Frequently Asked Questions
What are some things I should look out for when purchasing organic goods?
Look for USDA-certified organic labels. This seal signifies that the product meets specific USDA standards. Look out for the USDA Organic seal on boxes, cartons cans and jars.
When shopping for meat, ensure it comes from cows fed 100% organic feed. Ruminants are cattle that chew their cud. Ruminant cattle are divided into four stomach compartments, the rumen and reticulum as well as the omasum and abmasum. All parts of an animal must be organically fed if the cow is going to be labelled '100% organic.'
When buying chicken, make sure it comes only from chickens fed 100% organic feed and never given antibiotics. Omnivore chickens eat both animals and plants. A digestive tract that is omnivorous includes a crop, proventriculus and gizzard. It also contains small intestines, large intestines, and anus.
Buy dairy products that are 100% organically produced. Just like ruminants have four stomachs, dairy cows have four. The fourth stomach compartment, the udder, is where milk comes from.
Check the label when purchasing livestock of any other type to find out what percentage was used in the animal's diet. For example, pork may be marked "95% organic" to indicate that 95 percent of the pork's feed is organic.
What's the difference between organic foods and inorganic food?
Organic food is grown without the use of pesticides or chemical fertilizers, sewage effluent, radiation, or genetic modification. Organic farming practices are good for soil health, water quality, animal welfare, and the environment.
Inorganic foods can be grown using pesticides, chemical fertilizers and sewage sludge. Irradiated foods are treated with radiation; genetically modified organisms (GMO) are created through biological engineering techniques.
Sometimes, the term "natural", is used interchangeably with "organic." But natural does not necessarily imply organic. Natural products can also be labeled with synthetic ingredients.
Organic produce is often more nutritious than conventional produce, as the soil has fewer pesticides and harmful chemicals. Organic farmers also don't use synthetic fertilizers or hormones, pesticides, or antibiotics.
Is organic meat more nutritious?
If you've been paying attention for any time, you probably already know the answer to this question. But here's the rub, organic food is becoming more popular while conventional food continues to fall out of favour.
The reason why organic foods continue to rise in popularity is that they are healthier for us. Organic products are healthier for us and the environment.
But there are two sides to this coin. Organic produce is more difficult to grow and takes more resources. Organic food is generally more expensive than nonorganic.
Organic meats are generally more expensive than conventionally raised animals. There are however ways to lower these costs without sacrificing the quality of organic meats.
Buy locally to save money. Locally grown fruit and vegetables help lower the price of produce, as farmers are often given incentives to grow better crops.
You can also look for deals to reduce costs. Organics often come with discounts.
Consuming less meat is another way to save cash. Feeding livestock can be very expensive.
There are many reasons organic foods are better for our bodies and the environment, but we need to be mindful of the cost.
What are the most popular organic products?
Organic food is the fastest-growing industry today. But even though we've come a long way from our roots, there is still much room for growth.
Organic products will be the future. They are safer, better for our environment, and more affordable for consumers.
They are also generally more expensive. That is why we developed the Organic Food Index. We wanted to know which foods are popular today and whether trends are changing.
The results showed that organic food is increasing in popularity. Between 2011 and 2012, the number of Americans who shop for organic food increased by almost 50%.
The USDA reported that organic production rose by 10% in the last year. Currently, organic food accounts for 9% in the U.S. agricultural production.
Although organic food is gaining popularity, it appears that consumers still have to pay a premium for it. The average retail price for organic food is almost twice that of conventional foods, according to the Organic Trade Association (OTA).
The organic food sector is growing faster than other segments of the food supply. If you look closely at the data, it will be apparent that organic food consumption has steadily increased since 2009.
According to OTA the volume of organic products sold at supermarkets grew by 14% in 2010 and 2011.
This increase is due to consumers' demand for healthier foods. It is why organic food sales are growing across all ages.
Younger generations are choosing organic food more often than older generations. Millennials are twice as likely to buy organic food compared to baby boomers. And young adults under 35 years old account for 25% of all organic food purchases.

How To
Organic Foods: What You Need to Know
Organic foods are produced from plants and animals that have been grown without the use of pesticides, chemical fertilizers or other additives. They can be produced without the use of genetic engineering or ionizing radiation. Food must not contain artificial colours, flavour enhancers or preservatives. It should not contain genetically modified animals (GMOs).
The term "organic", as it is commonly known, was first used by Justus von Loig in 1845. He coined the phrase "organisch", which means life-giving, to describe manure's properties. Nowadays, most people associate the term organic with the production of food. Organic is a product that contains only naturally occurring substances, such a proteins, fats, or minerals.
The global consumption of organic products has increased dramatically over the past decade. Recent statistics show that around half of the world's population consumes at most one organic product per day. This number increases constantly and is expected to reach 70%, 80%, and 90% by 2020.
There are many factors that consumers choose organic produce. Some consumers prefer organic products for the taste. Other people prefer them because organic produce is more nutritious. Still others believe organic farming is better for the environment. Some consumers choose non-organic products because of ethical concerns about farm workers' and animal treatment.
Organic foods are usually more expensive than conventional ones, although prices vary depending on countries and regions. The price of organic food is affected by several factors. One factor is the availability of land suitable for organic agriculture. Another factor is the price of inputs as well as labour for organic farming. The cost of transportation, marketing, and taxes are just a few other factors. The average European price for organic food is 10% lower than the regular price.
The main differences between organic and conventional foods are summarized below.
- Organic produce does not contain any chemicals, hormones or antibiotics.
- Organic livestock is fed grasses and grains, rather than corn and soya meal.
- Organic milk is only produced from cows that are fed all-natural hay and pasture grasses.
- All raw materials used in organic manufacturing are certified organic.
- Organic fruits and veggies are grown and processed without pesticides and other harmful chemicals.
- No irradiation is used in organic meat, poultry, or seafood.
- Pre-soaking is recommended for raw nuts and seed.
- Organic cooking is only allowed to use healthy oils.
- Organic eggs are laid outdoors by hens.
- Honey is extracted using traditional methods by bees.
- Organic chocolate uses beans and sugar that have been organically farmed and processed.
- Organic wines don't contain chemical additives.
- The plants used to make organic tea are hand-picked.
- Organic cotton can't be treated with any pesticide or herbicide.
- Organic flours and cereals do not contain artificial colours or preservatives.
- Shampoos and soaps made from all natural ingredients are free of harsh chemicals.
- All-natural cosmetics can be used safely on your skin.
- All natural cleaning products can be biodegradable and are eco-friendly.
- All natural bodycare products are dermatologically tested for hypoallergenicity.
- All-natural products for personal hygiene are safe to use with babies as they don't contain any fragrances.
