What are my top priorities when buying organic products
USDA-certified organic labels should be sought. This seal signifies that the product meets specific USDA standards. On all packages, boxes and cartons, look for the USDA Organic seal.
When shopping for meat ensure it comes only from cows that are fed 100% organic feed. Cattle are ruminants. This means they chew the cud. Ruminant cattle can be found with four stomach compartments: the rumen, the reticulum, omasum, abomasum and omasum. If a cow is to be labeled organically, all parts must be organically fed.
Make sure you only buy chicken from chicken farms that are fed organically and have never been given antibiotics. Omnivore chickens can eat both plants as well as animals. Omnivorous chickens possess a digestive tract made up of a crop.
Buy only dairy products from cows that have been fed organically grown feed. Just like ruminants have four stomachs, dairy cows have four. The fourth stomach, or the udder is where you get milk.
To find out the percent of the feed the animals received when you purchase other types livestock, be sure to read the labels. For example, pork may be labelled '95% organic.' This means 95 percent of the pig's feed came from organic sources.

- Shop at wholesale clubs - Sams Club or Costco are great places to buy bulk foods such as chicken breasts and pork chops. If you are fortunate enough to live near one, you may be able get discounts up to 50 lbs on large quantities. You won't have to waste meat. And if you buy it in bulk, you can freeze it, so it lasts longer.
- You can shop online for meat at great prices. Amazon offers Prime Pantry, a weekly deal with free shipping on orders above $35. They offer discounts on beef roasts, ground beef, lamb steaks, and pork loins. It's easy to browse their website and see what's available at different times.
- Find a local farmer - Local farmers usually charge less than big box retailers because they do not pay considerable fees to stock their shelves. They also know what their animals ate and drink so they can tell exactly what is inside.
- Choose lean cuts of meat - It is usually cheaper to cook lean meat than fatty. Look for the tiniest cuts. The most popular are sirloin or flank steak, tenderloin roasts, top round steak, and top roast steak. These cuts are low in fat and high-protein.
