As well as ensuring that we eat healthier, organic food also helps protect our environment.

Organic farming techniques conserve water and land. In addition, organic methods reduce greenhouse gas emissions, which cause climate change.

Foods labeled as organic must meet strict guidelines by the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA). Organic food must also be free from toxic chemicals, petroleum based fertilizers, sewage effluents and ionizing radiation.


What are organic foods?

How To

Organic foods: Are they healthier and more nutritious than conventional food?

Organic foods can be grown without the use synthetic fertilizers and chemical pesticides. They are grown under natural conditions, without artificial inputs like pesticides, herbicides hormones, antibiotics, genetic engineering, and fungicides. Cover crops, crop rotation, crop rotation, composting animal manure as well as recycling wastewater are all organic farming practices.

In 2002, the USDA National Organic Program (NOP), was established to regulate the sale, purchase, labelling, production, and distribution of organic products in the United States. NOP regulations assure that organic agricultural products comply with the Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act. The NOP regulations also require that organic products are free of prohibited substances such as pesticide residues and genetically modified organisms.

There are two types available in the U.S. for producers who want their products to be labeled "organic". One for farmers and ranchers, and one for manufacturers. Both programs require an annual audit of the operations in order to confirm compliance with stringent standards. Many certifying agents offer this service, including CCOF Certified Organic Farmers & Ranchers (QA International), American Grassfed Association, and Quality Assurance International. Each of these organizations provides third-party verification to verify that farms are following strict guidelines in regards to environmental stewardship, labour practices and care for livestock.

According to USDA's Economic Research Service (ERS), organic agriculture accounted in 2013 for $4.7 Billion in sales. The retail spending on organic products accounted for nearly $1.5 billion in 2013, a 23 percent increase over 2009. During this time, grocery store sales increased by 12 percent. Spending on organic produce directly increased by 29.9%, while meat, poultry eggs, and seafood spending grew only by 1%.

Organic food is more expensive but the quality of organic food is worth it. Consumer Reports conducted a 2015 survey and found that 88% would pay more if organic food had better nutritional value. A Health Affairs study also found that organic food consumers are less likely to develop health problems such as diabetes, cancer, obesity, heart disease, depression, and other diseases.

There is no evidence to suggest eating organic foods can treat or prevent any diseases. However, some studies have suggested that they might be beneficial for your health as they may reduce your exposure of pesticides and contaminants. One example is the conclusion reached by a review of 31 studies, published in 2010, that organically reared beef was significantly less toxic than conventionally-raised beef. Similar conclusions were reached in a separate analysis of 11 other studies published in 2012.

The Environmental Working Group produced a 2014 report that compared organic and non-organic chickens, pork, beef and lamb. The group also observed that E.coliO157 is a less prevalent cause of illness in humans among children than adults. This was because the USDA has imposed stricter organic standards on animals raised for human consumption.
