Frequently Asked Questions

How do I find out if my produce's organic?

If you want to make sure that you are buying organic produce, look for these three labels:

USDA Organic Certified - Produce certified by the USDA as being 100% organic.

Certified Naturally-Grown - Produce which has passed strict organic practices requirements, but not yet received USDA certification.

Pastured/Free range - These are animals that live outside and graze freely on grasses and herbs.

These labels indicate that the product meets specific criteria, which include:

  • There are no synthetic pesticides or fertilizers
  • There are no genetically modified organisms
  • Animals are never given antibiotics
  • The animal is never given any hormones
  • No growth-promoting medications
  • No feed additives
  • No artificial ingredients
  • No irradiation
  • No sewage solids
  • No GMOs
  • Never gave antibiotics
  • No hormones ever given
  • There are no growth-promoting drugs
  • No feed-additives
  • No artificial ingredients
  • No sewage effluent (if it isn't a GMO).

Do organic foods have health benefits?

Organic foods may not be healthy for everyone. They can be beneficial for your health if you eat them often.

Organic food is free from artificial fertilizers, pesticides and herbicides as well as hormones, antibiotics and genetic engineering. Organic produce does not contain harmful chemicals that could be harmful to the human body.

Organic products also have fewer additives. Organic products are likely to be healthier than nonorganic.

Studies have shown that organic foods are more nutritious and rich in antioxidants than fruits and veggies grown from conventional sources.

Although organic farming methods tend to cost more than conventional farming methods, they often yield better results. Organic agriculture encourages soil fertility, biodiversity and biodiversity.

This helps preserve water resources and prevents erosion. Organic farms don't use toxic chemicals and require less fuel and energy.

Some people fear that organic foods can be more costly than conventional foods. Prices can vary depending on where you live. For example, organic apples tend to be more expensive than traditional apples.

But, if we look at the total cost of a combination of both types and fruits, we'll see organic is much cheaper.

So should you go organic?

It depends on what kind of person you are. You shouldn't bother if you don't enjoy organic food.

However, if you enjoy good-tasting food, you can buy organic food. Organic foods are safer than conventional food because they don't contain chemical pesticides or fertilizers.

Organic agriculture is a way to preserve the environment, conserve natural resources, and encourage biodiversity.

What are organic beauty products?

Organic Beauty Products are natural products that do not contain any synthetic chemicals, including parabens. Phenoxyethanol, phthalates and artificial preservatives. These ingredients can be found in many conventional beauty products such as cosmetics, shampoos and perfumes.

Organic beauty products do not require animal testing and are free of genetically modified organisms (GMO).

The USDA defines organic as "a system that fosters the cycling of resources." It has been used for many decades to describe food products grown without pesticides.

Due to the adverse effects of chemicals on our bodies, there has been a growing demand for eco-friendly cosmetics in recent years.

These include skin irritation, hormone imbalance, premature ageing, and cancer.

Organic beauty companies believe in creating safe and healthy products while protecting the planet.

What's the difference?

Organic food is free from pesticides, chemical fertilizers and sewage sludge. It can also be grown without irradiation or genetic modification. Organic farming practices support soil health, water quality, and animal welfare.

Inorganic food is grown with pesticides and chemical fertilizers. Radiation can be used to destroy food, while genetically modified organisms are created by biological engineering.

"Natural" is sometimes used interchangeably in the context of "organic." Natural does not always mean organic. You may also find products that are labeled as "natural", which could contain synthetic ingredients.

Organic produce is more nutritious than traditional produce due to the fact that it contains less harmful chemicals and pesticides. In addition, organic farmers do not use artificial fertilizers, hormones, antibiotics, or pesticides.

Is organic meat more nutritious?

You probably know the answer if you have been paying attention for a while. Here's the problem: Organic food is becoming more sought-after, while traditional food continues to decline in popularity.

Organic foods are more appealing because they are healthier. Organic foods are also safer for our overall health and reduce pollution.

But there are two sides to this coin. Organic produce takes longer to grow, and it requires more resources. Organic food is generally more expensive than nonorganic.

Organic meats are generally more expensive than conventionally raised animals. There are however ways to lower these costs without sacrificing the quality of organic meats.

Locally grown produce is a great way to save money. Locally grown produce helps to keep the prices down because farmers are given incentives to grow healthy crops.

Deals are another way to cut costs. You may be able to get discounts when you buy organics.

Consuming less meat is another way to save cash. Due to the cost of raising livestock, meat production can be expensive.

There are many reasons organic foods are better for our bodies and the environment, but we need to be mindful of the cost.

Which organic products are most in demand?

Today, organic foods are the fastest-growing industries. We've come far from our roots but there is still room for improvement.

Organic products are the future. Organic products are safer, more sustainable, and cheaper for consumers.

They are also generally more expensive. The Organic Food Index was created to address this. We wanted to see which foods are most in demand today and how these trends are changing.

