The term Thai spice is a common phrase that we've heard a lot, but don't really know what it means. But once we start to feel the heat in our mouths, we wonder why it hasn't been eaten more.

It's more than just a spice. It's an essential ingredient, which adds depth and flavor to dishes otherwise bland.

Many recipes call for Thai spice, but only a few have the actual thing. So let's help you figure out how to ensure you're adding these delicious flavors to your meals.

As far back as ancient times, Thais have been cooking with herbs and spices to add flavor to food and beverages. The name Thai originates from the Sanskrit word for "to cook."

Even today, most Thais prefer to eat spicy foods. This preference can often be attributed to Thailand's hot weather, which makes it hard to stay warm without hot beverages. Thais are also more likely to consume chili peppers as compared to Americans or Europeans.

A local Asian grocery store is the best place to learn more about Thai spice. There you will find a variety of ingredients such as dried chilies fresh basil leaves curry paste and ground black pepper.

You may also find whole peppercorns.

Thai cuisine can use either dry or wet spices. The dry spices are usually ground while the wet spices are crushed or pounded finely.

Dry spices can be added to any dish. A good example is chicken soup with ground red pepper. To make a paste, wet spices are often mixed with butter or oil.

Wet spices are usually used in marinades, sauces, and dressings. Fish sauce, oyster sauces, sesame and sesame olive oils, curry paste and hoisin are some of the most common wet spice options.

Do You Know How To Make Curry Paste?

Curry paste includes dried chillies (scallions, shallots), galangal root and lemongrass as well as kaffir lime leaves, garlic, shrimp pastes, sugar, salt and sometimes coconut milk. It is widely used in Thai cuisine.

Curry paste is a popular condiment in Southeast Asia. Curry paste adds a distinctive flavour to many dishes such as curries and soups, stir fries, stir-fries or rice dishes.

It's very simple to make this at home. Follow the steps below to make it easy!

Step1 - Prepare Ingredients

  • You need to prepare all ingredients before starting this recipe.
  • Start by peeling and chopping shallots (about 2 cups). Next, chop galangal root into small pieces (3 inches in length) and place aside.
  • Next, peel and slice garlic cloves (about four cloves). The lemongrass stems should be roughly 1/2 inch thick.
  • After that, you will need to crush dried red chili peppers (about four tablespoons) before removing the seeds (optional).
  • Next, slice the kaffir lime leaves in thin strips of about 5 inches. Set aside the white portion of the stem.
  • Next, drain and wash the shrimp paste (6 ounces), and then coarsely mashing it.
  • Last, take out the salt and sugar.

Step2 - Grind Ingredients

  • Combine all ingredients and blend until smooth.
  • The texture should look similar to peanut-butter.
  • Not to worry if the dish contains too much oil, you can use water to replace it.

Step3 - Add Coconut Milk

  • Add coconut milk to the mixture, and mix well.
  • Slowly add coconut water to prevent the paste from getting too sticky.
  • If you prefer less spice, add less chillies to the recipe and more galangalroot.
  • If you prefer it spicy, add more chillies or less galangal roots. The final result should taste delicious to you.

Step4 -- Serve

  • Top with your favorite food.
  • Enjoy!
