Many people refer to organic agriculture as sustainable agriculture. Organic farming is more sustainable than traditional methods and provides all the nutrients necessary to sustain life.
Organic farming techniques include crop rotation and cover cropping. These techniques help prevent soil erosion and improve water quality.
They reduce the amount of chemical runoff that can enter waterways. Since most of us live in urban areas, we can find local farms that raise organic produce.
Two types of organic product certification programs exist. One is certified through the USDA National Organic Program and the other by independent certifying agents. Both require strict conformity to organic standards.
USDA seals or O Seals can be applied to organic products. This symbol indicates that the product meets federal requirements.
Are organic foods healthier?
According to the Environmental Working Group’s latest report on pesticide residues, organic fruits/vegetables had nearly half as many pesticides than non-organic. They discovered that organic apples contained eight more pesticides per gram than non-organic ones, while organic strawberries contained four times as many pesticides.
Another study suggests that organic food can reduce exposure to toxic metals such as lead and mercury. One study found that organic meats had 33 percent less lead in children than the levels of those who did not eat them. A second study found that conventional fish should be avoided by pregnant women due to the high levels of mercury.
Organic food is generally safer than non-organic. Experts recommend that fresh produce and vegetables be used whenever possible to reduce your chances of developing cancer.
What are the most popular organic products?
Today organic food is the fastest-growing sector. But even though we've come a long way from our roots, there is still much room for growth.
Organic products are the future. Organic products are safer, more sustainable, and cheaper for consumers.
But they also tend to be higher priced. The Organic Food Index was created to address this. We wanted to find out which foods are most popular with shoppers today, and whether these trends are changing.
The results showed that organic food is increasing in popularity. Between 2011 & 2012, almost half of Americans purchased organic food.
According to USDA, organic food production increased by 10% only last year. Currently, organic food accounts for 9% in the U.S. agricultural production.
While organic food is certainly gaining ground, it seems that it is still an expensive choice for consumers. According to the Organic Trade Association, (OTA), organic food retail prices are nearly twice as expensive than conventional options.
The organic food sector is growing faster than other segments of the food supply. If you examine the data closely, you will see that organic foods have grown steadily in consumption since 2009.
According to OTA however, the volume in supermarkets of organic products grew by 14% from 2010 to 2011.
This is because of consumer demand for healthier products, which explains the rise in organic food sales across all age categories.
However, younger generations are leading the charge when choosing organic food. Millennials are twice likely to choose organic food than the baby boomers. The 25% of organic food purchase made by younger adults below 35 are made up of young adults.

What you need to know about organic foods

The term "organic", as it is commonly known, was first used by Justus von Loig in 1845. He coined the phrase "organisch", which means life-giving, to describe manure's properties. Nowadays, most people associate the term organic with the production of food. Organic simply means the product is made from only naturally occurring substances such proteins, carbohydrate, and minerals.
In the past decades, the consumption of organic products has grown dramatically worldwide. According to statistics, approximately 50% of the world’s population consumes at minimum one organic product each day. This percentage is increasing and will reach 70%, 80% and 90% by 2020.
Organic products are preferred for many reasons. Some prefer the flavor, while others prefer them because they are healthier. Others also believe organic farming makes it more sustainable. Some consumers choose non-organic products because of ethical concerns about farm workers' and animal treatment.
Organic food tends to be more expensive that conventional foods, but prices can vary depending upon the country or region. There are different factors influencing the price of organic food. One factor is whether there are enough land available for organic farming. The cost of inputs and labor required for organic cultivation is another factor. There are other factors such as transportation costs, marketing and taxes. The average European price for organic food is 10% lower than the regular price.