The results showed that organic food is increasing in popularity. The number of Americans shopping for organic food grew by nearly 50% between 2011 and 2012.

According to USDA, organic production grew by 10% last year. 9% now comes from organic foods in the United States.

Although organic food is gaining popularity, it appears that consumers still have to pay a premium for it. According to the Organic Trade Association OTA, organic food retail prices are about twice those of conventional products.

That said, organic food is growing faster than any other segment of the food sector. You can see that organic food has been steadily increasing since 2009.

In fact, according to OTA, the volume of organic products sold in supermarkets grew by 14% between 2010 and 2011.

This is due to consumer demand for healthier food, which explains why organic foods sales are rising across all age groups.

The younger generation is however leading the charge for organic food. Millennials are twice likely to choose organic food than the baby boomers. 25 percent of organic food purchases are made by young adults younger than 35.

What is an inorganic food?

Organic food is made without pesticides or artificial fertilizers. These chemicals may be harmful to your health and can also be found in non-organic foods.

Organic food is free from harmful substances like pesticides and herbicides. These chemicals can be dangerous for both humans and animals.

Inorganic food is meat, fish, eggs and dairy products, including butter, yogurts honey, yogurts, butter, cream, cheese, butter, yogurts, honey and grains.

Organic refers to how an agricultural product was grown. Organic farming, for example, uses natural methods and soil amendments in order to grow crops. Conventional farming, however, uses pesticides and synthetic fertilizers.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) must set strict guidelines for organic foods. According to the National Organic Program Standards all organic food must be free of banned materials such as antibiotics growth hormones genetically modified organisms GMOs, and industrial solvents. Organic food must not be produced with toxic chemicals, petroleum or sewage sludges or ionizing radioactive substances.

Statistics

  • When packaged products indicate they are “made with organic [specific ingredient or food group],” they contain at least 70% organically produced ingredients. (usda.gov)
  • Brands participating in this challenge are committed to using 100 percent sustainable cotton by 2025.[5] (en.wikipedia.org)
  • Cosmetic brands such as Laurel and Rose Mira are 100 percent organic and have a wide array of skincare products. (en.wikipedia.org)
  • As for organic meat, regulations require that animals be raised in living conditions that accommodate their natural behaviours (like the ability to graze on pasture), fed 100% organic feed and forage, and not administered antibiotics or hormones. (usda.gov)

How To

Organic foods: Are organic foods healthier?

Organic foods are produced without the use of chemical pesticides and synthetic fertilizers. They are grown in natural environments without artificial inputs (fungicides/herbicides/hormones, antibiotics or genetic engineering). Crop rotation, cover crops and the use of compost animal manure, wastewater recycling, and integrated pest management (IPM) are some examples of organic farming.

The USDA National Organic Program (NOP) was established in 2002 to regulate the production, handling, processing, labelling, sale, and distribution of organic products sold in the United States. Organic agricultural products must be produced in accordance with federal standards as set out by the Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act. In addition, the NOP rules mandate that organic products must be free from prohibited substances, including pesticide residues, veterinary drugs, growth hormones, genetically modified organisms, irradiation, sewage sludge, industrial waste, and heavy metals.

For producers in the USA who want their products "organic", there are two kinds of certification programs: one for farmers or ranchers and one for manufacturers. Each program requires an annual audit of operations to ensure compliance with strict standards. These services are offered by several certifying agencies, including CCOF Certified Organic Farmers & Ranchers and Quality Assurance International. The three organizations all provide verification by third parties that farms have followed strict guidelines for environmental stewardship as well as labour practices and the care of livestock.

According to USDA's Economic Research Service (ERS), organic agriculture accounted in 2013 for $4.7 Billion in sales. The retail spending on organic products accounted for nearly $1.5 billion in 2013, a 23 percent increase over 2009. This period saw a 12 percent increase in grocery store sales. Spending on organic produce directly increased by 29.9%, while meat, poultry eggs, and seafood spending grew only by 1%.

Organic food is more expensive, but consumers believe its quality is worth the extra cost. Consumer Reports found that 88 per cent of respondents would be willing to pay more for organic food if the nutritional value was higher. Health Affairs also published a study showing that organic foods are less likely for people to get heart disease, diabetes, cancer, or obesity.

Although organic foods are not proven to prevent or treat certain diseases, some research suggests that they could improve overall health and reduce exposure to pesticides. For example, a review of 31 studies published in 2010 concluded that organically raised beef had significantly lower levels of toxic chemicals and parasites than conventionally raised beef. A separate analysis of 11 publications from 2012 produced similar results.

According to a 2014 report by the Environmental Working Group, the incidence of foodborne disease caused by E.coli, salmonella or listeria monocytogenes, E. coli and E. coli O157H7 was lower when organic chicken, non-organic pork, beef, lamb and milk were compared. The group also observed that E.coliO157 is a less prevalent cause of illness in humans among children than adults. This was because the USDA has imposed stricter organic standards on animals raised for human consumption.
