Is organic a guarantee that the product is pesticide-free

Organic food does not contain pesticides or chemicals and is therefore chemical-free. This means that organic food is often free of pesticides and fertilizers.

Because organic produce does not contain harmful additives it has more nutrients that conventionally produced foods.

The USDA National Organic Program (NOP), requires that farmers follow strict guidelines when growing organic crops.

These guidelines address soil preparation, crop rotations, pest control, water conservation, harvesting, and other practices.

In addition, organic farming methods promote healthy ecosystems, which benefit wildlife and natural habitats.


What should I look out for when buying organic products?

USDA-certified organic label are desirable. This certifies that the product has met certain standards set by USDA. On packages, boxes, cartons or cans, look out for the USDA Organic seal.

When buying meat, make sure it is from organically fed cows. Ruminants are cattle that chew their cud. Ruminant cattle have four stomach compartments: rumen, reticulum, omasum, and abomasum. Organic feeding must be done on all organs of the animal in order to get the cow labelled organic 100 percent.

Buy chicken from only organic chickens that have been fed 100% organic food and are not given antibiotics. Chickens can eat both animal and plant food. Omnivorous chickens have a digestive system that includes a crop (proventriculus), gizzard and small intestine.

When buying dairy products, ensure they come from cows fed 100% organically grown feed. Just like ruminants, dairy cows also have four stomachs. The fourth stomach compartment--the cow's udder--is where milk is produced.

To find out the percent of the feed the animals received when you purchase other types livestock, be sure to read the labels. A label for pork might say "95% organic", which means that 95% of the feed used by the pork came from organic sources.


Why should I choose organic?

Conventional agriculture has been linked to several health problems, including asthma, allergies, obesity, diabetes, cancer, birth defects, hormone imbalances, and other diseases. Healthy choices must be made when purchasing food.

The Environmental Working Group (EWG) offers the following tips on how to pick "cleaner" food:

As much as possible, purchase organic fruits or vegetables

Look for USDA organic labels on meat, poultry, eggs, milk, cheese, yogurt, butter, and honey.

Avoid processed foods labelled "natural"/ "no additives."

Check ingredient lists carefully. If an ingredient doesn't appear on the list, it could be added to the product during processing.

Choose fresh meats over frozen or canned ones. Frozen and canned foods often contain less nutrient-rich ingredients like high fructose corn syrup.


What is an organic food processor?

Organic food producers make products that are organically grown. These foods include fruits as well vegetables, grains and dairy products.

Organic food production takes place on farms where crops are nurtured naturally. This includes soil preparation, pest control, and crop rotation.

USDA (United States Department of Agriculture), has strict requirements for agricultural products to be certified organic.

These guidelines ensure that consumers can access safe, wholesome, nutritious food.

Organic food offers many health benefits. From lower levels of pesticide residues, heavy metal contamination, to higher nutrient contents and better flavour, organic foods are healthier.

USDA certified organic products must bear the USDA Certified Organic label.

This certification means the product has met the standards of the National Organic Program.

Organic food can help us eat better and protect our environment.

Organic farming techniques conserve water and land. Organic farming techniques also help to reduce greenhouse gas emissions which contributes to climate change.

Organic agriculture is more sustainable and uses less chemicals.

Because harmful gases such as ammonia or nitrates are less likely in the atmosphere, it also improves air quality.

There are many types of organic farming, including conventional, regenerative, agroecological, and permaculture.

Conventional farming uses synthetic inputs such pesticides and fertilizers.

Regenerative farming uses compost, cover crops, green manures, and other methods to improve the soil's health. It encourages biodiversity.

Agroecology promotes healthy relationships between humans and plants.

Permaculture promotes self sufficiency through the creation of systems that imitate nature.

What You Should Know About Organic Foods

Organic foods are made from animals and plants without pesticides or chemical fertilizers. They are not subject to genetic engineering or the use of ionizing radioactive radiation. Food must not contain artificial colours, flavour enhancers or preservatives. It should not include genetically modified organisms (GMOs).

The term "organic" was first used in 1845 when chemist Justus von Liebig coined the word "organisch" meaning life-giving, to describe the properties of manure. Nowadays, most people associate the term organic with the production of food. Organic simply means the product is made from only naturally occurring substances such proteins, carbohydrate, and minerals.

Over the past decade, organic products have seen a dramatic increase in consumption. Recent statistics indicate that approximately half of the world’s population eats at least one organic food per day. This percentage continues to rise and is projected to increase by 70%, 80%, or 90% by 2020.

Organic products are preferred for many reasons. Some like the taste, others prefer them because they believe organic produce is healthier, while some think organic farming is more environmentally friendly. However, there are also ethical concerns regarding the treatment of farm workers and animals, which is why some consumers opt for non-organic products.

Organic food tends to be more expensive that conventional foods, but prices can vary depending upon the country or region. There are many factors that influence the cost of organic foods. One is the availability and cost of land that can be used for organic agriculture. The cost of inputs and labor required for organic cultivation is another factor. The cost of transportation, marketing, and taxes are just a few other factors. The average price of organic food in Europe is 10% less than regular.
