Organic products are the future. They are safer, better for our environment, and more affordable for consumers.

They are also generally more expensive. That's why we created the Organic Food Index. We wanted to determine which foods are the most popular among shoppers today and whether these trends are changing.

The results showed that organic food is increasing in popularity. The number of Americans shopping for organic food grew by nearly 50% between 2011 and 2012.

The USDA reports that organic production increased 10% last year. The U.S. now produces 9% of its agricultural output from organic food.

Organic food is growing in popularity but is still expensive. The Organic Trade Association (OTA) reports that organic food retail prices average almost double the price of conventional foods.

Organic food is growing faster that any other sector of the food industry. You can see that organic food has been steadily increasing since 2009.

According to OTA, organic products sold in supermarkets grew 14% between 2010-2011.

This is due to consumer demand for healthier food, which explains why organic foods sales are rising across all age groups.

However, younger generations are leading the charge when choosing organic food. Millennials are twice more likely to purchase organic food than baby boomers. 25 percent of organic food purchases are made by young adults younger than 35.

Why should I choose organic?

There have been many health problems linked to conventional farming, including allergies, asthma, diabetes, obesity, cancer, birth defects and hormone imbalances. You must make healthy choices when buying food.

The Environmental Working Group (EWG), offers these tips to help you choose "cleaner" foods:

When possible, buy organic fruits and veggies

USDA organic labels should be used on meat, poultry and eggs as well as milk, cheese, yogurt, butter, honey, and other dairy products.

Avoid processed foods marked "natural" or with "no additives."

Carefully review ingredient lists. If an ingredient doesn't appear on the list, it could be added to the product during processing.

You should choose fresh meats rather than frozen or canned. Many frozen and canned foods contain less nutrients, like high fructose Corn Syrup.

Is organic food healthy?

There are two types. Those we grow or those we get from someone else. There are exceptions to these categories, but most people will answer your question yes. Organic food is healthier as it doesn't contain any harmful chemicals or pesticides, herbicides and preservatives.

There are many supermarkets that sell organic food across North America and Europe. Most grocery stores now carry organic food, making it easier for consumers to choose organic products.

Organic food tastes better and is more nutritious, as it has higher levels of vitamins and minerals. Organics are often grown without pesticides and synthetic fertilizers. This means that they do not pollute the soil and water sources.

The USDA regulates organic agriculture practices. This means that farmers must adhere to strict guidelines to make sure organic produce is safe to consume. There are more than 30 million acres of US farmland that have been certified organic.

Organic food is often less expensive than conventional food. Customers pay less for the same amount in calories, protein and nutrients. Organic farms can charge lower prices for their crops since they aren't required to pay for expensive chemical inputs such as insecticides or fungicides.

According to the Environmental Working Group Organic food is actually 10 percent more expensive per pound than conventionally grown food. If you care about the health of yourself and your family, consider switching to organic food.

How To

Organic food: Are they healthier and better for you?

Organic foods are produced without the use of chemical pesticides and synthetic fertilizers. They are grown under natural conditions without artificial inputs such as fungicides, insecticides, herbicides, hormones, antibiotics, or genetic engineering. Organic farming practices include crop rotation, cover crops, composting animal manure, recycling wastewater, and integrated pest management (IPM).

In 2002, USDA National Organic Programs (NOP) were established to regulate the production and handling of organic products that are sold in the United States. The NOP regulations ensure that organic agricultural products are produced according to federal standards outlined in the Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act. The NOP regulations also require that organic products are free of prohibited substances such as pesticide residues and genetically modified organisms.

For producers in the USA who want their products "organic", there are two kinds of certification programs: one for farmers or ranchers and one for manufacturers. Both programs require an annual audit of the operations in order to confirm compliance with stringent standards. Several certifying agents offer these services, including CCOF Certified Organic Farmers & Ranchers, Quality Assurance International, and the American Grassfed Association. The three organizations all provide verification by third parties that farms have followed strict guidelines for environmental stewardship as well as labour practices and the care of livestock.

According to USDA's Economic Research Service (ERS), organic agriculture accounted in 2013 for $4.7 Billion in sales. In 2013, organic agriculture accounted for $4.7 billion in sales. This represents a 23-percent increase over 2009. Sales at grocery stores were up 12 percent during this period. Spending on organic produce was up 29 percent, but only 1 percent on meat, seafood, eggs, and dairy.

While organic food costs more, consumers say its quality justifies the added expense. Consumer Reports found that 88 per cent of respondents would be willing to pay more for organic food if the nutritional value was higher. A Health Affairs study also found that organic food consumers are less likely to develop health problems such as diabetes, cancer, obesity, heart disease, depression, and other diseases.

While there is no evidence that organic food can prevent or treat any diseases, there are some studies suggesting that eating them may improve your overall health by reducing your exposure to pesticides and other contaminants. For example, a review of 31 studies published in 2010 concluded that organically raised beef had significantly lower levels of toxic chemicals and parasites than conventionally raised beef. Similar conclusions were reached in a separate analysis of 11 other studies published in 2012.

The Environmental Working Group produced a 2014 report that compared organic and non-organic chickens, pork, beef and lamb. After 2006, when USDA required stricter organic standards in animal raising for human consumption, the group noted that E.coli O157 was less common among children and adults.
