, composting animal manure, recycling wastewater, and integrated pest management (IPM).

The USDA National Organic Program (NOP) was established in 2002 to regulate the production, handling, processing, labelling, sale, and distribution of organic products sold in the United States. Organic agricultural products must be produced in accordance with federal standards as set out by the Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act. In addition, the NOP rules mandate that organic products must be free from prohibited substances, including pesticide residues, veterinary drugs, growth hormones, genetically modified organisms, irradiation, sewage sludge, industrial waste, and heavy metals.

For producers in the USA who want their products "organic", there are two kinds of certification programs: one for farmers or ranchers and one for manufacturers. Both programs require annual audits of operations to verify compliance with rigorous standards. Several certifying agents offer these services, including CCOF Certified Organic Farmers & Ranchers, Quality Assurance International, and the American Grassfed Association. Each of these organizations provides third-party verification to verify that farms are following strict guidelines in regards to environmental stewardship, labour practices and care for livestock.

According to USDA's Economic Research Service (ERS), organic agriculture accounted in 2013 for $4.7 Billion in sales. The retail spending on organic products accounted for nearly $1.5 billion in 2013, a 23 percent increase over 2009. Sales at grocery stores were up 12 percent during this period. Spending directly on organic produce grew by 29 percent while that on meat, poultry, eggs and seafood only grew by 1 percent.

Organic food is more expensive, but consumers believe its quality is worth the extra cost. Consumer Reports found that 88 per cent of respondents would be willing to pay more for organic food if the nutritional value was higher. A Health Affairs study also found that organic food consumers are less likely to develop health problems such as diabetes, cancer, obesity, heart disease, depression, and other diseases.

Even though there is no evidence organic foods cause or treat diseases, some studies show that they can improve overall health by reducing pesticide and other contaminants exposure. According to a 2010 review of 31 studies, organically raised beef showed significantly lower levels in toxic chemicals and parasites than conventionally produced beef. A separate analysis of 11 studies published in 2012 reached similar conclusions.

A 2014 report from the Environmental Working Group looked at data from the Department of Agriculture's Agricultural Marketing Resource Center and found that the incidence of foodborne illness caused by E. coli, salmonella, listeria monocytogenes, campylobacter, and verotoxin-producing E. coli O157:H7 decreased when comparing organic to non-organic chicken, pork, beef, lamb, milk, and cheese. The report also pointed out that E.coli 157 caused human illness declined in both children and adults following 2006 when USDA established stricter organic standards.
