What Thai spice will I need to make Thai food home?
For authentic Thai cooking at home, you need to be familiar with five essential spices: cayenne, coriander, turmeric, cinnamon, and black pepper. Each ingredient plays a crucial role in the creation delicious dishes.
Cinnamon adds sweetness, while black pepper brings out savoury flavours. Curry powder gets its yellow hue from turmeric and coriander seeds. Cayenne peppers bring the heat while cilantro adds freshness. Cinnamon adds complexity and depth to any dish.
These spices are available at most grocery stores. However, if you prefer to order them online, we have recommendations.
What is the difference between curried curry and curried curry?
The spellings are the same. Both terms refer to the exact same thing: An Indian dish that combines meat and vegetables with different seasonings.
Curry is derived in Hindi from kari, which means to rub. This refers the way that the spice mix is applied onto the food. Curried foods are typically cooked until browned.
Curried dishes were once reserved for special occasions, but today, they're enjoyed frequently throughout India. These dishes can be chicken, beef (lamb), fish, or vegetables.
Plain white rice is commonly served with curried meals. You can also add raita (a yogurt sauce), or chutney (a sweet relish).
What's the difference in cooking with whole vs. ground spices? Ground Spices?
There are no differences between cooking with whole spices or ground spices. After harvesting, all spices are ground. There is no quality difference.
The price difference is however significant. Whole spices are more expensive due to the labour required for processing them. But the taste is worth it.
Buy whole spices and you'll often receive additional discounts. For example, you might receive a discount if you buy an entire bag of cinnamon sticks.
The same goes for nutmeg, cloves, ginger, cardamom, etc. If you purchase these spices in bulk, you may be able to save money.
Whole spices also last longer than ground spices. Ground spices lose their potency very quickly due to oxidation.
However, the main reason we recommend whole spices is because they add character to recipes.
Whole turmeric can be used to make delicious curry. You can also grind whole coriander leaves to make a spice mix for chicken dishes.
The process of grinding spices takes a lot of time. If you're buying whole spices it makes sense for you to buy large quantities. That way, you won't run out of spices too fast.
