Frequently Asked Questions
How to Store Spices
They should be kept out of direct sunlight and heat in an airtight container.
If you want to keep spices fresh for a long time, place them into a dark cupboard. This will keep the spices fresh and prevent any oxidation.
Your spices should be kept in cool and dry areas, away from direct sunlight. A heater or window can cause the spice to lose its aroma and flavour.
Spices are best stored in an airtight glass jar or tin. Avoid storing spices in plastic containers.
After opening the seal, make sure to inspect it again. Humidity can cause spoilage.
Don't throw out any spice leftovers. Instead, use them up by adding them to other dishes. To prolong their shelf life you can freeze them.
What are the uses of Thai spice?
Everyone has heard the term Thai spice, but not all know what it is. When we taste it, our mouths water and we wonder why we aren't eating more.
It's more than just a spice. It's an ingredient that can add flavor and depth in dishes that otherwise would be bland.
Many recipes call for Thai spice, but only a few have the actual thing. So let's help you figure out how to ensure you're adding these delicious flavors to your meals.
Thais have been cooking with herbs, spices and other flavors since ancient times. Thai, which means "to make", comes from the Sanskrit word.
Even today, most Thais prefer to eat spicy foods. This preference can often be attributed to Thailand's hot weather, which makes it hard to stay warm without hot beverages. Thais consume more chili peppers than Americans and Europeans.
The best way to learn about Thai spices is to visit a local Asian grocery store. There you will find a variety of ingredients such as dried chilies fresh basil leaves curry paste and ground black pepper.
You may also come across whole peppercorns, cloves, cinnamon sticks, star anise, cardamom pods, ginger root, turmeric powder, cumin seeds, coriander seeds, fennel seeds, nutmeg, mace, mustard seed, saffron threads, garlic, onion, rice vinegar and tamarind juice.
Thai cuisine offers two types of spices: dry and moist. The dry spices are usually ground while the wet spices are crushed or pounded finely.
Dry spices are added directly to a dish. Ground red pepper can be sprinkled on chicken soup, for example. In order to make a paste out of wet spices, oil or butter is often used.
Wet spices are usually used in marinades, sauces, and dressings. Wet spices are used in many dishes, including fish sauce, oyster, sesame, sesame, sesame oil and curry paste.
If you want to try making Thai dishes at home, you need to know which spices go well with certain ingredients.
For example, red pepper flakes is recommended for beef. Use white pepper if you are using seafood like shrimp.
Online ordering is also possible if you don’t have an Asian market. There are many options for exotic herbs, spices and dried chilies.
You might want to try these Thai recipes next time you feel hungry.
What's the difference in cooking with whole vs. ground spices? Ground Spices?
There is no difference between cooking whole spices and with ground spices. All spices are ground after harvesting. This ensures that there are no differences in the quality of spices.
The price difference is however significant. Whole spices are more expensive because of the labor required to process them. But the flavour is worth it.
Buy whole spices and you'll often receive additional discounts. If you buy a whole bag of cinnamon sticks, you may get a discount.
The same applies to nutmeg and cloves, ginger or cardamom. These spices can be purchased in bulk to save money.
Whole spices can also last longer than the ground spices. Ground spices lose their potency rapidly due to oxygenation.
However, the main reason we recommend whole spices is because they add character to recipes.
You can make a delicious curry by using whole turmeric in place of ground turmeric. For chicken dishes, whole coriander seeds can be ground to make a spice blend.
Additionally, spices need to be ground. When you buy whole spices, it makes sense to buy a large quantity. That way, you won't run out of spices too fast.
What are 7 Indian spices?
Indian spices refers to a variety of spices that are used in Indian cooking. They include coriander and turmeric as well as cardamom, cumin and coriander. These spices add flavour and aroma to dishes by blending and complementing natural ingredients such as meats and vegetables. The unique flavour profiles created by spices are what make Indian cooking special.
Cardamom has a pungent, sweet taste with hints o citrus and ginger. It is used often to flavor curries and rice dishes such as biryani. Cumin has a earthy aroma and a rich, bitter flavour. It is used to spice up curries, dals and meat dishes. Coriander adds a delicate nuttiness and sweet citrus aroma to dishes. It is used to season lentils and vegetables.
Turmeric has an earthy flavour with mustard, spices, and pepper hints. This spice is popularly used in curries as well as other dishes. Fenugreek possesses a rich, earthy scent, slightly bitter flavour, and earthy tone tones. It is often used in seasoning meat dishes like kebabs, curries, and kebabs. It is spicy and pungent with citrus hints. It adds a spicy kick to dishes like soups and chutneys. Asafoetida is a spice that has strong flavors and a pungent smell.
Together, these spices create unique flavors that make Indian cooking so distinct.
What spices or herbs go best with potatoes?
A potato can be a side dish for any type of meat. You might have been cooking potatoes for a while and know that there are other ways to prepare them.
These versatile vegetables can be used in a variety of dishes including soups, casseroles, and pasta dishes. But did you know that numerous spices and herbs go well with potatoes?
These recipes will help you spice up your next potato dish.
Can you add spice to a beverage?
It's amazing how spices can add flavour and flavor to food. How can you make spices come to life when they are used in drinks?
Spices are great because they bring out the best in any beverage. Add a pinch of cinnamon or nutmeg to your favorite beverage, such as coffee, tea, or hot chocolate.
Most recipes require ground spices. You will need to use fresh whole spices. This makes sense, but it is expensive, takes time, and requires storage space.
This is where magic happens. It's possible to transform your favorite spices into a powdered form that is easy to use with a bit of creativity. To make tasty spiced drinks, you can combine them with your favourite beverages.
There are two ways to go about creating these powders. The first involves the grinding of whole spices to make fine powder. Another way is to grind the spices in a mortar and pestle.
You'll find it easier to make powder than whole spices, regardless of the method. Powder also keeps well so you won't run dry.
You can experiment with mixing spices to create different flavours. Peppermint and spearmint can be combined to make minty water. You can also make spicy ginger-ginger tea by combining ginger and cardamom seeds.
Once you are skilled in the production of powdered spices, it is possible to apply that technique to herbs. Some of the most common herbs are basil, rosemary, thyme, oregano and sage.
The possibilities are limitless. You can use powdered spice to enhance the flavour of your drinks or dishes like soups, salads, or pasta.

How To
How do you make a garlic press?
A garlic press is a valuable tool in every home cook's kitchen. It allows you to efficiently mince garlic into a paste or puree it into a smooth sauce, soup, or salad dressing. It is great for crushing whole garlic cloves in a buttery spread, or garlic salt.
But if you don't own a garlic press yet, you might wonder where to start with one. We have some tips to help get you started.
First things first: you'll need a large bowl. Place the bowl underneath the press and pour the crushed garlic into it. Now, turn the pressure regulator to maximum.
Next, turn your handle clockwise to hear a click. You will be able to slide the blade over the bowl by lifting the top part of your press. Continue turning the handle counterclockwise to close the blades.
Finally, take the pressed garlic out and enjoy!
Here are some more ways to use this versatile instrument:
- Make minced garlic soups, sauces for salads, dips and seasonings.
- You can crush whole garlic cloves using the press to make a buttery spread
- Crush whole cloves of garlic onto pizza dough before baking
- Make roasted garlic mashed potatoes, or creamy polenta.
- Use the press to make homemade pesto out of garlic
- Puree garlic into a smooth vinaigrette
