Frequently Asked Questions
Is organic produce healthy?
There are two types. One is those that we grow ourselves, and the other is those that we buy from someone else. Although there are exceptions to each category, most of the answers to your question are yes. Organic food is healthier since it doesn't include any harmful chemicals.
You can find organic foods in supermarkets across North America. Many grocery stores now stock organic food. This makes it easier to shop organic.
Organic food is better tasting and healthier because it contains more vitamins and minerals. In addition, organics are usually grown without applying synthetic fertilizers and pesticides, which means they do not pollute our soil and water supply.
Organic farming is regulated by the USDA. Farmers must follow strict guidelines to ensure safe eating. There are over 30,000,000 acres of US agricultural land that has been certified organic.
Organic food is often cheaper than traditional food. The same amount of nutrients, calories, and protein is being offered by organic food, but consumers are often paying less. Organic farms can charge less for their crop because they aren’t required to buy expensive chemical inputs.
According to the Environmental Working Group organic food is 10 percent cheaper per pound than conventionally manufactured food. If you care about the health of yourself and your family, consider switching to organic food.
Organic food is becoming a popular option to the standard American diet. Many people believe that organic food can only be found in specialty markets or gourmet restaurants. This is false. Organic food can easily be found in any regular grocery store across the United States.
Recent years have seen a significant increase in organic food sales. Organic food market value in the US increased from $21 billion to $43 billion in 2007 to reach $43 billion in 2012.
What is inorganic food?
Organic food is made without pesticides or artificial fertilizers. These chemicals can be harmful for your health.
Organic food is organically grown without the use of harmful chemicals such as pesticides or herbicides. These chemicals can harm humans and animals.
Inorganic food can include meat, fish eggs, buttermilk cheese, buttermilk, yogurt, honey grains, vegetables, fruits spices, and herbs.
Organic refers the way an agricultural product grows. For example, organic farming uses natural methods and soil amendments to grow crops, while conventional farming uses synthetic fertilizers and pesticides.
The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) must set strict guidelines for organic foods. All organic food must comply with the National Organic Program Standards. This means that it must not contain prohibited materials like antibiotics, growth hormones or genetically modified organisms (GMOs), as well as industrial solvents. Organic food must also be free from toxic chemicals, petroleum based fertilizers, sewage effluents and ionizing radiation.
Are organic foods healthier?
According to the Environmental Working Group, organic vegetables and fruits had half the amount of pesticides as non-organic. The Environmental Working Group found that organic apples contained eight-times less pesticides than other non-organic fruits, and organic strawberries had fourfold more than their conventional counterparts.
Another study suggests that organic food can reduce exposure to toxic metals such as lead and mercury. One study revealed that children who ate organic meat had 33 per cent lower blood lead levels than their counterparts who didn't eat organic meats. Another study concluded conventional fish consumption should be stopped by pregnant women because it contains high levels of mercury.
Overall, organic food does seem to be safer than its non-organic counterpart. Experts recommend fresh vegetables and fruits whenever possible in order to reduce the risk of getting cancer.
What are the most popular organic products?
The fastest-growing industry is organic food. But even though we've come a long way from our roots, there is still much room for growth.
Organic products are the future. They are safer, better for our environment, and more affordable for consumers.
But they tend to be more expensive. We created the Organic Food Index. We wanted the ability to identify which foods are currently most popular and whether these trends have changed.
These findings show that organic foods are becoming more popular. Between 2011-2012, nearly half of Americans shopped for organic foods.
According to USDA, organic food production increased by 10% only last year. Organic food now accounts for 9% of U.S. agricultural output.
Organic food is definitely on the rise, but it still seems expensive for consumers. The Organic Trade Association (OTA) reports that organic food retail prices average almost double the price of conventional foods.
However, organic food is growing more quickly than any other part of the food market. If you look closely at the data, it will be apparent that organic food consumption has steadily increased since 2009.
According to OTA however, the volume in supermarkets of organic products grew by 14% from 2010 to 2011.
This increase reflects consumer demand for healthier foods, which explains why organic food sales are increasing across all age groups.
However, younger generations are leading the charge when choosing organic food. Millennials have twice the likelihood of buying organic food as baby boomers. And young adults under 35 years old account for 25% of all organic food purchases.
How do I find out if my produce's organic?
These are the labels you should look for to ensure you are purchasing organic produce
USDA Organic Certified: Produces certified by USDA as 100% organic.
Certified Naturally Grown - Produce that has passed strict requirements for organic practices but has not yet received certification from the USDA.
Pastured/Free range - These are animals that live outside and graze freely on grasses and herbs.
These labels signify that the product meets a specific set of criteria.
- No synthetic fertilizers or pesticides
- No genetically modified organisms
- Animals are never given antibiotics
- The animal is never given any hormones
- No growth-promoting drugs
- No feed additives
- No artificial ingredients
- No irradiation
- There is no sewage sludge
- GMOs are not allowed
- There have never been any antibiotics given.
- No hormones ever given
- No growth-promoting drugs
- No feed-additives
- No artificial ingredients
- No sewage solids (if it's not GMO).
- No irradiation

What are the benefits to organic farming?
Organic farming offers farmers a method of growing food that doesn't require the use of chemicals. Organic farming is a way for farmers to produce food without using harmful pesticides.
Organic farming also offers more natural fertilizers. These fertilizers can be used to help grow healthier plants and to reduce the amount produced chemical waste.
Organic farming can also be environmentally friendly. Farmers often use composting techniques to recycle nutrients back into the soil. This reduces pollutants and conserves precious resources.
Organic farming also helps the environment by increasing crop yields. This is because there is much less water used during the growing season.
Organic production methods mean farmers can get higher prices. Consumers who are more aware about the dangers associated with pesticides, chemical fertilizers, and other chemicals will choose healthier foods.
This leads to a greater demand for organic food products. Organic farming is gaining popularity because of these reasons.

How To
What happens to your body if you switch to organic products
Organic products are free from synthetic fertilizers, pesticides, hormones, and genetic manipulation. They come from clean water sources, and are raised on free-range animals. The term "organic" means they do not contain any chemicals or additives. This product was made from natural materials and is free of harmful substances.
The term "natural", refers only to how food was grown. It's usually used to describe foods not processed into their final form (such as fruits). Natural foods are usually fresher than processed foods, as they haven’t been exposed to heat, radiation, chemical preservatives, or other treatments. However, some people believe natural doesn't necessarily mean healthy. Experts agree that organic and conventional foods are very similar. Both types have been tested for quality and safety. But organic produce has fewer pollutants and pesticide residues than conventionally grown produce.
Most grocery stores now sell organic products. Check with your local market if you want organic meat, poultry, dairy, eggs, and seafood. Some companies offer only organic products while others have separate sections. USDA Certified Organic and Non-GMO Project Verified are some of the options.
These items should be avoided if you're pregnant or breastfeeding. Unborn babies and infants can be affected by pesticides.
