The fastest-growing industry is organic food. Even though we have come a long ways from our roots there is still plenty of room for growth.

Organic products are the future. They are safer and more cost-effective for consumers.

But they also tend to be higher priced. We created the Organic Food Index. We wanted to see which foods are most in demand today and how these trends are changing.

The results showed that organic food is increasing in popularity. The number of Americans shopping for organic food grew by nearly 50% between 2011 and 2012.

The USDA reports that organic production increased 10% last year. Organic food now makes up 9% U.S. agriculture output.

Although organic food is gaining popularity, it appears that consumers still have to pay a premium for it. According to the Organic Trade Association OTA, organic food retail prices are about twice those of conventional products.

However, organic food is growing more quickly than any other part of the food market. You can see that organic food has been steadily increasing since 2009.

According to OTA's data, organic products sold in supermarkets grew at 14% between 2010 - 2011.

This increase reflects consumer demand for healthier foods, which explains why organic food sales are increasing across all age groups.

The younger generation is however leading the charge for organic food. Millennials are twice as likely than baby boomers to buy organic foods. The 25% of organic food purchase made by younger adults below 35 are made up of young adults.


What are organic fruits and vegetables?

Organic food does not contain pesticides or synthetic fertilizers. Organic foods also have more nutrients such as vitamins C, E and K plus omega-3 fatty acid. These healthy ingredients make organic food better for our bodies and the planet.

Organic foods are grown using sustainable farming practices that preserve soil quality and encourage biological diversity. They are made without the use of harmful chemicals, irradiation or sewage waste.

Organics are often associated with produce. However, organic products can include dairy, meat, poultry and eggs as well as personal care items and pet food.

The USDA defines "organic" as that crops being raised according to strict rules set forth by federal government standards. To grow these foods, farmers cannot use non-organic (or conventional) methods. They may however use approved natural pest management methods like crop rotation or cover cropping as well as organic feeds.

The farmer must also follow the guidelines for how much fertilizer and insecticide he uses throughout the growing season. He must also rotate his fields among different crops. GMOs, artificial growth hormones, synthetic pesticides and synthetic fertilizers are not allowed in the fields of farmers.

Vegetables and fruits labeled as "100% organic" fulfill all of the requirements. But, not all farms label their produce as 100% organic. It would confuse consumers. They will instead label their product "made with organic ingredients." "


Organic meat is better

This question is probably answered if you've been paying close attention. However, the truth is organic food is gaining popularity at a time when conventional food is falling out of favor.

Organic foods continue rising in popularity because they are healthier. Organic products are healthier for us and the environment.

However, this coin has two sides. Organic produce takes longer to grow and requires more resources to do so. This means that organic food costs more money than its non-organic counterpart.

Organic meats tend to be more expensive than those raised conventionally. But, you can reduce the cost of organic meats without compromising quality.

Buy locally to save money. Buying locally grown fruits and vegetables helps keep prices low because farmers receive incentives to grow healthy crops.

A great way to save money is to search for deals. Organics often come with discounts.

Finally, another way to save money is by eating less meat. Feeding livestock can be very expensive.

There are many reasons why organic food is better for our bodies and the planet, but we should be careful not to overlook the cost.

What you need to know about organic foods

Organic foods are those that come from plants or animals, and do not contain any chemical pesticides, fertilizers, or additives. They are made without genetic engineering and the application of ionizing radiance. Food must not contain artificial colours, flavour enhancers or preservatives. It must not contain genetically altered organisms (GMOs).

The term "organic" was first used in 1845 when chemist Justus von Liebig coined the word "organisch" meaning life-giving, to describe the properties of manure. Today, organic is synonymous with food production. Organic is a product that contains only naturally occurring substances, such a proteins, fats, or minerals.

Globally, organic product consumption has increased significantly over the last decade. According to recent statistics, around 50% of the world's population consumes at least one organic product daily. This percentage is increasing and will reach 70%, 80% and 90% by 2020.

Organic products are preferred for many reasons. Organic products are preferred by many people for their taste and health. Some also prefer organic produce because of the higher quality. Others believe that organic farming is more sustainable. Some consumers choose non-organic products because of ethical concerns about farm workers' and animal treatment.

Although organic foods tend to be more expensive than regular ones, prices can vary depending on where they are located. There are different factors influencing the price of organic food. One is the availability and cost of land that can be used for organic agriculture. Another factor is the price of inputs as well as labour for organic farming.
