Frequently Asked Questions

What are organic foods?

Organic produce is produced without synthetic fertilizers or pesticides. There are no growth hormones used and animal testing is not performed. These crops are allowed to grow naturally, so farmers do not use chemicals to prevent weeds or pests.

Organic farming methods also help to preserve soil quality, reduce erosion, and conserve water resources. Organics contain more nutrients than regular food and are therefore better for our overall health. Organic products are typically higher in fiber and lower in fat and calories than conventionally produced ones.

What is organic meat exactly?

Organic meat refers to real food grown without the use artificial fertilizers, pesticides, or hormones. Organic meat also indicates that animals were not fed genetically modified food. This means that the meat is safe for consumption as there aren’t any harmful chemicals.

Organic meats are also better for our environment. When we eat organic foods, we reduce the pollution in landfills, rivers, lakes, etc. We can also help wildlife by eating organic foods. Organic farmers do not often use toxic chemicals that can kill birds or insects.

The best way to ensure that you eat healthy organic meats is to buy them locally whenever possible. Local purchases help keep more money within the community than traveling out of state. Local businesses often pass savings on to customers who shop locally. Local businesses are more likely to keep jobs here than export them abroad.

What are my top priorities when buying organic products

USDA-certified organic labels should be sought. This guarantees that the product meets certain USDA standards. Look out for the USDA Organic seal on boxes, cartons cans and jars.

When purchasing meat, ensure it is 100% organic. Ruminants are cattle that chew their cud. Ruminant cattle have four stomach areas: rumen (reticulum), omasum (omasum), and abomasum. If the cow is to be labeled "100% organic", all of its parts must have been organically fed.

Make sure you only buy chicken from chicken farms that are fed organically and have never been given antibiotics. Chickens are omnivores. This means they can eat both plant and animal food. Omnivorous chickens possess a digestive tract made up of a crop.

Buy dairy products that are 100% organically produced. Just like ruminants have four stomachs, dairy cows have four. The fourth stomach compartment--the cow's udder--is where milk is produced.

When purchasing other types of livestock, check the label to see what percentage of the diet the animals were fed. A label for pork might say "95% organic", which means that 95% of the feed used by the pork came from organic sources.

Is organic the same as pesticide-free?

Organic food is naturally chemical-free and grows without pesticides. This means organic food is free from pesticides and fertilizers.

Because organic produce does not contain harmful additives it has more nutrients that conventionally produced foods.

The USDA National Organic Program requires that organic farming practices be followed by farmers.

These guidelines include soil preparation and crop rotation, pest management, water conservation, as well as harvesting practices.

Organic farming methods also benefit wildlife and natural environments.

How To

Five Reasons to Purchase Organic Products

Organic food is grown without synthetic fertilizers and pesticides. They do not contain genetically modified organisms (GMOs), or radioactive ingredients. Their production does not use sewage sludge and industrial solvents. During its growth, the food's natural environment remains unaffected by contamination. It is free from artificial additives and preservatives. There is no use hormones or anti-biotics. In addition, they are produced under conditions that allow them to retain their nutritional value and freshness for longer periods.

  1. Health benefits. Nonorganic produce is more chemically-laden than organic. It's therefore less likely that it will cause allergies and other sensitivities. It also means you're consuming fewer toxins and carcinogens.
  2. Eco-friendliness. Produce grown without pesticides or synthetic fertilizer needs very little water. Because conventional farming requires so much energy, organic farms are usually located far from places where pollution is high. This helps to reduce air pollution.
  3. Sustainability. Organic farming is based on soil fertility and not chemical fertilizers. This results in soils that are healthier and have higher levels of organic matter. Rotating crops and allowing the soil to rest between harvests improves soil health. Farm animals that eat only grasses, grains and no antibiotics develop strong immune systems.
  4. Taste. Because they are picked at their peak ripeness and then shipped long distances to supermarkets, conventional fruits and vegetables can often taste bland. Organic produce tastes richer and sweeter because it was harvested while still unripe.
  5. Nutrition. GMOs are harmful chemicals found in many conventional processed foods. Avoid these harmful chemicals by eating whole foods, such as meat, eggs and fish, seeds, legumes, fruits, vegetables, herbs, and beans.
