Galangal provides a subtle peppery flavour to dishes. Kaffir lime leaves add a zesty, citrusy fragrance to dishes. Chillies give dishes a spicy kick. Shrimp paste enhances the umami flavor of dishes. What's the difference between cooking whole and with ground spices? Ground Spices?

There are no significant differences in the cooking of whole and ground spices. After harvesting, all spices are ground. This ensures that there are no differences in the quality of spices.

However, the price difference is substantial. Whole spices are more expensive due to the labour required for processing them. But the flavour is worth it.

Bulk purchases of whole spices can often get you additional discounts. For example, you might receive a discount if you buy an entire bag of cinnamon sticks.

The same goes for nutmeg, cloves, ginger, cardamom, etc. If you purchase these spices in bulk, you may be able to save money.

Whole spices also last longer than ground spices. Ground spices lose their potency very quickly due to oxidation.

However, the main reason we recommend whole spices is because they add character to recipes.

Whole turmeric can be used to make delicious curry. For chicken dishes, whole coriander seeds can be ground to make a spice blend.

Grinding spices takes time. A large amount of whole spices is a good idea. So you don't run short of spices.


Does Thai use ginger?

The answer is yes. Traditional Thai cuisine uses ginger extensively. Ginger is often used to make stir-fries and soups. It is also used in desserts, drinks, such a lassis.

Ginger is an indigenous plant of China, Japan and Korea. Its roots date back more that 5,000 years. It is believed it originated in Southeast Asia. There, it was used for medicinal purposes.

Ginger has been shown to reduce nausea and stimulate digestion. It may even help prevent migraines. Ginger is also known to reduce muscle spasms and joint pains as well as treating arthritis.

Ginger is most commonly used fresh in Thailand. It is then cut into thin strips and dried. Asian markets sell ginger root in cans and cans.


How to Store Spices

Keep them out of the sun and heat.

For longer storage, store spices in a dark cabinet. This will preserve them and prevent any oxidation.

Store your spices in a cool, dry area away from direct sunlight. You can lose the aroma and flavor of your spice if it is near a heater or window.

Spices are best stored in an airtight glass jar or tin. You should ensure that the containers are not moistened if you store them in plastic containers.

It is vital to always check the seal after opening, resealing and before storing.

Although there are many recipes that call for Thai spices in large numbers, very few recipes actually use the true thing. Let's discuss how to incorporate these tasty flavors into your meals.

Thais have been using herbs and spices in their cooking since antiquity to add flavor to food. Thai derives its name from the Sanskrit phrase "to cook".

Most Thais like spicy food, even today. This preference can often be attributed to Thailand's hot weather, which makes it hard to stay warm without hot beverages. Thais also consume more chili peppers that Americans or Europeans.

It is a great way to learn more about Thai spices. There you will find a variety of ingredients such as dried chilies fresh basil leaves curry paste and ground black pepper.

You might also find whole peppercorns and cloves as well as cinnamon sticks, star anise pods (star anise), cardamom pods ginger root, cumin seeds coriander seeds seeds, fennel seed, nutmeg mace, mustard seeds, saffron threads garlic, onion, rice vinegar, and tamarind juice.

Thai cuisine can use either dry or wet spices. Wet spices are ground finely, while dry spices are typically ground.

Dry spices are often added to a dish directly. For example, you can sprinkle ground red pepper onto your chicken soup. To make a paste, wet spices are often mixed with butter or oil.

Are You able to make curry paste?

Curry paste includes dried chillies (scallions, shallots), galangal root and lemongrass as well as kaffir lime leaves, garlic, shrimp pastes, sugar, salt and sometimes coconut milk. It's used extensively in Thai cuisine.

Curry paste is a popular condiment in Southeast Asia. It gives many dishes a unique taste, including curries, soups stir-fries, stir-fries and salads.

It is very easy to make it at home. Just follow our step-by-step guide below:

Step1 - Prepare Ingredients

  • Before you start this recipe, make sure that all ingredients are prepared.
  • Start by peeling and chopping shallots (about 2 cups). Cut galangal root in small pieces, about 3 inches long. Set aside.
  • Next, you will need to peel and slice the garlic cloves (about 4 cloves). Lemongrass stems about 1/2 inch thick should be removed and finely chopped.
  • You can then crush the red chilli bell peppers into small pieces (about 4 tablespoons), and then you can remove the seeds (optional).
  • Next, slice the kaffir lime leaves in thin strips of about 5 inches. Remove the white part of the stem and set it aside.
  • After that, wash and drain shrimp paste (about 6 ounces), then coarsely mash it.
  • Finally, measure the sugar and salt.

Step2 - Grind Ingredients

  • Blend all ingredients until smooth
  • The texture should be very similar to peanut butter.
  • Take note: If you are looking to reduce oil in your dish you can add water to the mix.

Step3 - Add Coconut Milk

  • Mix the coconut milk into the mixture.
  • Slowly add coconut milk to ensure that the paste doesn't become too sticky.
  • If you prefer less spice, add less chillies to the recipe and more galangalroot.
  • You may prefer it hotter, so add more chilies or less galangalroot. The final product should be tasty to you.

Step4 - Serve

  • Serve on top of your favourite foods.
  • Enjoy!
