Frequently Asked Questions

Organic meat is better

This question is probably answered if you've been paying close attention. This is the crux of it: organic food has been growing in popularity while conventional food has fallen out of favor.

Organic foods continue to be popular because they offer a healthier alternative. Organic foods are also safer for our overall health and reduce pollution.

There are many sides to this coin. Organic produce takes longer to grow, and it requires more resources. This means organic food will cost more than its non-organic counterpart.

Organic meats can be more expensive that those from conventionally raised animals. But, you can reduce the cost of organic meats without compromising quality.

Buy locally to save money. Locally grown produce helps to keep the prices down because farmers are given incentives to grow healthy crops.

Deals are another way to cut costs. When you purchase organics, there are often discounts.

You can also save money by eating less meat. Due to the cost of raising livestock, meat production can be expensive.

There are many reasons organic foods are better for our bodies and the environment, but we need to be mindful of the cost.

Why is organic food so important?

It is essential for our health to eat organic produce. It's the best method to ensure you eat healthy foods. It is healthier for us than any pesticides or fertilizers and it is also more eco-friendly.

Organic farming uses natural methods of cultivating crops that are free from harmful chemicals. This makes organic farming safer for both humans and animals. You are helping the planet and yourself by choosing organic food.

The health benefits of organic foods go well beyond our bodies. We are all well aware of how harmful processed food can make our bodies feel. Did you know that organic fruits and veggies aren't subject to chemical spray? They taste fresher, look better and last longer.

This is why organic food is so important. Organic is healthy for your health and for the environment.

What's the difference between organic foods and inorganic food?

Organic food is free from pesticides, chemical fertilizers and sewage sludge. It can also be grown without irradiation or genetic modification. Organic farming practices promote soil health, water quality and animal welfare.

Inorganic foods can be grown using pesticides, chemical fertilizers and sewage sludge. Radiated foods can be treated with radiation. Genetically modified organisms (GMOs) are created by biological engineering techniques.

"Organic" and "natural" are often interchangeable. However, natural does not necessarily mean organic. Some products labeled "natural" may also contain synthetic ingredients.

Because organic produce contains fewer harmful chemicals, pesticides, and fertilizers than conventional produce it is more nutritious. Organic farmers are free from artificial fertilizers and pesticides.

What is inorganic?

Organic food is produced without the use of artificial fertilizers and pesticides. These chemicals can cause health problems in organic foods.

Organic food can be grown without chemical fertilizers, pesticides herbicides, fungicides, and other harmful substances. These chemicals may cause damage to animals as well as humans.

Inorganic foods include meat, fish and eggs, dairy, butter, yogurts, honey, yogurt, honey, grains and vegetables, as well as spices, herbs, fruits, and spices.

The way that an agricultural product is grown organically is what the term means. Organic farming is based on natural methods, soil amendments, and crop growth. Conventional farming uses pesticides, fertilizers, and chemicals.

Foods labeled as organic must meet strict guidelines by the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA). The National Organic Program Standards state that organic food must be freed from banned substances like antibiotics, growthhormones, genetically altered organisms (GMOs) and industrial solvents. Organic food must also be free from toxic chemicals, petroleum based fertilizers, sewage effluents and ionizing radiation.

What are organic foods?

Organic produce is grown without pesticides, synthetic fertilizers, sewage sludge, irradiation, genetic engineering, or confinement feeding. There are no growth hormones used and animal testing is not performed. These crops can be grown naturally by farmers, and they don't need to be treated with chemicals to control pests or weeds.

Organic farming practices preserve soil quality and help conserve water resources. Organics contain more nutrients than regular food and are therefore better for our overall health. Organic foods are often higher in fiber, lower in fat, and less calories than those produced conventionally.

How To

Organic foods: Are they safer and more nutritious?

Organic food is produced without chemical pesticides or synthetic fertilizers. They are grown in natural environments without artificial inputs (fungicides/herbicides/hormones, antibiotics or genetic engineering). Organic farming practices include crop rotation and cover crops, the composting of animal manure, the recycling of wastewater, as well as integrated pest management (IPM).

The USDA National Organic Program (NOP) was established in 2002 to regulate the production, handling, processing, labelling, sale, and distribution of organic products sold in the United States. NOP regulations ensure organic agricultural products conform to the Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act. In addition, the NOP rules mandate that organic products must be free from prohibited substances, including pesticide residues, veterinary drugs, growth hormones, genetically modified organisms, irradiation, sewage sludge, industrial waste, and heavy metals.

There are two types available in the U.S. for producers who want their products to be labeled "organic". One for farmers and ranchers, and one for manufacturers. Each program requires an annual audit of operations to ensure compliance with strict standards. Many certifying agents offer this service, including CCOF Certified Organic Farmers & Ranchers (QA International), American Grassfed Association, and Quality Assurance International. Each of these organizations provides third-party verification to verify that farms are following strict guidelines in regards to environmental stewardship, labour practices and care for livestock.

The USDA's Economic Research Service estimates that organic agriculture was responsible for $4.7 billion of 2013 sales. The retail spending on organic products accounted for nearly $1.5 billion in 2013, a 23 percent increase over 2009. Groceries sales increased by 12 per cent during this time. Spending directly on organic produce grew by 29 percent while that on meat, poultry, eggs and seafood only grew by 1 percent.

Although organic food can be more expensive than regular food, many consumers feel that its quality is well worth the additional cost. Consumer Reports conducted a survey in 2015 and found that 88 percent of respondents would pay more for organic foods if they had higher nutritional value. Health Affairs also published a study showing that organic foods are less likely for people to get heart disease, diabetes, cancer, or obesity.

Even though there is no evidence organic foods cause or treat diseases, some studies show that they can improve overall health by reducing pesticide and other contaminants exposure. One example is the conclusion reached by a review of 31 studies, published in 2010, that organically reared beef was significantly less toxic than conventionally-raised beef. Similar results were also reached by a separate analysis of 11 2012 studies.

The Environmental Working Group's 2014 report examined data from the Department of Agriculture’s Agricultural Marketing Resource Center. It found that foodborne illnesses caused by E.coli, salmonella and listeria monocytogenes and verotoxin producing E.coli O157:H7 declined when organic and non-organic chickens, meat, lamb, dairy, and cheese were compared. The Environmental Working Group also found that E.coli O157 has been associated with fewer human illnesses in children and adults since 2006, when USDA began requiring stricter organic standards for animal production.
