How To

Organic Foods: What You Need to Know

Organic foods come from plants and animals without chemical fertilizers, pesticides, or additives. They are made without genetic engineering and the application of ionizing radiance. No artificial colourings, flavour enhancers, preservatives, or colourings must be used in the food. It must not contain genetically modified organisms (GMOs).

The term "organic" was first used in 1845 when chemist Justus von Liebig coined the word "organisch" meaning life-giving, to describe the properties of manure. Nowadays, most people associate the term organic with the production of food. Organic simply means the product is made from only naturally occurring substances such proteins, carbohydrate, and minerals.

The global consumption of organic products has increased dramatically over the past decade. Recent statistics indicate that approximately half of the world’s population eats at least one organic food per day. This figure is on the rise and it is predicted to grow to 70%, 88%, and 90% in 2020.

There are many reasons why consumers choose organic products. Some consumers prefer organic products for the taste. Other people prefer them because organic produce is more nutritious. Still others believe organic farming is better for the environment. There are ethical concerns regarding farm workers and animals. This is why some people choose organic products.

Organic foods are usually more expensive than conventional ones, although prices vary depending on countries and regions. There are many factors that affect the cost of organic food. One factor is whether there are enough land available for organic farming. Another is the cost for inputs and labour required to grow organic crops. The cost of transportation, marketing, and taxes are just a few other factors. In Europe, for instance, the average price for organic food in Europe is 10% higher than its regular price.

Below are the main differences between conventional and organic foods.

  • Organic produce is completely free from chemicals, hormones and antibiotics.
  • Organic livestock is fed grasses & grains, not corn and soybean meal.
  • Organic milk comes from cows fed only grasses and hay.
  • All organic raw materials are certified organic.
  • Organic fruits or vegetables should not be grown in pesticide- or other harmful chemical environments.
  • Organic meat, poultry and seafood are not subject to radiation.
  • You should soak raw nuts and seeds before you use them.
  • Only healthy oils are used in organic cooking.
  • Organic eggs are laid by hens, and have access to the outdoors.
  • Organic honey is extracted by bees using traditional methods.
  • Organic chocolate uses sugar and beans that have been grown and processed organically.
  • Organic wines don't contain chemical additives.
