What is the difference between organic and inorganic foods?
Organic food is produced without pesticides, chemical fertilizers, sewage sludge, irradiation, or genetic modification. Organic farming practices promote soil health, water quality and animal welfare.
Inorganic foods can be grown using pesticides, chemical fertilizers and sewage sludge. Radiation is used to treat irradiated food; biological engineering techniques are used to create genetically modified organisms (GMO).
Sometimes, the term "natural", is used interchangeably with "organic." Natural does not necessarily have to mean organic. You may also find products that are labeled as "natural", which could contain synthetic ingredients.
Because organic produce contains fewer harmful chemicals, pesticides, and fertilizers than conventional produce it is more nutritious. In addition, organic farmers do not use artificial fertilizers, hormones, antibiotics, or pesticides.
What are the top organic products?
Today, organic food is the fastest growing industry. We've come far from our roots but there is still room for improvement.
Organic products will be the future. They are safer and more cost-effective for consumers.
They also tend to have higher prices. That's why we created the Organic Food Index. We wanted to know which foods are popular today and whether trends are changing.
The results showed that organic food is increasing in popularity. Between 2011 & 2012, almost half of Americans purchased organic food.
The USDA reports that organic production increased 10% last year. Organic food now accounts for 9% of U.S. agricultural output.
Although organic food is gaining popularity, it appears that consumers still have to pay a premium for it. According to the Organic Trade Association (OTA), average retail prices for organic food are almost double those of conventional alternatives.
The organic food sector is growing faster than other segments of the food supply. If you examine the data closely, you will see that organic foods have grown steadily in consumption since 2009.
According to OTA the volume of organic products sold at supermarkets grew by 14% in 2010 and 2011.
This increase is due to consumers' demand for healthier foods. It is why organic food sales are growing across all ages.
Younger generations are also leading the way in organic food choices. Millennials have twice the likelihood of buying organic food as baby boomers. And young adults under 35 years old account for 25% of all organic food purchases.
Are organic foods healthier?
According to the Environmental Working Group’s latest report on pesticide residues, organic fruits/vegetables had nearly half as many pesticides than non-organic. Organic apples had eight times less pesticides than nonorganic apples. However, organic strawberries had four times the amount of pesticides as their conventional counterparts.
Research has also suggested that organic food may reduce mercury and lead exposure. One study revealed that children who ate organic meat had 33 per cent lower blood lead levels than their counterparts who didn't eat organic meats. Another study concluded that pregnant women should avoid consuming conventional fish due to high levels of mercury.
Organic food tends to be healthier than nonorganic. Experts recommend eating fresh fruits and veggies whenever possible to reduce the chance of developing cancer.
What should I look out for when buying organic products?
Look for USDA-certified organic labels. This certifies that the product has met certain standards set by USDA. On all packages, boxes and cartons, look for the USDA Organic seal.
When buying meat, make sure it is from organically fed cows. Cattle are ruminants. They eat the whole animal. Ruminant cattle have four stomach areas: rumen (reticulum), omasum (omasum), and abomasum. If the cow is to be labeled "100% organic", all of its parts must have been organically fed.
Buy chicken from only organic chickens that have been fed 100% organic food and are not given antibiotics. Omnivore chickens eat both animals and plants. Omnivorous chickens have a digestive system that includes a crop (proventriculus), gizzard and small intestine.
Buy dairy products that are 100% organically produced. Like ruminants and dairy cows, they have four stomach compartments. The fourth stomach compartment, the udder, is where milk comes from.
You should always check the label before purchasing any other livestock. This will let you know what percentage of the diet was given to the animals. For example, pork may be marked "95% organic" to indicate that 95 percent of the pork's feed is organic.
How do I find out if my produce's organic?
These three labels can help you make sure you're buying organic produce.
USDA Organic Certified – Produced by USDA and certified as 100% organic.
Certified Naturally Grown is produce that has met strict organic requirements but not yet been certified by the USDA.
Pastured/Free range - These are animals that live outside and graze freely on grasses and herbs.
These labels signify that the product meets a specific set of criteria.
- No pesticides nor synthetic fertilizers
- There are no genetically modified organisms
- Animals are never given antibiotics
- Animals never receive hormones
- No growth-promoting medications
- No feed additives
- No artificial ingredients
- No irradiation
- No sewage sludge
- GMOs banned
- No antibiotics ever given
- No hormones ever given
- No growth-promoting drugs
- No feed-additives
- No artificial ingredients
- No sewage waste (if it's non-GMO).
- No irradiation

What is organic?
Organic meat means real food, grown without artificial fertilizers or pesticides. Organic meat is also a guarantee that the animals weren’t fed any genetically altered feed. It is safe to eat because it doesn't contain any harmful chemicals.
Organic meats are better for the environment. Eating organic foods helps reduce pollution in the environment, such as rivers and lakes. Organic farmers generally don't use toxic chemicals that kill birds and insects. We help to protect wildlife.
Locally purchasing organic meats is the best way to make sure you are eating healthy and organic meats. Local purchases help keep more money within the community than traveling out of state. Local businesses often pass on savings to customers shopping locally. Shopping locally keeps American jobs in America, rather than sending them abroad.

How To
5 Reasons to buy organic products
Organic foods are free from pesticides and synthetic fertilisers. They contain no genetically modified organisms (GMOs) or irradiated ingredients. Their production methods do not involve sewage sludge or industrial solvents. During its growth, the food's natural environment remains unaffected by contamination. It is free from artificial additives and preservatives. There is no use of antibiotics or hormones. They are also grown in conditions that ensure they retain their nutritional value for longer periods of time.
- Health benefits. Organic produce contains fewer chemicals than nonorganic produce. This means that it is less likely to cause allergies. It also means that you consume less toxic chemicals and carcinogens.
- Eco-friendliness. Produce grown without synthetic fertilizer and pesticides requires very little water. Because it takes so much energy to grow conventionally, organic farms tend to be located far away from urban areas where there's plenty of pollution. This helps reduce pollution.
- Sustainability. Organic farming relies on soil fertility, rather than chemical fertilisers. This results in healthier soils and higher levels organic matter. It is better for soil health to rotate crops and allow the land to fallow regularly. Strong immune systems develop when farm animals are fed only grasses grown without antibiotics or added hormones.
- Taste. Due to being picked at peak quality, vegetables and fruits are often bland. Organic produce is more rich and sweetened because it was harvested when it was still unripe.
- Nutrition. GMOs are harmful chemicals found in many conventional processed foods. These harmful substances can be avoided by sticking to whole foods like meat, eggs, fish and nuts as well as seeds, beans, fruits, vegetables, and herbs.
